Please provide also short (background-) stories 1) Danube Day Celebrations National Administration Apele Romane and its 11 Water Departments have been participated at various actions regarding the Danube Day celebration on June 29 th. On the June 22 nd at Stanca Costesti Hydrotechnical Point have been taken place the official opening of Danube Day celebration activities, then the delegation of Ministry of Environment and Water Management from Romania met the delegation of Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Moldova. Other participants at the event were: ambassadors, representatives of non-governmental organizations like ECO-Counseling Centre - Galati (ECCG), GWP Romania, Ecological Society Aquaterra- Iassy Branch, representatives of National Administration Apele Romane - the organizers of the event from Romanian side and other various special guests. ECO-Counseling Centre Galati also organized a thematic exhibition named: Together for Prut River. Diverse literature, brochures, leaflets which have been elaborated in the frame of project: Unitary approach on Prut River for nutrient reduction and for transboundary cooperation (UNDP/GEF), have been also distributed. The project was developed in partnership with Ecological Movement from Moldova. On this occasion have been taken place the official launch of Ecological Expedition-PRUT 2006 The festivity is the first in a chain of more than 100 others within the Series of Events planned Across Danube River Basin to honor and cherish the Danube. Stanca Costesti Reservoir is located on the Prut, the river that border the two countries: Romania and Republic of Moldova. The Socialist Republic of Romania and the USSR Countries joinly built the Stanca Costesti Dam on the Prut River between 1973-1978 and thus creating a 70 km long Reservoir. The great festivity that both countries organized and enjoyed, the emotions and feeling of the hundreds of participants being quite hard to present, orchestra and folk players, singers and dancers or merely the audience adults and children altogether. After the official speeches, the young folk artists danced and sang, were presented the craftsmen art in the displayed 2

carpets, flower arrangements, the impressive horse show. Not to forget mentioning how tasteful was the traditional food. In Galati town, for the celebration of Danube Day during 27-29 June 2006 was organized an International Scientific Conference Past and Future in Establishing Institutions in the Danube Cooperation. This event was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with Ministry of Environment and Water Management and local authorities (among others the Water Management System Galati- Prut Water Directorate). This event brought together over 100 key officials, the international community, the non governmental sector representatives like Eco Counseling Center-Galati, Global Water Partnership-Romania and media representatives. The international scientific conference was organized on the occasion of the 150 th anniversary of the Danube European Commission. Ms. Sulfina Barbu, Minister of Environment and Water Management of Romania, Mr. Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Mr. Vasile Blaga, Minister of Administration and Internal Affairs, Mr. Constantin Mihailescu, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Moldova, International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River President from Moldova, Ms. Lucia Ana Varga, State Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Water Management, Mr. Victor Paul Dobre, State Secretary in the Ministry of Administration and Internal Affairs, Mr. Alexandru Galiatatos, State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Tourism, Mr. Erhard Busek, special coordinator of the Stability Pact for South East Europe, Mr. Phillp Weller, Executive Secretary of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, Mr. Mihai Capra, Prefect of Galati County, Mr. Jorj Madalin Mihailovici, General Manager of National Administration Apele Romane, Ms Petruta Moisi, President of the Eco- Counseling Centre- Galati, Mr. Liviu Popescu-President of the GWPCEE and GWP Romania, other NGO s representatives, media representatives and local actors participated at this events and also on the Galati Danube bank festivities. Because this year the floods affected many Danube counties in Romania, the Ministry of Environment and Water Management has launched a solidarity message Rediscover the Danube Soul help the People from the Flooded Areas. There were organized actions to raise awareness of the citizens, local 3

