I expected more people when we were going out to Utopia since it is a pretty ride, maybe it was the fog in the morning. It cleared up by the time we got to Pipe Creek. After a nice breakfast at the Lost Maples Café we broke up into two groups. The larger group headed back to San Antonio while I and another headed out to ride the Three Sisters. After over 300 miles I was home by late afternoon. It is so nice living in south central Texas where it sometimes gets near 80 degrees in January. While at the Mid-Winter Roundup we received the yearly project for the district convention/rally. In the past it was to decorate a horse, jeep, boat, etc. This year we have three things to build or decorate. We need to build a pine car (from a kit) that will be raced according to official pine car derby rules and decorate a display board and a wooden gum ball (theme for the rally). I will be looking for volunteers who would like to help, especially anyone who has experience with racing pine cars. Texas District Officer s & Staff District Directors... Volume 32 Page 2 of 7 Issue 02 We will be giving away a free registration to TH-O s Bluebonnet rally (held on April 13) at our February meeting. You must be present to win and be willing to go. This meeting will be held at Logan s Roadhouse on February 6 th at 7:30PM, come early for dinner and camaraderie. The trip to Key West will be next month (March) so we will need to know at the meeting who is definitely going. Depending on how many people are going will determine whether we need to make motel reservations or just find a place as we go along. Again if you are going and want to see or do something special on this trip please let me know. Exact route and stops for roadside attractions will be determined by participants prior to the trip. The roundabout trip to Wing Ding via Canada will be leaving on June 15 th. A few stops along the way will be Mt. Washington, Bay of Fundy, Acadia National Park, Cabot Trail and Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. If you are planning to go on this trip please let me know so everyone can be kept informed. Also if you have any suggestion on what to do and see we need to hear them. Ride Safe and Often Bruce A. MacMaster, Chapter Director Rider Education GRAY MATTER By Jackie Vaughan It s that time of year again. It begins in the evening and continues until midmorning. That misty gray stuff that covers the landscape and coats the road with a thin film of moisture. Carl Sandberg wrote poetry about it; motorcyclists curse it. It s fog. Fog can turn the best road into a slippery beast whose breath blinds the rider. While there are some techniques to control the monster, there are times when it's wise simply to get off the road. Some riders measure the density of the fog by how far they can see ahead. They use the stripe method. If they can see twenty stripes ahead, the fog is only moderate. Ten stripes mean a fairly nasty fog. When it gets down to two or three stripes, it s time to pull off the road. One technique some riders use it to tuck in close behind the vehicle ahead. This is great unless the car suddenly slams on the brakes and gives the biker a tour of his trunk and back seat. And what does it mean when those tail lights suddenly vanish? Perhaps that he s closed the garage door. It is better to increase following distance to four to six seconds. This will allow the rider to react to any unexpected hazards. Since visibility is limited, it would seem better to use high beams to see further. However, fog is composed of millions of

Volume 32 Page 3 of 7 Issue 02 tiny droplets of water, and each of these is like a minuscule mirror, throwing the full power of the high beams right back into the rider s eyes and further limiting his ability to see. Low beams allow the rider to see. It is easy to overdrive a motorcycle s headlight under the best of circumstances. When it is foggy, there is only one thing to do-slow down! Fog is made of water, and that gets on the road, making it very slick. Riders should avoid sudden changes in direction and speed. Braking and acceleration should be done slowly. Corners and turns should be made as close to vertically as possible. And keep the gray matter in the brain working at full power. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR It is now February and I haven t had any articles or pictures from anyone in quite some time. Please look through your ride photos and send them to me with a short narrative of what was going on when they were taken. Volume 32 Page 4 of 7 Issue 02 50 th Wedding Anniversary A couple goes out to dinner to celebrate their 50 th wedding anniversary. On the way home, she notices a tear in his eye and asks if he s getting sentimental because they re celebrating 50 wonderful years together. He replies, No, I was thinking about the time before we got married. Your father threatened me with a shotgun and said he d have me thrown in jail for 50 years if I didn t marry you. Tomorrow I would ve been a free man! DENTURES Our local minister had all of his remaining teeth pulled and new dentures made a few weeks ago. The first Sunday, his sermon lasted 10 minutes. The second Sunday, he preached only 20 minutes. But on the third Sunday, he preached for an hour and a half. I asked him about this. He then told me, Well, John, that first Sunday, my gums were so sore it hurt to talk. The second Sunday, my dentures were still hurting a lot. Now the third Sunday, I accidentally grabbed my wife s dentures AND I COULDN T STOP TALKING!
