Some of you love each other. I just want you to know that I really, really like all of you, and absolutely love being your chapter director. Some of you don t know since Steve and I sold our Gold Wing a little over a year ago it took special dispensation from the powers above (in GWRRA, not God) to allow me to be your chapter director (CD s are supposed to own a Gold Wing). Just wanted you to know that s how much I enjoy spending time with you folks! Speaking of spending time Several chapter members went up to Wilmington DE for the Ice Cream Festival there on June 28. They said it was a great time, so we will put it on the calendar for next year. Our Ice Cream social in July was at the Dairy Queen in Rosedale. Steve and I spent some time with the members that live down that way, Sue, Wendy, Kevin & Carol Paul and one of their boys (I swear I will get the names right one day!) Target Night Out our opportunity to show off the bikes and tell folks about Motorist Awareness, has been changed to Tuesday, Aug 5, and is at the Target in Bel Air. Our space will be to the right of the building as you face the entrance. I ll be there at 4:30 to set things up and could use some help filling balloons! If you replied to Rick that you will be there, we ll have pizza and drinks for you. We ll have our tent and banner up and some pamphlets to pass out. Rick has also picked up some candy for the kids that often presents an opportunity to talk to the parents. I understand we have about 7 bikes coming and Rick will have spaces marked off for you. Judy and Shane have listed all the August events in their article below. Please note your calendars. Greetings from our Rider Educator Rodney Malone Well July has come and gone and what a busy month is was. I m happy I was able to participate on two very nice rides associated with chapter visits this past month. First I jointed our couple of the year (Chris and Marge) and assistant chapter directors (Shane and Judy) on a ride up north where we visited PA s Chapter V. It was a wonderful time with the very nice folks of PA-V and to add to the enjoyment, I was able to take home the big prize from their 50/50 drawing ($35). Later in the month I also joined Chris and Marge on ride to Hagerstown where we visited MD Chapter F and of course we enjoyed spending time with the hospitable folks of MD-F. During the month of July we also had our youngest son Marc visit us. He is a soldier stationed at Fort Bragg and was taking a couple weeks vacation before deploying for a second time to Afghanistan. Ruth and I were certainly happy to have him home and to be able to spend time with him although it will be sad to see him off knowing where he is headed next. During the Chapter Gathering on 27 July, I simply spoke about the importance of wearing the proper gear when riding and also reminded everyone that we are responsible for ourselves when it comes to clearing an intersection, stopping and looking both ways Sometimes we are trying to be helpful and announce on the CB that it s all clear for the follower to come on out of the turn. This can be risky and it is very important for each of us to look and ensure traffic is clear for ourselves. It was good to have Mr. Al General (District Educator) in attendance at our chapter gathering on 27 July. He took a moment to discuss the importance of inspecting the one s motorcycle regularly, citing examples of critically worn tires identified at a rally he attended. Riders were taking advantage of the vendors who were selling tires and mounting them at the rally and he noted that some of the tires that were being replaced were dangerously low on tread. Finally, we also discussed during the gathering the upcoming Parking Lot Practice to be conducted on 24 August, immediately after our August Gathering. I need to know who will participate so we can have certification cards for you. Location will be announced by separate email message to the chapter members and Mr. Al General will be the Facilitator for the PLP. Ride Prepared, Be Safe, and Have Fun RODNEY
Greetings from the ACD This summer seems to be passing by in a whirlwind! We ve had my family members that live in PA (my brother, his wife, and my sister) come stay with us for a couple weekends in June and again in July. So unfortunately we missed both June and July s chapter meetings. But even though we weren t able to make all the chapter events in July, we did make the ride to visit PA-V in Hanover, PA on Sunday, the 13 th of July. There were a total of five riders with Chris Nagel leading the ride: Marge Nagel, Rodney Malone, Shane, and me. We all enjoyed the ride through the back roads of Maryland and Pennsylvania and the visit with PA-V members. It was good to see old friends and new friends at PA-V. We got to visit with former MD-H chapter members, Dave and Debbie Sorrick, and caught up on their news, as well as with fellow PA-V members. The food and service was good at the Cross Keys Motor Inn restaurant too. We couldn t have asked for better riding weather, it was cool on the way to the chapter meeting and nicely warm on the way home. This August will be another busy month with various bike events coming up such as Target Night Out (5 Aug), Herr s Bike Night (7 Aug), ice cream meet at Wilson s in Forest Hill (13 Aug), Hartman s Pot Luck (16 Aug), visit to MD-J (Aug 17), Shane s ride to the PA BBQ Cook Off (23 Aug), and last but not least, our Chapter meeting and PLP (24 Aug). Don t forget to add these events to your calendars. Hope to see you at some of the August chapter activities! Ride safe and keep the shiny side up!
