Welcome! You will find it all in Yuma leisure pursuits such as golf, parks, arts, culture, history, as well as a variety of dining options and premier accommodations. Visit the Yuma Territorial Prison and Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park to learn about the history of Yuma. Due to its desert climate, Yuma is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the sunniest place on earth, with 4,174 out of a possible 4,456 hours of daylight each year, or about 94% of the time. Average annual rainfall is only about three inches. Average high temperatures in January of 70 degrees bring approximately 95,000 snowbirds to Yuma County each year, doubling the year round population. Yuma has deep roots in the agricultural industry, with fields of produce and vegetables. A $3 billion annual industry today, with a year round growing season, agriculture employment is nearing 50,000. The primary crops include leaf, head and romaine lettuce, corn, cotton, broccoli, cauliflower, melons and citrus. Yuma County is first in Arizona and third in the nation for vegetable production, with local fields reaching dinner plates around the world. Yuma County is also first for lemon, tangerine, watermelon and cantaloupe production. Wheat is also grown, with most being exported to Italy. With ideal soil and mild warm weather, Bard Valley just north of Yuma is now the world s largest yumacommunityguide.com producer of premium Medjool dates. Yuma is home to two military bases, the US Army Yuma Proving Ground and the US Marine Corp Air Station, which has one of the longest runways in the country, shared with the Yuma International Airport. Neighbors Up and Down the Road The Foothills Yuma, Arizona The Foothills, east of Yuma, is a separate unincorporated community in Yuma County, offering its residents full services, many attractions, and recreational opportunities. It has easy access to I-8, with three exits - 9, 12 and 14. This rapidly expanding area grew 25% in the past 10 years, with a current population of over 27,000. There have been many efforts to annex this community into the City of Yuma, but local residents appreciate their independence and have resisted such efforts. The area is supplied by Farwest Water & Sewer, privately owned and operated. All streets are paved, accessing a variety of oversized residential lot options, including RV lots with pad and storage, park models, modular homes, and site-built homes, some valued at over $300,000. The newer cluster of homes comprise the more upscale neighborhood in the southeastern area. This area rises slightly allowing distant view. It s close to the Gila Mountains to the east. In addition to numerous desirable RV resorts, many of the private oversized lots are available for rent during snowbird season for those wanting a quiet setting without the RV park atmosphere. Enjoy all the Foothills offers with a variety of retail, dining and professional services, and local recreational opportunities. Somerton Just 12 miles south of Yuma, in the fertile Yuma Valley, you ll find the primarily agricultural town of Somerton, population 15,000. Drive the same distance south to Mexico as you go southwest on Hwy. 95 through San Luis, AZ. Somerton was established in 1898 and incorporated in 1918, on land once claimed for the fraudulent Rancho El Paso de los Algodones [land] Grant. This property along the Colorado River was very attractive to speculators. The U.S. Congress passed a law that allowed settlers who were on the land prior to May 25, 1898 to buy up to 40 acres for only $1.25 per acre. In addition to agriculture, there is some light industry starting up in Somerton. Citrus and vegetable growing and processing concerns employ many local residents, and some small commercial service companies are paving the way for more small businesses. For entertainment, there are many great places to eat lunch or dinner here, and the Cocopah Casino and the Cocopah Tribe s Wild River Entertainment Center, Museum & Cultural Center, & Speedway are recreational hubs. Check their scheduled activities and events while you re visiting Somerton. 4 Yuma Community Guide 2017 yumacommunityguide.com

Wellton Located 29 miles east of Yuma on the opposite side of the Gila Mountains, the town of Wellton is a lively center for business, services and recreation. During the winter season, the population of 3,000 almost doubles as seasonal vacationers flock to the many RV parks from the western states and Canada. It s no wonder, with so many warm, sunny days that the area in and around Wellton has become such a popular retirement destination. nce a water stop for the Butterfield verland Mail stagecoaches and then the Southern Pacific Railroad, this small town s history began with its founding in 1878. As cars came into use, Well Town, named for the water wells to supply the railroad, became Wellton which is now primarily an agricultural community. Coyote Wash Shopping Center is located just south of I-8 at the Wellton exit, on Commerce Way. The Coyote Wash Golf Course is a short distance south, surrounded by the master-planned community of Coyote Wash. San Luis Go an additional 12 miles south of Somerton, and you ll be in San Luis, just over the border from Mexico. The city promotes trade with Mexico with a combination of industrial, commercial and agricultural businesses. San Luis proximity to the border also provides a tremendous opportunity to leverage binational recreational and cultural assets. Shopping in the Mexican border town is always a favorite, and the open air markets in this town offer Mexican