President s Message Summer is officially gone and fall is here which in San Diego means more sunshine! Hope everyone had a great September. During the month Jerry and John mapped out the southern route of the 2014 National tour. We will be running this route on Saturday, Nov. 2nd from the 4 points Sheraton Hotel in Kearny Mesa. This route runs over the Coronado Bridge so come help us fine tune the tour route. Tony put on the northern tour route on Sept. 22nd with only a few cars, but we had fun. Our next general meeting in November will be the annual auction, so bring any unwanted items as this is the big fundraiser for the club and usually is great fun. Also, we will be electing our officers for 2014 and we are looking for a Vice President to lead us in the following year. October will see the annual speedster run Saturday, 19-20. If you haven t been to a speedster run come check it out and see some great cars. 2014 National Tour Notes The next 2014 National Tour meeting will be Wednesday, November.6, at 6:00 pm at Histerical Auto Works. All are welcome but please RSVP to Kirt at 619-749-3112 Sunshine Report Norm and Dolores Kling have lost their grandson. A special prayer needs to go out to the family as well to his 8 year old daughter who found her father dead on the floor of their home. Tony Bowker suffered a saw cut injury to three fingers on his left hand. Following surgery, he is doing better and is at home. Work on the kitchen remodel (complete rebuild) is going well and it is apparent that his Model T activities have not suffered. We wish him well and a full recovery. Judy Burrell is improving very slowly from knee replacement and has had several setbacks along the way with an additional leg infections. We look forward to having her back with us soon. Remember to call me at 949-492-4255 or email me at judynjohn@burrellteam.com when something happens, so I can send out cards or call. We care about all our members in the San Diego Model T Club. Judy Burrell Club Website Be sure to visit the club s website. Pictures of member s cars and car data are requested. Prerun of 2014 Beach Tour - 22 Sept 2013 Tony Bowker This tour is one of a series planned by the club to test the routes and instructions for the 2014 National Tour. The route started at the Four Points Hotel in Kearny Mesa and by 9:30 we had three model Ts and about 12 members. Greg and Cathy Rising brought their 27 Touring, John and Karen Pepe drove down from Temecula with their 27 Fordor and Jerry and Anna Yeadon drove up from Chula Vista in their 20 Touring. Other members there included Anne Tunnell, Kirt and& Drea Simpson, Mac with the trouble truck and Tony and Heather who were passengers in the Fordor. The route took us up Genesee Avenue to Torry Pines and the up the 101 to Carlsbad. Naturally we stopped at various beaches along the way. We even found free parking at Moonlight Beach, however we had lost Jerry who somehow was ahead of the rest of the group. Following a great lunch at Vera Cruz, the group retraced the route back down 101, moving inland to visit the Craftsmanship Museum and the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, then back along Genesee to the hotel. Mac followed us all the way, very comforting, thanks Mac. Model Ts ready to depart the 4 Points Sheridan in Kearny Parking at the beach Climbing the grade to Del Mar School Visit Invitation Our club has been approached by a teacher at the Lakeside Christian School for us to show our Model Ts to the kids on 9 October at 10:45am. We need at least three or more cars to make the presentation viable. Please contact Tony Bowker if you can make the visit. Scot Uran Family - Potato Stab 6

Tour to Sierra Vista area for Spring 2014. The HVMTC is planning a four day tour to the Sierra Vista region of Arizona in the Spring of 2014 and we welcome participation by member from other Model T clubs. We plan four days touring, so we need to book into the hotel for five nights, the rate at the Windermere Hotel from the internet would seem to be $94 per night but could be reduced if we were able to get a group rate with 12+ rooms. Saturday March 8, 2014 would be a simple run from Sierra Vista to Bisbee, the route out would be through Hereford, which is quite flat and a more direct route back which includes a long hill out of Bisbee, mileage would be about 60 miles. Sunday March 9, 2014 would be run north from Sierra Vista to Benson, (about one mile of freeway) then south to Tombstone and then direct back to Sierra Vista with a distance of 80 miles. Again there are no serious hills. We will include a stop at the Kartchner Caverns. Monday March 10, 2014 would be out from Sierra Vista to Patagonia for lunch through Sonoita and back thru the Army base over some really narrow, quiet but paved roads, with a distance of 80 miles with no serious hills. Tuesday March 11, 2014 would be a run from Sierra Vista out to Douglas, with lunch at the hotel and back to Sierra Vista for a run of 110 miles. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of the cavern visit, lunch in Douglas and a small tour booklet. If interested, please contact Tony Bowker (760-789-3954) or tonybowker@aol.com Target: Ethanol Fuel Witnesses representing oil, fuel and petrochemical, live-stock, automotive, food, biofuel and environmental organizations testified before a U.S. House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on whether the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) should be repealed or scaled-back. The RFS mandates that an increasing amount of biofuels be blended into gasoline each year. It is the driving force behind the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s decision to permit sales of 15% ethanol in gasoline (EI5) in order to achieve the RFS mandates. Federal Committee leaders have stated that full repeal of the RFS is unlikely but reform is a viable option. The SEMA Action Network (SAN) supports reducing the RFS mandates and banning the sale of E15. Ethanol can cause metal corrosion and dissolve certain plastics and rubbers, especially in older cars. E15 can also burn hotter than EI0 gasoline and cause damage to certain high-performance specialty parts. Meanwhile, state legislatures continue to limit ethanol blends. Heeding the call of angry consumers increasingly wary of the corro-sive effects of ethanol-blended gasoline, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed into law legislation to repeal the requirement that all gasoline offered for sale in the state contain a percentage of ethanol. Under previous law, the Florida RFS required that all gasoline sold or offered for sale by a terminal supplier, importer, blender or wholesaler in Florida contain 9%-10% ethanol, or other alternative fuel, by volume. In Maine, SAN-supported legislation to prohibit the sale and distribution of corn-based ethanol was signed into law by Governor Paul LePage. Under the new law, 10 other states or a number of states with a collective population of 30,000,000 would have to enact a similar prohibition before the Maine law could go into effect. Earlier this year, Maine also enacted into law a bill to prohibit a person from selling gasoline that contains corn-based ethanol as an additive at a level greater than 10% by volume (EI0). That law will not take effect until at least two other New England states have also enacted laws that effectively ban the sale ofe15 gasoline. SEMA Driving Force Newsletter, Fall 2013 7
