Grass Carp Riverton has several small ponds located on common property throughout our community. These are integral components in the stormwater management system through Riverton, as they are engineered and constructed to handle excess water resulting from storms and spring snow melt. Retention ponds are typically constructed to normally hold a minimal amount of water, while detention ponds are normally dry until their area is needed for temporary runoff storage. The majority of Riverton s ponds are retention ponds. Retention ponds get an influx of silt and nutrients from stormwater runoff. This stimulates the growth of aquatic plants. These plants can provide habitat to support a healthy fish and wildlife population, or can lead to problems such as congestion of the waterway, significantly reduced water quality and excessive algae growth, often leading to resident concerns and complaints. In recent years, some of our ponds have become overgrown with aquatic vegetation, resulting in unpleasant appearance and odors. The control of aquatic vegetation can be achieved in various ways, including mechanical, chemical and biological methods. Riverton has decided to utilize a biological control measure to address issues which have developed in our ponds. The grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is one of the largest members of the minnow family and is related to both common carp and goldfish. Grass carp feed strictly by grazing on aquatic vegetation and have the ability to control a wide variety of aquatic plant species. Triploid grass carp are sterile and cannot reproduce, and are the only legal grass carp in New York, which is regulated by the New York State Department of Conservation (NYS-DEC). Triploid grass carp have distinct feeding preferences, preferring tender, succulent plant species over those that are tough and fibrous, and will not control emergent species such as cattail or floating leaved species such as water lily. A variety of factors can influence the feeding rate of grass carp, including water temperature, dissolved oxygen and presence or absence of attached algae. It is recommended that the plant population cover 20-30% of the pond surface area to maintain ideal habitat conditions. Due to various factors that impact triploid grass carp feeding, it is impossible to precisely predict the exact number of fish to stock to achieve the 20-30% plant coverage target. The only way to prevent excessive plant control is through use of an incremental approach. This approach involves the stocking of triploid grass carp at the recommended stocking rates, followed by a two-year waiting period for the fish to achieve maximal control. Then, if needed, more fish are added in small increments at two-year intervals until plant populations are reduced to the threshold level. Patience is critical. Plant control with triploid grass carp is a slow process, however, once control is achieved, it will last a number of years. Riverton has triploid grass carp stocking permits from the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Bureau of Fisheries office, and will begin stocking our retention ponds this Spring. These fish are an important tool in the management of our retention ponds. While fishing in our ponds, precautions should be taken to avoid injury or removal of the triploid grass carp. All ponds are catch & release only.