souvenirs, dentists, doctors and pharmacies within walking distance from the border. A rich heritage and cultural appeal make this city a unique community. You ll discover binational events ranging from a Corn and Date Festival, to the Tierra Sonora Concert and off road events. San Luis is the gateway to the Sea of Cortez where the Golfo de Santa Clara is merely 70 miles south of the border, which offers abundant recreational opportunities such as recreational driving, sailing, swimming and great seafood restaurants. The new coastal highway La Costera toll road connects Puerto Peñasco, Rocky Point to El Golfo de Santa Clara making a safe passage for visitors wanting to experience beautiful beaches, resorts, cruises, deep sea fishing, multiple water sports, and the famous Harley Davison bike rally. yumacommunityguide.com Yuma Community Guide 2017 5

Walk on the Wild Side at Yuma Parks Riverfront revival enters second decade with trail, education center by Ann Walker, Yuma Visitors Bureau In this desert city that long turned its back on the river that shaped its history, a milelong nature trail along the shore at West Wetlands Park marks the newest effort to expand access to the Colorado River. Complete with interpretive signs, benches, and even an outdoor environmental classroom amidst the tall cottonwoods, the riverside trail joins Centennial Beach and the rebuilt Stewart Vincent Wolfe Memorial Playground as star attractions at West Wetlands Park, which itself only opened in 2002. The new trail opens up groves of cottonwoods and willows that over the last decade have grown into a forest. Yuma Visitor Bureau When we started doing restoration, you couldn t even get to the river or touch the water because the non-native vegetation was so thick, said Charles Flynn, executive director of the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, which also spearheaded redevelopment efforts. We wanted to reconnect Yuma to the river that gives it life. We live in the desert. People just can t get enough of the water, no matter what the season, Flynn added. This work is not just for birds and animals but for people to enjoy as well. Yuma s 21 st century revival has centered on the Colorado River, with nine miles of paved, lighted trails linking a new hotel and conference center to two new city parks, two state historic parks now under local operation and hundreds of acres of restored wetlands. The trail system runs west from the visitor center to West Wetlands Park and Joe Henry Memorial Park and east through Gateway Park, the heart of the historic river crossing that first put Yuma on the map. Beyond the cean-to- cean Bridge, the paved trail skirts the East Wetlands for about two miles. In deference to the wildlife, this section is not lighted, but offers expansive vistas of marshes, wetlands, and riparian woodlands from dawn to dusk. For those who want to explore on two wheels, bikes can be rented at the Visitor Information Center at the Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park, 201 N. 4th Ave., by arrangement between Yuma Visitors Bureau and Mr. B s Bicycles. Since 2002, Yuma s environmental restoration efforts have been no small undertaking. Workers have planted more than 200,000 trees, plant and shrubs and moved more than 330,000 cubic yards of dirt to create two miles of channel and lakes in the once water-starved East Wetlands. As the tangle of invasive vegetation has been replaced with native trees and water quality has improved, wildlife has voted with its wings. The bird population has doubled and species diversity has increased by 75 percent. In addition, endangered Yuma clapper rails are now mating and nesting in the East Wetlands. Eventually, the various restoration areas are expected to provide habitat for more than 330 species of birds and wildlife. Ready to learn more? Exhibits at the Quartermaster Depot explain more about Yuma s environmental efforts, as well as the past, present and future of the Colorado River. Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area is an independent nonprofit corporation governed by a local board of directors. It was among the first national heritage areas in the West to be officially designated by the U.S. Congress. For more information, call 928-373-5198 or visit yumaheritage.com. Brush up, Arizona! Everything you need to know about caring for and protecting your teeth We all want a healthy smile and teeth that function properly. By taking preventative steps to care for your teeth, you can not only maintain a beautiful smile but prevent and lessen the time and expense of correcting and treating dental disease. The Arizona Dental Association recommends regular dental checkups and a consistent brushing and flossing regimen to remove plaque and harmful bacteria so that you can keep your mouth healthy. The best dental plan is prevention! according to Dr. W. Brian Powley, President, Arizona Dental Association. The vast majority of dental problems are avoidable. For most patients, having regular professional exams, x-rays and cleanings costs approximately $1 per day. Combined with a commitment to doing your homework, which means brushing, flossing, and watching what goes into your mouth, you can minimize your out-of-pocket dental expenses. Avoiding professional dental care due to lack of dental insurance is nonsensical. Schedule routine dental visits A visit to a dentist s office is an investment in you. These twice yearly recommended visits are important to evaluate overall periodontal health (the foundation of bone and gum tissue that support your teeth) professionally remove plaque and calculus, as well as checking for any signs of tooth decay, cracked teeth or restorations, and oral cancer. A visit to the dentist is also an opportunity to ask questions and discuss any pain, problems or other concerns. While the recommended number of annual visits to the dentist may vary per individual, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stress that it is important for adults to see the dentist on a regular basis to care for and maintain the overall health of the teeth and mouth. