what s on Three decades of radiation coming to Muswellbrook! Continued from front page. Licencee, Allan Moxham stated, It is very pleasing to be able to present this calibre of entertainment in Muswellbrook. The Radiators are true Aussie rock icons, and if the show is supported by the public as I think it will be, I will continue to present big-name acts at the Royal in the future. Little did anyone realise back in 1978 that The Radiators would still be together today, still hugely popular and still producing quality music with no signs of slowing down. Travelling thousands upon thousands of kilometres around the vast country of Australia, The Radiators have carved a niche into the books of Aussie rock history. They have headlined and shared the stage with other great Aussie acts such as AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, Dragon and INXS. 2004 saw the release of The Radiators 25th anniversary album and while the album sold well and had chart success, the boys were keen to try something new. In 2008 their controversial album Gimme Head was re-recorded and snapped up on the ARIA charts quickly climbing to the top ten in the first five days of its release. Touring extensively, The Radiators continue to do what they do best in delighting the legions of fans both young and old who still flock to grab a slice of living Aussie rock history and rock the night away to the great tunes that have made The Radiators a household name in Australia. So if you haven t heard them yet, be sure to head to the Royal Hotel in Muswellbrook to see the classic, rockin Rads along with support act, local performer and guitarist, Shay Burgess. Tickets on sale now and can be purchased from the Royal. For further enquiries phone the Royal Hotel on 6543 1070. Look out for Allison Forbes By Zack Phillips Music fans are in for a real treat next month when Muswellbrook s Railway Hotel presents Allison Forbes on Sunday 2 March. Described as having expressively warm, but edgy vocals thrown into a classic country pillow with a dash of bluegrass on the side, Allison Forbes has been predicted to change the face of country music. Growing up outside of Tamworth with the Tamworth Country Music Festival always significant in her life, she watched each year the stars gather in her home town, and she yearned to be a part of it. In 2011, she was accepted into the CMAA Academy of Country Music where she learned how to refine herself as an artist and a songwriter embracing what has made her different from everybody else. Since the beginning of Allison s songwriting career, she has been invited to perform at the Tamworth Chamber of Business Awards and the esteemed Roll of Renown Concert where she represented John Williamson at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. She has also graced the stage with Golden Guitar winners Luke O Shea and Bill Chambers. Having just finished recording her debut album (featuring Fire and Guns, Lie Lie Butterfly and What ll Happen to me Now) which has recently been released, she has also been nominated as one of the top 20 finalists in the running to receive a $50,000 scholarship to the Australian International Conservatorium of Music. Don t miss seeing this very talented artist on Sunday 2 March from 4.30pm 8.30pm in the relaxed and familyfriendly atmosphere of the Railway Hotel in Muswellbrook. Image: Allison Forbes. what s on Kennedy prepares for Hunter Mutual PBR Professional bull riding has been called the toughest eight seconds in sports. When a cowboy settles into the bucking chute, wraps his hand in the bull rope and nods to open the gate, he knows he is putting his life on the line when the mass of coiled muscle underneath him explodes into the arena. We re talking about a 900kg raging, twisting bucking beast whose sole purpose is to toss his rider straight over the moon. At 180cm tall and 82kgs in weight, David Kennedy hardly seems a match for this kind of raw power. Nonetheless the 29 year old husband and father of three has shown he has the right stuff which currently ranks him as 6th in the PBR Australian standings. Kennedy, a shed builder from Kyogle, New South Wales will be one of forty top-knotch bull riders competing at the Scone 2014 Hunter Mutual PBR on Saturday 8 March commencing at 7.30pm with gates opening at 5.30pm. Bull riders aren t known for having long careers due to the high risk of injury. Dedication, a positive mental attitude aligned with elite athleticism plays a huge role in determining the longevity of what Time Magazine voted the most dangerous sport in the world. Racking up three PBR Australian championship titles which took Kennedy to the Las Vegas World Finals on more than one occasion plus representing Australia in Brazil at the World Cup Bull Riding, the five-times Australian finals qualifier is keen to compete at next month s Scone event. David Kennedy has commenced the 2014 season with a steady start, and will be one of the competitors to keep your eye on at Scone, says Jackie Dunn, spokesperson for PBR Australia. With four stock contractors hauling champion bucking bulls to the Horse Capital of Australia which are to be matched up against the PBR s toughest bull riders it will be nothing short of a gruelling