Pg. 2 From Your Hello E2 From your Chapter Director WHAT A MONTH OF RIDING WE HAVE HAD!! It seems these rides are growing, as we have seen anywhere between 12 and 20 bikes join in on the fun. This past month we have been to the Jailhouse Restaurant, Woodford Reserve Distillery and the Claudia Sanders Eatery all in Kentucky, along with a beautiful ride through Shawnee State Forest and a charity ride to a homeless shelter. E-2 ROCKS! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the ride leaders and tail gunners for organizing, arranging, leading and keeping all the rides fun and safe for all of our members and friends! Coming up late July and in August are the Region D Rally during the last weekend of July and the Michigan Rally the first weekend in August. Hopefully we will have representation from E-2 at these events, and if you plan on going to either or both, please let me know. Also in August, we have our Chapter E-2 Picnic on Sunday, August 7th. This is a free event for all our members, but we do ask that you bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share, along with your lawn chairs (if wanted) and your drinks if you want other than lemonade and ice tea. Steve & Pam Grieger have working hard on this event, and knowing them, it will be a day of good food and lots of fun. So sign up, and join in. And, as we get closer to the crowning event of GWRRA, Wing Ding, lots of us will be leaving for Billings, Montana to enjoy the festivities as well as to be present when Chapter E-2 s Chuck & Melanie Geggie are selected as the GWRRA International Couple of the Year! See YOU all in Billings. Remember, the first word in the GWRRA motto is FRIENDS! Well, wonder no more! This is not for the built-in GPS s as I don t have one so not sure if these instructions would work. I have a Garmin Nuvi 57, and the program I use is on the net: (free) Honda Trip Planner. This program allows you to set multiple waypoints, move them to different locations, print the directions and, download the trip to a.gpx file and also import a.gpx file. The.GPX file can then easily be loaded into your GPS unit. For example, let s use our recent ride to Jailhouse Pizza (I ll send you the file, just ask). Turn off Highways by clicking the box marked Highway. Set starting point: This will be A, and the address is Dunkin Donuts, then Point B is Jail House Pizza in Brandenburg KY HTP (Honda Trip Planner) will then show you a route But, I want to take more back roads, so, using the +, I zoom/magnify the map, and then moving the cursor over IN 62, right click to Add a stop 1. Make sure you are zoomed all the way in and the Add a stop is right on IN 62 This now shows 3570 IN 62 Cross Plains IN, and its Point C. Grab and drag it up so it then becomes Point B and Jailhouse is Point C HTP (Honda Trip Planner) will then show you a route Keep adding waypoints until you have all the roads/stops etc plugged in. I used 10 different waypoints, to keep us on the roads I wanted to ride on. You can then save the Trip, print the instructions and export the trip. It is exported/downloaded as a.gpx file and will be located in your DOWN- LOAD file. From there, attach your GPS to your computer and copy the.gpx into your unit. TIPS: When adding a stop, make sure it is right on the road you want: check to see if the address is XXX Whatever St or your GPS may run you in circles looking for the stop Set your GPS to Faster Time and, if you are not running on a freeway, click Avoid Highways and Ferrys or whatever (yes, even avoid U- TURNS) Your GPS may show your new trip in TRIP PLANNING HTP is far easier to use than it is to write these instructions. Please feel free to ask me any questions. If we have access to WiFi at the New England Club, I will bring my computer to demo. Ride safe and Hey, Let s be careful out there!! Joe and Dawn Domiano
Pg. 4 From the Hello E-2 The weather has turned hot and makes it hard to remember the word Wind Chill Factor. We have fun events coming up in the month of August again this year. We have our annual E2 picnic on August 7 at Sycamore park in Batavia. Please bring a door prize or two, a covered dish with food in it to share along with chairs. There are rumors of a prize to the top covered dish. Everyone brings their best dish and the picnic is always a lot of fun. Please see Pam Grieger if you want to volunteer to help with the picnic or if you have any questions. The next week end, August 13, we have our annual Dinner and Drive In ride led by Bill and Kathy Martin. The Drive In is located on State Route 125 near Amelia and is one of a small amount left in the state of Ohio. We meet at Mount Carmel Kroger and go eat and then travel to the Drive where we share additional treats and snacks that we bring. Bring chairs, food and a radio. We all get to park in the same row and it is a great time. If you have not been before, please mark your calendars. The following weekend is a ride to the Carriage Inn lead by Clark and Kathy Didday. They will be leaving at 9:00 AM from the Mount Carmel Kroger. Just a few days after that many will be heading to Wing Ding, located in Billings Montana to cheer on Chuck and Melanie as they compete and win the International Couple of the year. They have worked hard in GWRRA for a long time and deserve to receive such a wonderful award. Coming up in September is the Progressive Ride that is always a big hit, and other fun events. More information on these will be announced soon. Be safe and have fun! Bill and Penny Condo More Woodford Reserve Ride Pics See Page 12!!