authorities and other local actors and to involve them in various campaigns for helping the flood victims. On 29 th of June afternoon, every official, media representatives and citizens of Galati celebrated the Danube River by festivities: contests, dance, art exhibitions, folk and fair, vessels parade. The Water Management System Galati within the Prut Water Directorate- National Administration Apele Romane organized the Danube Cross on the main avenue along the Danube bank. On the Danube bank, Ms Sulfina Barbu, Minister of Environment and Water Management of Romania awarded the children winners of the Danube Art Master 2006 Contest, organized by Eco Counseling Centre Galati for Romania. On June 30 th 2006, at Tulcea town were organized the art exhibition by the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority. Various art works produced by the young people have been presented and emphasized a clear message for the Danube River and Danube Delta protection and conservation. At local level, all Water Directorates from National Administration Apele Romane together with local authorities of the Danube counties organized various activities with the main stakeholders and citizens involvement in order to promote the solidarity message: Rediscover the Danube Soul- Help the People from the Flooded Areas and to raise awareness: conferences, contests, humanitarian activities for the victims of the floods, various exhibitions and concerts, nautical competitions. The major part of Water Directorates of the National Administration Apele Romane celebrated Danube Day by organizing Basin Committee s festive plain sessions. At this meeting participated River Basin Committee members, specialists in water management and environmental sciences field, representatives of water users from each river basin and representatives from local mass-media. On the main water courses were placed panels with the inscription: MMGA- ANAR Keep the waters clean and all Water Directorates of National Administration Apele Romane organized campaigns for water and river banks cleaning and dissemination campaigns for Danube Day celebration. Must be also mentioned the organizing of a Symposium by the Jiu Water Directorate-Water Management System Mehedinti: 4

Floods produced by Danube River on June 29 th 2006 at Turnu Severin. Water Management System Gorj of Jiu Water Directorate concluded an educational partnership with a kindergarten from Targu Jiu. The school from Carna village, Dolj County which was affected by floods from this spring, was endowed with educational papers by the Jiu Water Directorate s employees. In order to celebrate Danube Day, on the 27 th of June 2006 at the Siret Water Directorate headquarter, have been invited a group of scholars from Eco-school Catamarasti Deal- Botosani County, to participate to a mini-video-internet conference with groups of scholars from other danubian countries. The aim of this action was to exchange experience on the water resources protection. On the occasion of Danube Day, National Administration Apele Romane, Banat Water Directorate, together with Politehnica University Timisoara and with Romanian National Committee for International Hydrological Programme UNESCO has organized between 29.06.2006 and 01.07.2006 International Symposium Preventing and Fighting Hydrological Disasters. The Symposium was included in the annual calendar of IAHS UNESCO WASW, EWRA and on the Web Portal Papers INVITED. This event was integrated in International Initiative for Floods Program. In Crisuri River Basin the events were focused on developing strategies for the protection and sustainable use of rivers system and continuing to highlight these issues to local people. To assist in this, schools, local authorities and NGO s across 5 localities (Beius, Nucet, Stei, Campani, Pomezeu) were involved in hygienic activities along Crisul Negru River bank. The preparation of these actions started in June with a local meeting where mayors, NGO agents and school mangers were invited to discuss all the issues regarding Danube Day. In Beius city, Crisuri Water Directorate was honored to involve in their action also children from a Hungarian ecologic camp: Kumlo. It was a real success and mass media helped to disseminate this information. The Centre for Environmentally Sustainable Economic Policy from Bucharest NGO s representative of Arges Vedea River 5

Basin Committee has organized public awareness activities regarding the importance of the Danube River. 2) National Administration Apele Romane public awareness/activities The special poster Fish of the Danube Basin from the ICPDR, the ICPDR fish stickers and the Children Encyclopedia Life in the Black Sea (Part I Fish) have been distributed by the Ministry of Environment and Water Management through 11 Water Directorate of the National Administration Apele Romane in school all over the country for didactic purpose, in order to encourage the young people to act for the Danube Protection and conservation. In Crisuri Water Directorate, the Danube Day campaign looked to help the local community in finding ways to understand the Water Framework Directive and all the steps that Romania must fulfill until 2015. To implement this information among local community, Crisuri Water Directorate disseminated materials: Crisuri curate-un pas pentru Dunare - Clean Crisuri- a step for Danube River, which we will present in Products section of this document. The Water Management System-Galati of Prut Water Directorate has produced Danube Day T-Shirts for the cross contest and special leaflets for the citizens and different stakeholders containing the message Danube Day Rediscover the Danube Soul What organizations (governmental and non-governmental, cities, municipalities, media partner, schools, cultural clubs, etc) where involved?