and spectacular event. Tickets are offered for pre-sale adults $30; Children (5-17yrs) $15; family $75 and VIP $70 via www.upperhuntertourism.com.au or from Scone Visitor Information and Horse Centre. equine trend & more Protect your bunny during hot weather By Tiffany Tung, BVSc (Hons 1) / Pet Medical Imagine living outdoors in a fur coat during this scorching weather. It could kill you! It can also kill your rabbit. Our pet rabbits cannot tolerate temperatures above 29 C. Here are some tips on how to keep your rabbit beat the heat and avoid heat stroke. Make sure bunny is out of the sun and that there is plenty of shady space for bunny to rest in. Place a ceramic tile or marble square in a shady part of the cage. The marble or tile stays cooler. Place a few ice cubes in their water crock so the water is tempting and bunny can also lie against the cool crock. Make sure there is plenty of water. Your rabbit needs five times more water than a dog of the same size. Mist the rabbit s ears. Rabbits dissipate heat through their ears and misting them will help keep the rabbit cool. Fill 1 or 2-litre soda bottles with water and freeze them. Once frozen, put the frozen water bottles in the hutch so your rabbit can lean against them to keep cool. If it s unbearably hot bring your rabbit indoors. Let him run around outside once the hottest part of the day has passed. Fly strike. In this hot weather, flies can strike and kill a healthy animal who has temporary loose stools. Older, disabled, long-haired or overweight rabbits who are not able to clean themselves are in even greater danger. The moisture, warmth, and odour of the stool attracts flies who lay their eggs. If open sores are present, or if thick fur is dampened with urine or faeces, flies will head toward these warm incubation areas to lay their eggs. Maggot infestation can kill your pet rabbit in just one day. Keep both rabbit and hutch dry and clean. Calcivirus. Hot weather also brings mosquitoes that carry calcivirus, a disease that is deadly for rabbits so deadly that there is no cure after infection! A safe and effective vaccination from your vet will protect your rabbit from this deadly disease. Image: Tiffany Tung BVSc (Hons 1) of Pet Medical holding Pete, a New Zealand rabbit. Sire s two city success excites three Hunter studs By Brian Russell The connections of three Hunter Valley studs had good reasons to be pleased at the success recently of the emerging good Danewin sire Excites, the source on the day of impressive winners at 1400m in Sydney (Red Excitement) and Melbourne (Sistine Demon), both second crop 4-year-old geldings. The main benefactor of this achievement was the Vinery Stud as they stand Excites (2013 fee $5,500), a son of the Danehill middle distance star Danewin (six Group1 wins) and the Success Express multiple Group 2 winner and Group1 placed Staging. Excites highlighted a nine-start career with a win in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes, a second in the Caulfield Guineas and a third in the Moonee Valley Vase (2040m). Two other sons of Staging are the reasons for the other two Hunter Valley studs, Widden and Kitchwin Hills, to enjoy the Excites double. Widden stands Excite s Redoute s Choice three-quarter brother Tickets and Kitchwin Hills has their Red Ransom half-brother Duporth. Currently represented by first crop 2-year-olds, Duporth won the BTC Cup (Doomben), STC Golden Rose and AJC San Domenico Stakes, and Tickets, a young sire whose first crop are yearlings, won four stakes, including the Pago Pago and Phar Lap at Rosehill Gardens, and was runner up at Randwick in the Sires Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes. Duporth has close blood ties with Saturday s Excites Sydney winner Red Excitement as the latter, now winner seven times and earner over $400,000, is from a Red Ransom mare, Red Obsession. Her dam Compulsion is a Danehill juvenile Group 3 winning sister Continued page 9. Experience. Sound advice. Positive outcomes. We think that just about covers it! out & about Kids get headstart to kindy in 2014 Thirty-one children will start kindergarten this year with the skills they need to succeed thanks to a partnership between Muswellbrook South Public School (MSPS) and BHP Billiton Mt Arthur Coal. The students, who come from Aboriginal and non-aboriginal families in Muswellbrook, are the first to pass through the Warrae Wanni Pathways to School program. Rebecca Langdon, Principal at MSPS, says the program has enabled the students to achieve the developmental, numeracy and literacy skills they need to have an equal starting place in life. Without this program these children would not have had any learning experiences prior to school, and it s really given them a head start and an opportunity to be working at or above their peers in their education, Mrs Langdon said. As part of the program teachers talk to students about what they want to be when they grow up, and parents are encouraged to become involved in their children s education by reading to their children and attending yarn up sessions with the Aboriginal teacher s aide. Allison Moore, the head teacher at Warrae Wanni, said that the program also builds relationships with essential services