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the most frequent causes of tooth loss. People with a higher risk of dental and oral diseases, such as patients who have had periodontal treatment, smokers, pregnant women, diabetics and those with weakened immune systems, may need to see the dentist more frequently. ral health is inseparable from overall health and well-being. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children go to the dentist by age one or within six months after the first tooth erupts. Arizona Dental Association dentists also suggest eating a healthy, balanced diet and eliminating sugary food and drinks, such as soda and hard candy, because sugars bind with the bacteria in the mouth to create acids that cause decay. Parents should also be aware that children should not be put to bed with bottles filled with juice or milk. This can lead to yumacommunityguide.com Yuma Community Guide 2017 devastating rampant decay and infection known as baby bottle caries. Parents may also not be aware that bacteria can easily transmit from parent to a child. Never clean off a pacifier that has fallen to the ground by placing it in your own mouth, and avoid sharing eating utensils. Baby teeth are important to your child s development. Although they will eventually fall out, they serve an important role to maintaining the space for the development of permanent teeth. Most children should also get routine applications of topical fluoride to protect the teeth from breakdown from the acids that cause tooth decay. Sealants are also recommended for teeth that develop with deep pits and grooves that toothbrush bristles cannot reach effectively to help prevent cavities. Children with untreated tooth decay can experience pain and develop infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning, according to the CDC. In fact, toothaches are the leading reason for school absences. Practice good oral hygiene To prevent oral health disease, the Arizona Dental Association recommends people use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush their teeth twice a day with toothpaste containing fluoride to help strengthen teeth. In 2012, approximately 58 percent of Arizona s population on community water systems received fluoridated water, which keeps teeth strong, reduces cavities and prevents tooth decay. Flossing daily helps remove food particles that a toothbrush cannot reach and eliminates bacteria. The best dental plan is prevention! - Dr. W. Brian Powley, President, Arizona Dental Association The CDC recommends people should avoid tobacco in any form, which increases the risk for periodontal disease, oral and throat cancers, and oral fungal infections. More than one-third of all cancer patients also develop complications that affect the mouth, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Therefore, it is important that cancer patients are engaged with their dentist when undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Regardless of your dental history, it s never too late to visit a dentist for an examination and development of a treatment plan to address your individual needs and desires, Powley said. Remember, they are your teeth, and a dentist can offer multiple options to achieve the results you want to achieve. Don t be fearful or ashamed, Powley said. A dentist can help you get your smile back so that you can be healthy, function properly and feel confident about your smile. Buying local spurs an even faster recovery for the area. This Yuma Community Guide primarily supports and promotes locally owned and operated businesses, providing an excellent resource to seek the services and retail you desire. Find a Home! Real Estate Guide Sales Rentals Relocation Retirement Residential Homes Time to Buy! Yuma has been identified by Business Insider as being one of the top ten housing markets over the next five years, with the growth of home values here expected to exceed the projected national rate. Year-to-date housing sales prices in the Yuma area certainly confirm this projection. As of Nov. 18, 2014, the average single home sale price for the Yuma area averaged almost $150,000 - an increase of the 2013 sale price of $130,200, according to data by the Yuma Association of Realtors MLS. The Yuma market includes the City of Yuma and Foothills area to the east. The local market continues to be active, with increasing population and interest by the seasonal snowbirds desiring a more permanent winter housing base. Current activity is mostly with resales, but new home construction is increasing to meet the growing housing demand. The Yuma area is still a buyer s market, as prices are considerably lower than during the 2008/2009 real estate bubble when the average price peaked at $270,000. You re looking for a new home and need the right professional in the real estate business to guide you through the search. Call or visit one of these offices to see how they can help you find your perfect home for you and your family. yumacommunityguide.com Yuma Community Guide 2017 23

