Cleveland Photographic Society Amish Country Field Trip Saturday, August 15, 2015 Trip Coordinator: Rob Erick 440-570-3352 Feel free to call or text along the way with any questions This trip is planned to combine a few scheduled stops with largely freeform exploration of the Amish countryside in southern Holmes County. We will leave the tourist areas behind and explore county roads and trails to gain a feel of the country and lifestyle. PLEASE NOTE: We will suggest a variety of roads to explore that are truly off-the-beaten-path and turn you loose to explore on your own. Please keep the following in mind as you do so - for reasons of both courtesy and safety: - Expect to see buggies, carts, bicycles, tractors and other slow moving vehicles in both expected and unexpected places. WHENEVER you encounter a hilltop ahead, assume that a buggy could be just over the crest or being passed by another vehicle approaching you. SLOW DOWN in these situations - and whenever you do not have a clear line of sight. - The Amish are generally a private people. While we are visiting the area where they make their homes, please be respectful of their privacy and property. While some have religious reasons for not wanting to be photographed, others simply feel at times that they are treated as animals in the zoo and grow weary of being photographed without their permission. Do not tread on marked private property, climb fences or otherwise intrude on property without permission and please always ask for permission before photographing a subject. Our tour will consist of three specific destinations and we ve also provided a detailed map of suggested roads and trails to explore. Our three destinations will be: - The Farm at Walnut Creek - 4147 Country Road 114 Sugarcreek, OH 44681 http://thefarmatwalnutcreek.com/ We will meet at The Farm at 8:30 am and our wagon rides will begin at 9:00. We have arranged for everyone to have an outside seat on the wagon rides for close proximity to the animals and great photography. CAUTION: Be protective of your camera gear and adhere to the Guide s instructions when feeding the animals you ll really be up close and personal! Those with reserved tickets should check in with Rob Erick or Barb Cerrito at the Wagon Ride Barn. We have two wagons reserved and wagons will depart as soon as they are full. We will be taking the wagon rides ourselves and cannot wait for you if you arrive late please plan accordingly to ensure you allow enough time to arrive by 8:30am. No refunds can be issued. Those without advance tickets may purchase wagon rides at the regular price at the door. Following the 1 hour wagon ride, some may choose to continue to explore the Amish Farm House and beautiful grounds at the Farm or start to head out into the countryside. We ve provided some time to do a little of both and will then meet for lunch at:

- The Chalet in the Valley restaurant 5060 State Route 557, Millersburg, OH http://www.chaletinthevalley.com/index.htm For those who like to plan their meals in advance, you can download their menu here: http://www.chaletinthevalley.com/new_menu_2012.pdf the Chalet in the Valley is affiliated with and located across the street from the Guggisberg Cheese factory and store: https://www.babyswiss.com/ Our reservation at the Chalet is at Noon and the reservation is under Cleveland Photographic Society - Our last specific destination of the day will be at the Amish Door Restaurant, located on the way home at 1210 Winesburg St. - Wilmot, Ohio 44689 http://amishdoor.com/ad_lunchdinner.html (their menu is available at this web address) We do not have a reservation at the Amish Door but suggest you join us there at 6:00pm GENERAL INFORMATION: - Amish Country presents a variety of experiences for the photographer: o Scenic landscapes o Horse drawn wagons plowing the fields o Shocks of hay in the fields o Old barns o One room schoolhouses o Colorful laundry on the line o Buggies and bicycles on the roads o Etc., etc., etc. For this reason, you may want to pack a variety of photo gear: - Wide angle and telephoto lenses - Polarizer and/or Neutral Density filters - Tripod for panoramic shots - NOTE: If you don t have a lot of equipment, don t worry there will be PLENTY for you to shoot with whatever equipment you have! Other items to think about bringing: - Sunscreen and/or a hat - Bug spray - Sturdy shoes - A rain jacket this is a rain or shine tour! - Bottled water Important things to keep in mind: - If you plan to shop at a farmer s market or two along the way, please be prepared to pay in CASH; don t assume that all vendors will accept credit cards (The Farm DOES NOT accept credit cards. The Amish Door DOES accept credit cards and we believe the Chalet in the Valley does as well) - If you rely on your cell phone for GPS, please remember that service throughout Amish country can be spotty especially once you get outside the cities. You may want to have a map available just in case!

Suggested Routes: NOTE: The top of each map is always North 1 Reaching The Farm at Walnut Creek Feel free to plan your route to The Farm on your own to ensure that you arrive no later than 8:30 am.