to identify and manage any developmental challenges at an early age. We work with organisations who offer vision screening, audiometry testing and occupational and speech therapy to create an optimal environment for the children s learning, Mrs Moore said. NSW Energy Coal Asset President Peter Sharpe said Mt Arthur Coal is delighted with the outcomes of this program to date. I would like to thank the teachers at Warrae Wanni for their dedication to making this innovative program such a success and wish the Warrae Wanni graduates all the best for their first year at school. Sire s two city success excites three Hunter studs By Brian Russell Continued from page 8. to Golden Slipper winner Merlene and from Bold Promise, the Luskin Star 1990-91 champion Australasian 2YO. Inbred 3x3 to Danehill, the Gerald Ryan trained Red Excitement was bred by Evergreen Stud Farm, Heatherbrae (near north of Newcastle), L. Nestadt and B. Kantor and sold for $32,500 at the Sydney Classic Sale. The dam went to Tickets last season. A graduate of the Perth Yearling Sale (account Alwyn Park Stud, Serpentine) at $150,000, the Andrew Noblet, Caulfield trained Sistine Demon is flying. Raced 13 times, he has won his last five starts, including two at Flemington and Saturday s Caulfield event, by a dominating three lengths. He is a half-brother to Sistine Angel, a winner of VRC Edward Manifold Stakes and MRC HDF McNeil Stakes and second in the Group1 Sangster at Morphettville and Group 2 Gilgai at Flemington. A filly, she is by another Vinery sire, Testa Rossa. Yet another Vinery sire, Myboycharlie, is the sire of their younger half-sister Artistic Lass, a winner twice in succession in late 2013, appearances at Canterbury Park (1900m, by 6.3 lengths) and Hawkesbury (2000m, 3.0 lengths). Their dam Famous Painter is an unraced daughter of shuttled Prix de l Arc de Triomphe winner Peintre Celebre and Rancheeta, a very speedy daughter of the mercurial Rancher. leisure & lifestyle Get fit with Fit-Club By Zack Phillips Are you feeling motivated to get fit and healthy? Come along to the Fit-Club in Scone which is a fun, communityfree event to lose weight, get fit and meet new people. There are five lessons each week with each session going for an hour. Adults have two separate sessions; one for beginners and one for more advanced. There is no set amount of exercise you must do, you just have to turn up and do what you can. You can even involve your children and bring them along to participate in the Fun-Fit-Kidz program which allows children to work-out and play games whilst their parents do the same. This promotes a healthy and active lifestyle in a positive environment for all families. The Fit-Club is a non-judgemental atmosphere, which offers free nutritional information, meal plans and health coaching. The club offers wellness evaluations and weigh-ins to help track your progress. The best part about the Fit-Club is its 100% free! The club believes people shouldn t have to pay for doing exercise and losing weight, and should much rather spend the money on healthy food and nutrition as exercise is only the start of the journey to a healthier lifestyle. For those who are less physical, and want a place to go before the Fit-Club, Agi Mooy is holding a Body Transformation Challenge at her home every Wednesday evening from 7pm. Bookings are essential - call 0417 238 378 for more details. The Fit-Club is on Mondays and Fridays at 6am; Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm and Sundays at 10am. leisure & lifestyle Back to School Give your child a head start at school. The first day of school can be quite frightening! There are many new faces, new rules and so much new information for your kids to take in. The new school year always presents children with a new set of challenges and new academic milestones to be achieved. A great way to support your kids during this period is to give them some extra nutritional support for optimal brain health. Support mental focus and behaviour with fish oils. Support of children s brain health has to start with the basics: a fish oil supplement and a multivitamin and mineral formula. The omega-3 essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are vital for the developing brain. Nutrients for the brain. To support the brain, certain vitamins and minerals are required, including zinc, magnesium, iron, B vitamins, folate and vitamin C. Iron is a key nutrient for the brain, and is essential for energy production. Improve kids concentration. Herbs that support mental performance and nervous function include brahmi, ginkgo and gotu kola. These herbs have been shown to improve memory and learning in children by improving their focus and resilience under pressure. Is the new school year stressing your kids out? If your child becomes stressed and anxious at the prospect of the new school year, a combination of calming herbs may be helpful. As well as the supplements discussed, there are some simple things you can do to help your kids cope with all the challenges and excitement of the new school year. If you would like to discuss ways to give your children the best start to their new school year, then come in and see us today at Scone Inspire Health.