Arizona Grown is a program showcasing Arizona food and agricultural products. The goal of this program is to make it easier for consumers, retailers and restaurants to identify and purchase Arizona products. Besides eliminating the need for vast amounts of transportation fuel needed to ship food products, food safety and security issues are easily addressed when products from local farms and dairies are consumed. Buying AZ Grown benefits you and your community The best plants and produce come from Arizona. Choosing Arizona Grown products provides quality you can trust, see and - in the case of produce - taste. If you are an Arizonan, you can help the environment by buying Arizona Grown products. Motorhome wners Group Headed To Arizona In March 2017 Members of Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA), an international organization for people who own motorhomes, will pack up their modern-day stagecoaches and make their way to the Rawhide Western Town and Event Center at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, AZ, March 7 through 10, 2017. Located just south of Phoenix, Rawhide Western Town and Event Center will serve as the venue for FMCA s 95th International Convention, when the association makes a long overdue return visit to the Grand Canyon State. FMCA hasn t hosted an international event in Arizona in several decades, so we are excited to be making plans for this 2017 convention at what will be a really great destination for our members, FMCA national president Charlie Adcock said. What could be more fun than spending time strolling through streets and buildings that bring back the flavor of the ld West while enjoying a celebration of the motorhome lifestyle? n the last evening of the convention, Rawhide Western Town will be in full operation, and members will be able to join the public for loads of fun, food, and shopping. Before that, members will enjoy all of the activities of the FMCA convention itself, added FMCA national senior vice president Jon Walker. And as a bonus, we ll be able to bask in the warmth and sunshine associated with winter in Arizona! A key element of FMCA s international conventions is an unparalleled motorhome showcase. Top motorhome manufacturers and dealers will display their latest models. With the variety of sizes and floor plans, attendees should be able to find a motorhome to suit their needs. Some might be looking for a rolling residence for full-time RV living; others may want a vehicle to serve as party central for weekend tailgating during college football season; still others may be searching for a vehicle suitable for taking their kids, pets, etc. on weekend getaways or weeklong vacations. When it comes to outfitting the motorhome for travel, attendees will be able to head to the indoor exhibition areas, which will house more than 300 booths packed with a variety of RV-related products and services. FMCA events also offer motorhome owners, as well as those exploring the idea of ownership, opportunities for enhancing their knowledge via seminars conducted by RV experts. Nearly 100 different topics are expected to be addressed during the event in Arizona. Although the convention is organized for Family Motor Coach Association members, the organization also invites members of the public to attend and provides various admission options, including daily public gate passes. The association welcomes all motorhome owners as members. Dues are $60 for the first year and $50 per year thereafter. Those who do not yet own a motorhome but are interested in learning more may sign up for a subscription to Family Motor Coaching magazine for $30 per year. About Family Motor Coach Association: Enhancing The Motorhome Lifestyle Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) is an international organization for families who own and enjoy the use of selfcontained, motorized recreation vehicles known as motorhomes. The association maintains its national headquarters in Cincinnati, hio, and currently has more than 70,000 active member families. FMCA offers its members a number of benefits, including a subscription to its monthly magazine, Family Motor Coaching; a medical evacuation and travel assistance program; group rates on a roadside assistance program and on motorhome and auto insurance; discounted rates for RV tours and caravans; and a tire purchasing program. Perhaps the most important benefit of FMCA membership is the camaraderie and friendships that develop among people enjoying the common interest of motorhome travel and recreation. The organization can be reached at (513) 474-3622 or (800) 543-3622 and on the Web at FMCA.com. Don t Miss the Greatest Show on Wheels! What you need to know about Yuma s ban on using electronic devices while driving The ban, in effect since early 2016, prohibits drivers from using handheld electronic devices, including a cell phone, tablet or electronic game for talking, texting or any other purpose while behind the wheel. The ban does not include hands-free devices such as Bluetooth, law enforcement officers, emergency vehicle drivers on official duties, drivers on private property and those who are legally parked. CB or ham radios are also excluded. Tickets will be dismissed if drivers can prove they were contacting authorities. Arizona is one of two states that haven t enacted any sort of ban on texting or talking behind the wheel. In Phoenix, Flagstaff and Tucson, drivers are prohibited from text messaging. San Luis also bans use of handheld wireless devices. Fines in all cities are $100 or $250 (accident).
