August: On the 5 th & 6 th is the Michigan State Rally in Evart Michigan, and on the 13 th is the Southwest Picnic & Corn Roast at Rotary Park 2260 Dayton Xenia Rd. Bring a covered dish to share. I would like to thank Rick and Amy Jenkins for stepping up to help with M.E.C. Thank you both. Still need a Newsletter Editor to help with the newsletter. Colleen is stepping down as she and David are moving when he retires. SOON! Also need a Web Page Editor to replace David. THANK YOU BOTH for A GREAT JOB YOU HAVE DONE. We will miss you. I will still do the email and put the newsletter together and send it out. Also when you are in downtown Fairborn look for Our Plane at Main and Central. I think it looks GREAT! We all need to thank JOANN COLLINS for getting it done. She does a wonderful job for CHAPTER F. A BIG THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS! WE LOVE YOU, JOANN. Well, that s all for now. If anything comes up, I will get it out. TIL WE MEET ON the ROAD TO LIFE'S JOURNEY- RIDE SAFE, RIDE SMART & RIDE OFTEN and REMEMBER - OHIO RIDES and JOIN US for the JOURNEY Your CHAPTER DIRECTOR Ron Ely Remember it's not the ride it's the JOURNEY If you are planning to attend Wing Ding, please contact Becky and Lloyd Glydewell. Region D will be in charge of the Light Parade, staging, classification, judging and awards. The light show is Wednesday evening with staging/classification beginning at 7 pm. We should arrive at 5 pm. We are also in charge of the Grand Parade, Saturday 7 am. 2

If you haven't heard yet, next year's Buckeye Rally in June will move from Canfield to Mansfield. We are really excited about the rally being in Mansfield, and might even take the whole week off work to spend up there. This is such a great way to get to know different areas of Ohio, and Mansfield is especially intriguing. Did you like the movie ShawShank Redemption was made right there in Mansfield at the Ohio State Reformatory. There's a lot to explore in Mansfield. Rudy and Linda Copeland will still be our District Directors, so you know it will be a good time. The theme will be Mayberry RFD. It was a shame that attendance was down this year, because the entire district team worked hard and came up with a lot of fun activities at the Rally this year that promoted a lot of interaction. I made more connections with people at the Rally this year, than I ever have before. So, start thinking now, about going next year! Our Chapter's job this year was door prizes, which was as easy and pleasant as can be. Everyone gets a door prize ticket when they check in to the rally. In the Vendor area we had a table set up, and ticket numbers are drawn and assigned to the door prizes all throughout the rally, and people just need to come in occasionally and check to see if they won anything. Jail and Bail was moved up to the vendor area, and poor Ron Ely was stuck in jail for a while! On another note, Rick and I led our first ride this month. Well, sort of. There were only 4 bikes, which made it easy. Steve Williams, Bob Gray, Gene and Kathy Wallace showed up. It was an extremely hot day, and since there were only 4 bikes, we made the command decision to abandon the longer ride to Rabbit Hash KY, and made a shorter ride to Indiana. We had never been to Rabbit Hash before, and discovered there was nowhere to eat there, which concerned us, as we didn't know where to stop for that. The other concern, was that on a practice run, found out that there were roads on the route that we had been given, that were closed. Before the ride, we had tried to "design" a ride to Rabbit Hash, and find where all the closed roads were, and alternate routes, first using Google Maps, then other software, none of which worked. We didn't have a good old fashioned hard copy of a map to refer to. So, we basically led from Fairborn, to Austin Landing, and then Bob Gray took over and led us the rest of the way to a beautiful lake in Indiana and had a nice lunch. Thank you Bob Gray! So Bob then told us about the newer GPS systems that some folks use on their bikes, estimate about $600, and has software that can do exactly what we were trying to do with Google Maps, and design your own route from point A to point B. Until Next time - Ride Safe! And see you at the Hobo Breakfast! Your ACDs Rick and Amy Jenkins 3

Subject: Role of Ride Leader Are you a ride leader or just the guy up front? At every group ride, whether there are two riders or ten in the group, someone is The Ride Leader. A good ride leader demonstrates safe riding practices and understands that while we ride to have fun, one of their primary responsibilities is the safety of the group and does not put the group in danger. That s enough about that. What does the ride leader do? Determines the route Sets the riding pace and makes adjustments as needed Determines where and when break stops are taken Communicates road hazards as they are identified Communicates speed and lane changes Ask someone to Ride Drag Keeps the group on schedule Listens and responds to the Drag Rider and other group members This may seem like a lot of things which must be done by the Ride Leader, but all of these items are just good common sense. We ride to have fun, and being informed and safe are an important part of making a ride a good ride. The Ride Leader can t see all the riders in the group and must rely on the Drag Rider and others in the group about what s happening behind them. The Ride Leader must be responsive to the group s status and needs. Has the group completed the turn, is the group moving too fast, split by a stop light, a car or truck, has a rider stopped for some reason, etc. When you ride as the Lead, remember, you must respond and address the needs of the group and the Drag Rider. A good Ride Leader CAN BE LEAD from the rear. The guy up front cannot. Have Fun & Ride Safe Steve Nickerson Chapter Ride Educator 4
