Backfiring from the chair: The 16 th of June will see the first Baby Blanket Run to be held by Ulysses East Rand. I really hope and pray that this will become a long tradition within our chapter. For once, let s really make our breakfast run count! When you climb into your warm beds tonight, take time out to think of those less fortunate. Think of the new mom s, who, after having given birth to their child, do not even have a blanket to wrap their child in. Yes, this is a reality! As Twisty Two mentions in the Captains Log, the weather is going to deteriorate rapidly! The run will start at Bimbo s and will proceed to the Oliver Tambo Memorial Hospital, where we will deliver the blankets directly to the Maternity Ward, we will then head out to Que Sera for breakfast. Having never planned anything like this before, I am sure there are many ways to do this, but we are running out of time. We are going to do the Nike thing, and just do it! Each year we will gain more experience and I hope to see this grow into something far bigger than we ever imagined. So come on guy s, invite your friends, family and anyone on a bike that you come across. Let s really support this. I have been trying to get in touch with the contact person at the hospital to confirm the 16 th but have been unable to, I will keep trying. The badge for our inaugural run has been designed by Nigel and Camilla, and a fine badge it is. A trip to the Eastern Transvaal, Mhpumalanga, is scheduled for the first weekend in July. I want to make a block booking at the Town Lodge in Nelspruit for the overnight stop and will need to have an idea of who will be joining us. The cost per room is R745.00 for the night, with a maximum of two people per room. Some of the sights along the route will include Lisbon Falls, God s Window and Blyde River Canyon. We will also visit Casterbridge Farm in White River on the Saterday. Sunday morning s breakfast will be at The Woodsman after which we will do the infamous 22 to Hazeyview and stop in at Perry s Bridge. The Route 66 show at the Barnyard is booked for the 12 th of July 2013, we already have a table for twelve booked full. A second table is in the process of being booked. We still need another 4 people to book this table full. PLEASE CONTACT PETER TO BOOK YOUR SPOT, or you will lose out. Till we ride again, Wells. Not for use by under forties Age restriction 40 SNLV 2
Captains Log: Sunday 2 nd June 2013 As per the previous three Sunday s, the weather was fantastic with just a little bite in the wind as it gusted through the bikes parked at Bimbo s. Some of our members were at the Paradise Rally at Waterval Boven in ET and some we suspect just rolled over and went back to sleep. Wells had ridden the 1000 km in a day run up through Eastern Transvaal and shared his moments on the run with us. The manne & poppies who came were: Wells Suz Bandit 1250 Anita Yam Fazer 600 Peter Suz 1000 GSXR Eve Suz Marauder Mike C BMW 1200 GS Trevor Triumph 1700 T-Bird S Graham Honda Gold Wing 1800 Nigel Honda Gold Wing 1800 Joe Suz 1800 Boulevard Lionel Honda 1000 F Nick Honda 1200 VFR Clive & Shirley BMW 1600 GT As mentioned in dispatches, the run was out to Ndlovu Lodge in Zwavelpoort (Pretoria East) and at 08H25 we saddled up and with yours truly leading and Mike C sweeping, we set off up Pretoria Road towards Petit. Peter and Eve had warned that there were Fuzz stopping cars and bikes near the Bunny Park so I led the pack at a very respectable 60 kph. They were certainly there and stopped us anyway, demanding to see our licenses. Peter, Clive and I were held while they allowed the rest of the posse to continue. Picture the scene: One cop stopping three riders in a group and then checking each rider takes time so I was very terse with the cop. How long have you been riding he asked. How old are you I replied? I m 38 he sed. Well I ve had my license twelve years before you were born I sed. That s when all conversation stopped and he waved me on. Most of the guys had stopped further down the road so I resumed leading and we blitzed on to Bapsfontein and onward to Zwavelpoort. As usual we got a good welcome from Maria and her capable staff who had a very nice buffet brekky set out in the dining room. The ambiance was soothing sitting there after brekky so we lingered awhile before leaving en-masse to Que Sera for some and home for the rest. Not for use by under forties Age restriction 40 SNLV 3
I m told that a bad cold front will arrive from the Cape by next weekend so I guess the idyllic weather we have been used to will deteriorate rapidly from here! So, until next weekend when we do it all again, I ll see-ya (disappearing) in da mirrors. Twisty Two. Spotted @ the Paradise Rally Funnies: Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 20 years ago, (when the Nats were in power) De Klerk said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land." Today, the ANC has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the price of Camels, Tolled the Highways and Byways and mortgaged the Promised Land to the Chinese. I was so depressed last night thinking about Jacob Zuma, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, corruption, the toll roads, retirement funds, etc... I called a suicide hotline. I had to press 1 for English. I was connected to a call centre in Pakistan. I told them I was suicidal. They got excited and asked if I could drive a truck... Folks, we're screwed...!!
