The Rotominder Service Above Self / Light Up Rotary Rotary Club of Chatham www.chathamrotary.com St. Clair College Capitol Theatre, Rotary Lounge rotaryc@ciaccess.com 238 King St W. Phone 519-354-8300 Wednesdays at 12:15 P.M. Fax 519-354-5535 ORIGINAL CHARTER # 1011 issued - November 1 st, 1921 Keith Dawson December 3, 2014 This week, our speakers were Joyce Martin-Bruce, Chris Crawford, Heather Loucks and Liz DiCrescenzo, all members of the CK Quilt Guild. They were introduced by Rotarian Kelley Doyle. We have all noticed the large barn quilts as we travel along old Hwy. #2 (Longwoods Road) from Thamesville to Delaware. These quilts, 90 in number, were placed to tell us about the history of the people who lived in this area from 1750 to 1850. The CK Quilt Guild have accepted the challenge of placing another 30 quilts across Chatham Kent, from the Lighthouse to Thamesville. The guild started in 1998 with 130 members. The barn quilts are designed to tell a story, create a themed route and attract visitors. Each barn quilt is an 8'x8' wooden square, painted and placed on barns or other buildings along the route. The designs for the quilts are researched and are intended to depict the history of CK. Decisions on the colours and patterns for each of the 30 quilts involved artists, writers and community organizations. A sample quilt with all 30 designs was made recently and was on display at our meeting today. The group is hoping to find locations and mount the 30 signs by the end of next year. Most of the designs tell a story about some of the early settlers like James Steinhoff or the Arnold family. Others depict buildings like the Lighth ouse or the McCrae House. The cost of each finished barn quilt is estimated to be $1,000. This project is a wonderful addition to the history and heritage of our local community and we thank the Quilt Guild for their dedication and hard work. Our thanks were expressed by Rotarian Alysson Storey.
