Keep Judy and me in your PRAYERS during this change over. September 3 rd, 2016 Hello Riders! Have you heard of the sacred, ancient and mysterious "Judaculla Rock" in Cullowhee, NC? Over 3,000 years old, 1,500 carved petroglyph symbols, authors unknown, guarded by a seven fingered giant, secret midnight rituals and more! Well it is an easy 2-hour ride from here through some of the most beautiful mountain country in the southeast. If you'd like to see this wonder, be at the Young Harris Citgo station for a 10AM departure on Saturday morning, 9/3/16. We had an early lunch at the Asian King Buffet in Franklin on the way to the "Rock"! Quite a few Chapter Members that went on this ride but memory fails me. My BAD! Continued on page 4 3

RIDE TO CARTERS LAKE Ride Report On Wednesday, September 14th, 2016 we had a group of 18 Blue J s and guests assembled at the Blairsville Marathon Station for a ride to picnic at Carters Lake. The sky was clear and temperature showing in the mid 70 s. With 6 bikes and 4 trikes, we headed west to Old Blue Ridge Hwy. and into Blue Ridge, GA. Here we crossed Hwy. 76 and taking Scenic Hwy., Sugar Creek Rd. and Boardtown Rd. we came to our first rest stop just before entering Ellijay, GA. The temperature was increasing so many of us shed some layers and opened up the vents on the windshields. Following the stop, we rode through Ellijay and found Hwy. 382 which took us on a winding back road to Hwy. 136 and Carters Lake. Entering the Carters Lake Marina and Resort area, we found the visitors center but no picnic tables. So, we crossed the dam and found the picnic area with covered pavilions. We enjoyed our lunch with a nice breeze blowing through the covered pavilion adjacent to the powerhouse dam. After lunch and photo op time, we mounted up and rode Old Hwy. 411 to Hwy. 76 taking us back into Ellijay and our ice cream stop at the DQ. From there we rode through Ellijay and got onto Hwy. 76/515 taking us back to Blairsville. Some folks left us to head home from Ellijay and others dropped off to take side roads home. Great day, with nice weather and fine folks to make for an enjoyable picnic ride. Picture on Next page 4

RIDE REPORT Meet Indiana Chapter O September 21, 2016 We had a departure time of 8:00 AM from Hiawassee Citgo Station to ride to Waynesville, NC and meet with members of GWRRA Indiana Chapter O. There were 7 Blue J s on 5 bikes and trikes assembled in the cool morning sunlight. These were: Dennis Bible, Nestor Morin, Jack Gottlieb, Fred & Carol Henige and Roger & Dottie LeRoy. With lots of concern regarding locating gasoline stations with fuel available, we rode directly into W. Waynesville and topped off the gas tanks. Roger had a front tire with a slow leak so air was added. Dave & Judy Hurd had make contact with folks from Chapter O some three years ago. This relationship triggered a phone call from Kathy at Chapter O asking if we would be interested in leading them on a ride during their annual 6 day stay in Maggie Valley, NC. So, after getting gas in Waynesville we rode to the rest stop on Hwy. 74 where they were waiting for us with 10 bikes and 19 members. They were a very friendly group that had been riding since their arrival in the Smokey Mountains on Sunday. In fact they had ridden the Tail of the Dragon and The Cherohala Parkway the day before. Following introductions, and determining that they had full gas tanks, we took to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Reaching the highest point on the Parkway, we stopped for a photo op. By now the weather was warning into the low 80 s and the sky was clear with lots of sunshine. There was very little traffic on the Parkway and the views were magnificent. When we came to Hwy. 215, we turned south and enjoyed some more twisties before arriving at Hwy. 64 west of Brevard, NC. 5

Continued from page 5 Riding into Brevard, we headed for the best Chinese restaurant in the Smokey s Twin Dragons. Dave & Judy Hurd were waiting for us as we arrived. They had a great opportunity to renew acquaintances. Everyone seemed impressed with the quality and especially the quantity of food available at the Twin Dragons. After lunch, we mounted up and took Hwy. 276 north out of Brevard toward Waynesville. A stop at Looking Glass Falls offered another photo op as some folks walked the stairway down to the river for a better view. Continuing northward over the mountain and crossing the Blue Ridge Parkway, we descended into the village of Cruso, NC. Here, we stopped at the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground to show them a motorcycle only campground and to take a break. We were disappointed that there were very few campers and the pond was devoid of large trout seen here previously. Back on Hwy. 276 north brought us to Main St. in Waynesville and we rode through the downtown business district. We stopped at Ingles parking lot to say our good-byes. Everyone was expressive of their appreciation of the fine ride we had. Roger added more air to the deflating front tire with the aid of an air-compressor offered by one of the fellows from Indiana and Fred s electrical connection. Some of the Indiana riders went directly to Maggie Valley and others rode along with us as we headed for home via 74, 23 & 64. They left us in Franklin, as they wanted to ride Hwy. 28 taking them to Bryson City, Cherokee & Maggie Valley. We put on a total of 285 miles. (The tire is in for repair at this time) By: Roger LeRoy Continued on page 6 6

