NHHAC News The Newsletter of the North Hills Historic Auto Club July 2017 Volume 47 Issue 7 A Message from the President Well, the 45th Car Show is history and all in all, it was a success. The rain held off just long enough to get everything done, except for passing out the trophies. Only two incidents came up one was a gentleman ran out of gas and the other was a gentleman s car wouldn t start and he waited two hours for help to arrive. I want to thank everyone who put so much time into this event to make it such a good time. I do feel bad for Mike Coco, however. I put him into a situation between two ladies at the registration table. The rest is history. So, thanks Mike, and I hope you ll come back next year! We had a nice trip to Conneaut Lake for lunch on the 7th, with twenty people attending. On the directions, I made the mileage a challenge, in that I tried to estimate from memory. I think you all know what happens with that! I just told everyone it was a test to see if anyone noticed. They did!! I m sorry to say that John and Fran Kaiser had to cancel the trip that was planned to Ohio, due to a health issue with John and too many cancellations. On behalf of all who have attended any of John and Fran s Ohio trips in the past, We thank you for the many good memories and times we had. You both put a lot of time into each trip and to all who made the trip it was well worth it! So again, Thanks, John & Fran! Speaking of tours, I know we have to slow down with age and we can t do as much as we would like, but I do miss Bill and Joan Artzburger on our lunch trips! (We hope you two will be coming to a future lunch!) The June meeting was fairly short, as the Penguins were playing and I knew that many of you wanted to watch the game. Congrats to our Stanley Cup winners!!! Remember, if you need any club apparel, Diane Otto has it all. You can call her or come to a meeting and she will have some of it there. If anyone needs a show book or dash plaque, let me know I have extra. See you at the next meeting! Your President Steve Illsley Since 1971 Have a safe and enjoyable Independence Day Celebration! See you at the Ross Parade on July 2 nd! Aspinwall Memorial Day Parade "It was a perfect day for a parade," said Jennie Barker, who has supplied the following photos. With all the starting and stopping and overheating issues that can present themselves in a parade, there wasn't a car trouble issue until after the fact; Antoinette Quinn's Mercury hopefully has been able to look into that carburetor issue. Answer: "Ohio City, Ohio claims the first accident involving a gasoline-powered auto, a little closer to what most of us think of as a car today. In 1891, engineer James Lambert was driving one of his inventions, an early gasolinepowered buggy, when he ran into a little trouble. The buggy, also carrying passenger James Swoveland, hit a tree root sticking out of the ground. Lambert lost control and the vehicle swerved and crashed into a hitching post. Both men suffered minor injuries." ("When and Where Was The First Car Accident" by Matt Soniak) Next Trivia Question Which car company spearheaded the effort in the 1950s to "free drivers from commercials and unreliable [radio] broadcast signals" by offering an alternative form of in-car music entertainment? Bonus: what two systems were invented by that company? Submit Photos, Stories and Events: nhhacnews@yahoo.com
