Scene 1: The Ladybug Stepsisters (Spiderella is at home, sweeping the floor.) Spiderella lived with her two ladybug stepsisters. They liked making fun of Spiderella and they always made her do all the housework. (Enter First and Second Ladybugs) We re both beautiful ladybugs. We have pretty spots 1 and fine wings. We have six legs. You have eight legs. Yeah, you re strange 2, Spiderella. You have two extra 3 legs. They re good for doing housework. Hop to it 4, Spiderella! Put those extra legs to work. Sweep the floor! (Sadly) Yes, sister. Clean the kitchen! Yes, sister. Wash the clothes! (Throw dirty clothes at Spiderella.) 1 marks, dots 2 odd, different, not normal 3 more 4 get going, move faster

(Ladybugs exit) (Crying) Okay. What should I do first? Shut up! We re ladybugs. We re too sweet and pretty to do housework. Besides, we might hurt one of our beautiful wings. Spiderella went about her work sadly.

Scene 2: Bug Party Invitation Spiderella s two mean ladybug stepsisters sat around the house chatting. They were both very excited. There was going to be a big bug party held by the Cicada 5 Prince. I m so excited! I want to look beautiful so that the Cicada Prince will fall in love with me. I m going to wear a lovely gown 6 and the Cicada Prince will ask me to marry him. (Holds gown up to see in the mirror. Spins and looks happy.) (Exit ladybugs) I d like to go to the bug party, too. What?! That s the craziest 7 thing I ve ever heard. You have too many legs. How would you even dance? The only thing you re good for is cleaning and making webs 8. Now, go make us gowns for the party! 5 a large insect with see-through wings. make a very loud noise by rubbing their legs together. 6 a long, fancy dress worn for special occasions 7 silly, unbelievable 8 the net of fine lines that spiders make

Scene 3: Fairy Godmoth The day of the party came. The cruel 9 ladybug stepsisters went to the party but Spiderella stayed home. She dressed in old clothes and did housework. She washed and dried 10 the dishes. She was very sad. (Crying) Oh, I wish I could go to the bug party. It would be so much fun. Spiderella was crying so hard that she didn t know she had a visitor. It was a brown insect with wings and a tiny crown 11. It was her Fairy 12 Godmoth 13. (Fairy Godmoth enters and taps Spiderella) Fairy Godmoth: Fairy Godmoth: Fairy Godmoth: Why are you crying Spiderella? (Surprised to see someone so suddenly) Who are you? I am your Fairy Godmoth and I will give you your wish. I wish I could go to the bug party. And you shall, my dear. Now, go and find an acorn 14. 9 mean, not kind 10 past tense of dry. wipe the water off the dishes. 11 the gold hat that kings and queens wear 12 a small creature with magic powers 13 almost like a butterfly but colours are not as bright and usually flies at night rather than the daytime 14 a smooth oval nut that comes from oak trees. Has a cap that looks like a cup.

Fairy Godmoth: Spiderella looked around and found a nice large acorn. The Fairy Godmoth flapped 15 her wings and the acorn turned into an acorn car with four strong ants to pull it. Thank you, Fairy Godmoth! What a wonderful way to travel to the bug party. But, I don t have anything to wear. Don t worry, my dear. I will give you a beautiful outfit 16. The Fairy Godmoth flapped her wings again and Spiderella s rags turned into a beautiful dress. She flapped her wings one more time and eight glass high-heels 17 appeared. Spiderella put on the high-heels and got in the car. Fairy Godmoth: (Very excited) Well, I m off to the bug party! Have a wonderful time dear but remember, be back home by midnight 18 or your car will turn back into an acorn and your gown will turn back into rags! 15 move wings up and down like a bird flying 16 parts of clothing that go together in a set. 17 women s shoes with tall, thin heels 18 12:00 am

Scene 4: The Bug Party (All the insects are dancing and enjoying the party.) At the bug party, Spiderella laughed and danced and had a wonderful time. (Cicada Prince enters the ballroom.) I have written a poem for the most beautiful bug at the ball! He s walking right toward me! You re bugging out sis, he s walking toward me! The ladybugs were shocked 19 when the Cicada Prince walked past them and stood in front of Spiderella. She couldn t believe it. The poem was just for her! You re a beautiful bug. And together, we could be snug 20. We could live in a rug 21, Or inside an old jug 22. (Claps her hands and is very happy) That was lovely! 19 very surprised 20 warm and comfortable 21 like a large mat on the floor but usually very nice 22 like you would see at a restaurant that the waiter uses to pour water into a glass

Thank you. Would you dance with me? Spiderella and the Cicada Prince danced together. But it wasn t long before Spiderella saw that it was nearly midnight. She ran from the ballroom so quickly that she lost all eight of her glass high-heels.

Scene 5: Found by the Prince (Enter the Cicada Prince and his servants.) The next day, the Cicada Prince travelled around the forest trying to find the beautiful bug from the party. Finally, he knocked on the door of Spiderella s home. (Cicada Prince knocks on the door.) (Asks Second Ladybug) Who could that be? (Looks through the window) It s the Cicada Prince! Well, open the door! Good afternoon, ladybugs. Hello, Prince! Would you like some sugar to eat? Hello, Prince! Would you like a glass of bug juice? No thank-you, ladybugs. Would each of you try on these glass highheels? The first ladybug stepsister tried on a high-heel. It was too small and didn t fit. However, the second stepsister found that the high-heels fit just fine.

Both Ladybugs: There! I ve put on all six high-heels. I am your true love. Now, give me a big cicada kiss! Not so fast! There are eight high-heels, not six. (Surprised) Eight high-heels! Just then, the Cicada Prince saw Spiderella. He thought he had seen her before so he asked her to try on the glass high-heels. They fit! And she had the right number of legs. He had found his love bug. It s you! You are the beautiful bug from the party. I love you! Say you ll be my little spider wife. Of course I will, my prince. But I don t like to wear high-heels; they re really hard to walk around in. And so, Spiderella and the Cicada Prince lived happily ever after. The prince often made up silly poems, and Spiderella always went barefoot 23. 23 not wearing socks or shoes
