The Directors Chair 2 Off and Running in 2012 Jeanette & I are extremely proud to take over FL1-K as Chapter Directors. We will do our very best to serve the participants of this Chapter as best we can. We would like to extend a sincere Thank You to John & Kathy Organ for their outstanding leadership the past two years as Chapter Directors and before that as Assistant Chapter Directors. With the help of the great Chapter Team that we have assembled, we feel that Chapter K will continue to grow and be one of the most fun and active Chapters in Florida. We expect that this year will be filled with great rides, visits to other Chapters, and activities of interest for all our members to enjoy. At the Chapter Directors Conference, 7 & 8 January 2012, in Lakeland, Jeanette & I were appointed Chapter Director and on Monday, 9 January we held our first Chapter Gathering. Needless to say, we did some scrambling on Sunday & Monday to assemble our Chapter Team, to which we added Assistant Chapter Directors and Ride Coordinators, Julia & Greg Fitzpatrick, Treasurer Betty Brattain, and also named our 2012 Couple of the Year, Bill & Betty Brattain. Congratulations Bill & Betty. Senior Rider Educator Bill & Liz Maxwell, Assistant Chapter Directors Danny & Kathy McIlrath, Chapter Public Relations, Barry & Linda Udell Web Master Kathy McIlrath, Newsletter Editor Kathy Organ and Marketing Coordinator John Organ have decided to hang around to check us out. Another addition to the Team is Membership Enhancement Coordinator and Sunshine Lady, Jeanette Carr. Danny McIlrath will remain the fun loving 50/50 sales person and will be in charge of the Chapter Goodies Store and will also be the Chapter Technical Adviser. Running a Chapter is not all fun. There is a business side of operating a GWRRA Chapter and it takes volunteers, like those mentioned above, to handle the responsibilities of day to day functions of the Chapter. The Greatness of a Chapter is most accurately measured by the involvement of it s members. I don t know who first said that, but it rings very true when you check the above named individuals. As most of you know, Jeanette & I come to you from FL1-H Dayton Beach, where we were participants since April 0f 2002 when we bought our Illusion Blue 02 GL 1800. During our 9 ½ years with chapter H we were on staff as Flag Custodians, Assistant Ride Coordinators, Ride Coordinators, Phone Tree Coordinators, Web Masters, Assistant Chapter Directors and Chapter Directors. We ve held positions on the Florida District Staff as Assistant District Directors and District Directors. Thanks to Chapter FL1-H, who visited our first Chapter Gathering and brought 28 of their members. Don t forget the District Rally coming up on March 22 24 th. In the past I ve seen many members of Chapter K at the District Convention, all having fun and getting involved in the fun activities that the District Convention includes. We have secured several rooms so if you require a room at the WorldGate Resort for the Rally, let us know. Also coming up in July is the National Convention, Wing Ding, in Ft Wayne IN that promises to be one of the better rallies that Jeanette & I have attended. The dates for Wing Ding 34 are 4 7 July 2012. And please don t forget the FL1-G Deltona 50 s/60 s Sock Hop on 11 February 2012. Many of us are planning to attend so come on out, join in and have some fun with us. We look forward to great times with you at FL1-K and GWRRA events in 2012. Ed & Jeanette 2

Your Assistant 3 Chapter Directors Hello, Glad to be writing this article this month because this means the chapter is still up and running. As we all know the Carr s have stepped up for us and that I am very happy about. So now we can move forward with the growth of our chapter. I am looking forward to whatever is ahead. We had a ride on Saturday, January 14th to the rally in Lakeland. We had 11 people and 9 bikes. It was 36 degrees when I left the house and only got up to 57 degrees during the day. It was a long full day and rode 313 miles. The rally was good with lots of people from 22 chapters. We had a good turnout and everyone had a great time. The other night we had a kick tire with a very good turn out and there was a lot of laughing going on. We had our new shirt order in and I sold a lot of shirts. We still have 11 shirts in the store so if you want one please contact me. We had a night out and made a visit to FL1-H in Daytona and we made a good showing. I was able to win two door prizes so Joe was not happy as you know he never wins at our gathering. On Sunday January 29th we had a ride to the 4 Chapter Breakfast at East Lake Fish Camp sponsored by FL2-D Melbourne. It was a little cold in the morning 44 degree but did get up 70 for the ride back. But looks like everyone was suited up to stay warm. Got there around 11:00 AM had a big parking lot so easy to park. We had a good breakfast and visited with a lot of people. We had a good showing with 10 chapter members and 8 Goldwings. Those of you that might not have been able to make a ride we are sure having a good time. Remember the ride is great but building friendships is important too. I am hoping maybe more of you can make a ride with us soon. I know not everyone can make every ride so pick one that suits you and come out. So see you soon. Kathy and Danny McIlrath 3