RIDE REPORT PROGRESSIVE DINNER September 24, 2016 We had a great turnout for our 2016 Progressive Dinner Ride. There were 31 Chapter J members and guests partaking of a fantastic 3-part meal on a Saturday that turned out to be an ideal weather day for our ride. We met at the Blairsville Marathon Station at noon with everyone ready to ride in 4 cars and 13 bikes/trikes. First, we rode to Dick & Diane Schmidt's home located just off the 4-lane highway near Queen's Gap Road. With a large driveway and lawn we had plenty of parking on a hard surface area. Dick had offered a number of kickstand supports, but we really didn't need them. The salad/appetizer offering was more than plentiful. We were presented with salad, dressings, veggie sticks w/ranch dressing, cheese wraps, weenies w/sauce and drinks consisting of lemonade, sangria and water. Being the noon hour plus, everyone had to control themselves knowing that we still had the main entree and desserts to look forward to. With seating on the porch and gazebo, folks took advantage of the shady areas, warm weather, cool breeze and relaxed in the moment. Continued 7

A little after 1:00 PM, we left for our ride along Pleasant Grove Road, which took us through some backcountry to Old Blue Ridge Hwy. Turning left; we rode through Blairsville and Young Harris on Hwy. 76 to Nick & Sandy George's located in the Pine Crest Development. Everyone found parking in the driveway, by the lower garage, or on the roadway. When we go to Nick's we all know that wine is the essential ingredient for any gathering in his home. And for those that imbibe, there was no shortage of wine. Nick & Sandy had prepared a fantastic main course for us all. Included were pork chops smothered in sweet potato gravy, green beans w/onions, biscuits w/butter, lemonade and water. The pork chops were extra-large so some shared one with their partner while some returned for a second helping. Seating was ample with a screened-in porch, dining table and extra tables arranged in the living room and entry as well as the kitchen counter. By now, the outside temperature was nearing 90 degrees so the air conditioning and breezy porch were ideal. It was a little after 3:00 PM when we got everyone back on or in their vehicles and headed off to Cleveland, GA for dessert at Gordon & Sandy Tomb's. This 53-mile journey gave us a chance to digest the appetizer/main entree portions of our dinner. And as is always true, Gold Wingers will endure most any travel hardship to get to the dessert. We traveled on Hwy. 76, Track Rock Gap Rd., Track Rock Church Rd, Town Creek School Rd., Hwy. 180, Wolf Stake Gap Rd., Craig Gap Rd., Richard Russell Scenic Hwy., Hwy. 75A, Asbestos Rd. (which I missed), Hwy. 75, Old Nacoochee Rd. and a couple more city streets before reaching the Tomb's residence. Again, plenty of parking for the bikes/trikes and the cars had a parking lot located across the street from their house. Now for the desserts! The selection seemed endless. Gordon & Sandy, with the help of Judy Hurd, Jill McDaris & Iris Morin, provided us with pies, cakes, sauces, cookies, candy and drinks including beer, soda and water. Folks were making repeated trips to the kitchen to sample different offerings that would make a diabetic envious of those tasting a new sweet treat. Timing was perfect as most of the group dispersed a little after 5:00 PM, leaving plenty of daylight to make the journey to their homes. Everyone I talked to declared the 2016 Progressive Dinner a rousing success. Kudos to Jill McDaris, with help from Barbara Schleicher, for the tremendous job in putting together this event. A big THANK YOU to the three hosts, The Schmidt's, The George's and the Tomb's for supplying and preparing the meals and for graciously offering their homes to us all. by: Roger LeRoy Wednesday September 28 th Sandy Gordon Kostas (Greek Restaurant) in Dillsboro, N.C. The route taken was from Hiawassee to Hayesville where the group picked up 64 east to Franklin then route 441/23 to Dillsboro. The group enjoyed a variety of Greek and America food. After lunch the ride continued on route 107 to Cashiers, NC. Turning right we found ourselves on 64 West where route 106 aided our escape from N.C. We returned to Clayton where the group excluding Gordon -Sandy returned to Hiawassee view route 76. 8

There were 2 Bikes and 4 trikes. This made a group of ten people. Jack, Dick, Bill, Barbara, Roger, Dotty, Nestor, Iris, Sandy, Gordon. Thanks to all that rode!!