Promoting Safe Riding Pg. 6 From your Ride Education Director Preparing for the Long Ride Some of us are Iron Butts. Some of us are marshmallow butts. Some of us would ride to the moon if there were more curves along the route. Some of us have more sanity than others Some of us are planning even as we read this, to ride the epic ride to Wing Ding 38 in Billings, MT. You ride so much and we talk about it so often, I know you practice T-CLOCS before each ride. But what is different when planning a ride of thousands of miles? A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. And a ride of thousands of miles begins with a little extra special consideration for our awesome Gold Wings. Come along with me as we ask Jason Baker, Service Manager at Honda of Fairfield to answer our questions. Lloyd: Hi Jason. I m Lloyd from E2 s Handlebars Newsletter. How s business today? Jason: Hi Lloyd. I thought I recognized you from somewhere. Well, we are so busy that the schedule is backed up about three weeks right now. Lloyd: Wow. That s good, or bad depending on which side you happen to be on. Jason: I could put on more help, but then the quality would not be what I expect. Lloyd: As you know, Wing Ding 38 is in Billings, MT this year. A number of your customers will be riding their Gold Wings out there, leaving in five or six weeks. They will be riding 4-5,000 miles. What do you recommend they do to ensure their Gold Wings will be ready for this trip? Jason: The 1800 Gold Wing is not known for any particular pattern failures or chronic weaknesses. That said, I recommend starting this long an adventure with what we call a Full Service. That is basically an oil/filter change, final drive oil change, and complete inspection and service of the bike. Depending on mileage we will recommend other services such as air filter, clutch/brake fluid change and coolant change to bring the bike s service portfolio completely up to date. Of course we ll give the tires a close inspection. As they say, it s not the mileage, it s the lack of maintenance Lloyd: Thanks for that good advice. As a service guy with decades of experience, I totally agree. I m sure you have many interesting stories of what has happened to Gold Wing riders on long trips. What do you see as the most important thing for us to keep an eye out for as we travel? Jason: Here in my showcase is an example of one type of serious failure we have seen. It s a rear tire from a one year old Gold Wing. The owner bought it new, rode it for a year and never checked the tire pressure. He rode it in here asking for a new front tire. Here is what the REAR tire looked like. It has internal belt separations, had bulges all over it and was nearly ready to blow out. Lloyd: That s amazing he made it here without a failure. So would you say that tire pressure is probably the number one concern we should be aware of? Jason: Definitely. A solid daily inspection of tire condition and pressure goes a long way towards ensuring a safe and uneventful trip. Lloyd: Jason, thank you for sharing your insight on Gold Wing preparedness for the long haul trips we Iron Butts are so known for. Now if I can just get you to schedule my bike in before it s too late Ride safe. Ride Prepared. Ride Confidently. And Have Fun See you around, This guy was Lucky Ride Safe Lloyd & Jean

July 16 Claudia Sanders Ride E-2 S HANDLEBARS Pg. 8 Our annual ride to Claudia Sanders restaurant started at Frisch s on Beechmont. Some folks came a little early for a good breakfast and by our 8:30 am start time we had perfect weather with 21 people on 13 bikes ready to ride. Joining us were Bill and Kathy Martin (riding drag), Joe and Dawn Domiano, Tom and Cookie Salamon, Fred and Kathy Starcher, Rick and Cathy Boehmer, Ed Ely and Gwynn Thompson, Steve Teal and Heather Sutter, Carthell Himes, Tricia Carter, Whitey Bell and Chuck and Melanie Geggie. We had a quick start taking I-275 to AA Highway. Then finally off on the side roads. We road the scenic curves through the beautiful state of Kentucky with rest stops in Falmouth and Owenton before arriving at Claudia Sanders at 12:30 pm. We were seated in our separate small room with the best servers we could have. They kept our drinks full and served our food hot. Claudia Sanders claim to fame is fried chicken and many of us enjoyed that while some chose to savor other food choices. While we were eating, we were surprised to see Dan and Barb Otto walk in. They were there celebrating with their family. We finished eating and after our group picture we mounted up and headed home. We ALL left full and happy. Bill and Kathy needed to get home so they left right away. Tom and Cookie took over the drag position for us and off we went on a quicker, but still very scenic way home. Our final stop was at the Dairy Queen in Walton, KY. After our ice cream we took our separate ways home. The ride was a joy to lead and we thank all who joined us for making it easy.
