It is very important when the road will allow us to we should always: Ride staggered formation Place your bike two seconds behind the bike in your side of the lane. Even though GWRRA says that trikes should follow the same rule we strongly encourage our trike riders to be two seconds behind the bike or trike that is in front of you no matter which side of the lane it is in. On our last ride we had so much space in between bikes that the lead bike and tail gunner could not reach each other on their CB. The message had to be relayed by someone in the middle of the group. Ride at your own pace, the group will adjust to anyone that is not comfortable at the speed the group is riding. When we change lanes the ride leader will always ask the tail gunner to secure the lane. Once the lane is clear the ride leader will tell you to look left or right, then move left or right. The ride leader will be the first to move, then each bike will follow using the same track. We will look like a snake as we change lanes. When the ride leader says look left or right and follows this by move left or right, if we just jump over no matter where we are in the group, we leave the impression that we do not know how to ride as a group. Page 1 After the meeting Stan and Nancy were gracious enough to open their garage and house to our members as a bike workday. The only ones that took advantage of their hospitality and worked on their bike were Rusti and Jerry from Hendersonville. Dave, Dianne, Gordon, Mickie, Janet and I were there to enjoy an afternoon with Stan and Nancy. We were disappointed that so few members were there to take advantage of Stan s shop and work on their bikes. Next year unless enough of our members request this special opportunity to work on their bikes at Stan and Nancy s this special day will not be scheduled. The weather has finally decided to allow us to ride our beautiful machines and not freeze or drown. We have some great rides scheduled for May, it would be great if our members could all enjoy these great rides, FNO and our ice cream social together. May2018 T Dave & Dianne Smith his month we talked about tire safety. Assistant Ride Coordinator Johnny Johnson brought in steel valve stems for everyone to look at. Valve stems are not only used to check tire pressure but they also are used to maintain tire pressure. It can be a real pain if your valve stem leaks air. That requires complete Ride Coordinators Safety Tip of the Month tire removal to replace the stem. If you are using the regular 90 degree rubber stems than they should be replaced every time you replace the tire. Otherwise you run the possibility of them developing a leak and that is not a side of the road type of repair. Steel stems are said to be good for 10 years and therefore cheaper in the long run. With the rubber stems it is necessary to hold the back side of the stem when placing a gauge on it in order to keep the stem from folding over or otherwise moving. The same applies when adding air from a compressor. This can be a messy process especially when it involves the rear tire. With the steel stems a gauge can be put on it, straight on without the stem moving. This makes for a quicker and cleaner check. Quicker and cleaner means checking gets done more often. Additionally, it becomes easier to add air since the stem will remain in place. Friends Night Out Tuesday, May 8th, Jonny Mac's Lowcountr y Grille & BBQ 3885 Hendersonville Rd Fletcher, NC The sturdier stem will also support a TPMS. A tire pressure monitoring system is an excellent safety feature to have. TPMS systems will give you continuous monitoring of the pressure in your tires as well as tire temperatures. Remember to always keep tabs on your tire pressure before heading out. Tire pressures should be checked with the tires cold. Run proper recommended manufactures pressures. Too low or too high can be hazardous to your health. May2018 Guy s Ride Newsletter Editor Thursday, my alternator died a block from our motel. Charlie quickly found a replacement, and Phil did the remove and replace. Friday Aces and Eights Ride Friday was beautiful day for a ride with twisties through scenic middle-tennessee. The general stores reminded me of where I grew up in west Tennessee many years ago. West Fork General Store, Alpine TN Swinging Bridge, Pleasant Grove Recreation Area, Celina TN Forbus General Store, Pall Mall TN Saturday Corvette Museum, Bowling Green KY At the motel, we were joined by another Goldwinger (third from left) who was on his way to the museum. I wonder what most of these guys are looking at. I didn t take the full museum tour, but I did ride the Corvette simulator. The racing program for the simulator was intense; steering was really tight. It was a couple of hours before my stomach settled down. Page 4
May 2018 Sunday Cumberland Falls State Resort Park and Back Home I discovered I had a flat rear tire just as we were leaving the motel Sunday morning. Phil saved the day with his Stop & Go Tire Plugger and Slime Motorcycle Tire Inflator. I have my own, now. From there, the group returned home with stops at Cumberland Falls shortly and then at the Bean Station Veterans Overlook. Page 5