Your Assistant Chapter Directors And Ride Coordinator 4 Greg and I have been riding motorcycles since 2005. We started off riding Suzuki Burgman s. After about a month, we decided these scooters were too small to be ridden long distance so we traded them in for Suzuki Boulevard C-50 s. In the fall of 2007, Greg decided to demo ride a Gold Wing. He fell in love with the Gold Wing and ended up making a deal on a 2008 Gold Wing. Less than twenty-four hours later, he had me convinced I d be happier on a Gold Wing, so I made a deal on a 2006 Gold Wing. I rode my Wing on two wheels for almost a year then decided to have it triked. We ve been riding seven years now and have thoroughly enjoyed our trips from Florida to Arizona, Utah and Colorado and back. This year we are planning on visiting the New England States. We have been members of GWRRA since 2008 and love to ride our beautiful Gold Wing Motorcycle s. We have had a number of rides and visitations during the month of January. We rode to Lakeland Fireballs Cowboys & Indians rally on January 14th, we visited Chapter FL1-H on January 19th, we visited Chapter FL1-G on January 21st, we had a kick tire on January 24th at Dunkin Donuts in Palm Coast, and lastly, we went to the Chapter FL2-D Multi-Chapter Breakfast that was held on January 29th at the East Lake Fish Camp in Kissimmee. We want to plan rides and kick tires to places you want to go to. During our monthly Chapter gathering, please write down your suggestions and ideas you would like to see on the Ride Calendar. Our Gold Wings are magnificent motorcycle s and are meant to ride, I encourage you to come on out and join us for a ride. Julia & Greg Fitzpatrick Assistant Chapter Director & Ride Coordinator 4

Your Senior Chapter Educators 5 Our riding habits and techniques must be constantly thought of as defensive. I recently witnessed a GL1500 T-bone by a pickup truck. Fortunately, the rider did not appear to be injured. The ironic part of this accident is that the rider was in a line of vehicles stopped at a traffic signal. The truck rolled out of a driveway and struck the rider, the truck was driverless. I do not know what the rider could have done in this situation but it does point out to be always thinking defensive. Team Riding Basics When you ride in a group, your actions not only affect you, but the other riders as well riding in a group is a TEAM effort. Each rider should perform a TCLOC prior to the ride, arrive in sufficient time prior to kick stand up and with a full tank of gas. A team will have two certified Road Captains; one is the Lead who controls the group from the front by setting and maintaining safe, consistent speeds and managing the travel route. The other is the Drag (AKA the Tail gunner) who ensures a safe spacing is kept within the team and that the speed is appropriate for keeping the team together. Also, assists in lane changes. These two positions have joint responsibility for the safety of the team and the safe conduct of the ride. C.B. radios are highly recommended because they provide a means of communication between the Road Captains and the team members. Not all riders have C.B. radios and they also can malfunction, for this reason we use a standard set of hand signals. A rider without a C.B. is placed behind a rider with a C.B. in order to receive the appropriate hand signals. Lane changes are coordinated between the Lead and the Tail gunner. The team follows the instructions of the Lead and moves as a team in unison or as an individual. The lead will call/signal single file for circumstances such as narrow roads, hills, parked cars, and city streets. A Good Team Member assumes a responsibility to ride with and work with the other team members for the safety and protection of the whole team. This is done by maintaining steady speed and spacing, announces obstacles, and maintains the formation (staggered) and a safe riding distance (spacing). The above information is an excerpt from the GWRRA Team Riding Manual which is available from your Chapter Rider Educators. Bill & Liz Maxwell 5
