From the Chair I offered my services as a marshal in 2010 and enjoyed this big community event. By 2012, I had joined the committee to help organise. I didn t realise it was a group of just five people that organised the whole event, beginning to end that was unbelievable! Anson Westbrook, founder of this event, passed away in October 2012 as planning had just begun for the 2013 Carnival. Our committee was reduced to just four but without Anson we were lost: he had been such a big presence and he knew so much and so many people. We made the decision that we had to carry on for the community. That year was quite hard, learning so much. 29 June 2013, a lone piper played on the stage at the Carnival as a tribute to the Scotsman and his achievement for the people of Winton. There have been many changes, many new hurdles thrown in the way, and new rules and regulations that we have worked through to where we are today. For 2018, we are a committee of six all volunteers with full-time jobs, but passionate about making Winton Carnival a real community day for the people of Winton. How did it all begin? Who? What? Why? S o, now in its 13 th year, how did Winton Carnival all begin? Who better to answer this question than the widow of the man who started it all off: Roz Westbrook Anson was councillor of Winton East at the turn of the Century and really wanted to enhance the area of Winton. He started the farmers market and wanted to do more to make some kind of festival to put Winton on the map. So, he and two friends came up with the idea of a parade of local traders and amenities. The parade went through the high street and ended up at Winton Recreation Ground, as it does now. Surprised by its success, they looked to improve, so the stage and music came the next year and the fun fair a couple of years after that. Since then, it has grown and grown and certainly has put Winton on the map! Every year, members of the Westbrook family still assist to uphold the success of Winton Carnival in Anson s name.

proud to support Winton Carnival. We welcome the whole family for sight and hearing advice. New store now opened in Winton high street!
I began dancing at the age of six, studying Classical Ballet, Tap, Modern Theatre, Ballroom, Latin American, National, Disco and even Drama. One day, my teacher brought me to the front of the class to demonstrate and that was the start of me learning how to teach. Every week, I taught the new kids in each class. The time came to choose a career archaeology or dance and the rest is history! I went to full-time performing arts college for three years and, after graduating, I travelled the world performing, worked on cruise ships and, in between jobs, always came home to teach at my local school. After retiring from the stage, I returned to Liverpool and spent the next few years travelling around the North West, teaching in many schools and colleges. I continued on with my qualifications in both dance and drama. In 1999, I opened my own school, but after only a few years I relocated to Bournemouth. In 2004, I became an examiner and adjudicator for the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing). 2006 saw the opening of Hammond Academy of Performing Arts (HAPA) in Winton, offering tuition in all genres and today is going from strength to strength. Throughout the year we are involved in many fetes and performances, including our bi-annual show. It is my passion to teach and my privilege to watch my pupils blossom and grow. We welcome pupils of all abilities, so why not come and join us and be part of the HAPA family? Try a free class and you never know you may be the star in our next performance! We take pupils from the age of two and offer classes, small groups and one-to-one tuition. There is something for everyone, so take a look at our website for more information: www.hammondacademy.co.uk
