GATEWAY REGIONAL RETREADS RECAP Arkansas - Kansas - Louisiana - Mississippi - Missouri - Oklahoma www.gatewayregionalretreads.com Mar - Apr 2018 It s time to renew your memberships. The Membership Application Form is on Page 15. Be sure to complete all information including Email Address so we can update our records. Directors Notes We are into the month of May now and the weather is starting to turn in our favor finally. We here in Arkansas, have had some favorable riding days. Hope your neck of the woods is getting the same good weather once in a while. I mentioned April Fools Rally in Coffeyville in our last new letter and asked for support for upcoming rallies. Coffeyville folks put in a great deal of work for April Fools Rally, but the weather and it being Easter weekend did not help attendance. I and others that made the rally had a very good time, lots of food and the weather turned great for the Poker Run. We had breakfast on Easter Sunday before leaving for home, wish more of you could have attended. We still have four more rallies in the Gateway Region coming up, first is Spring Fling in Mountain View Arkansas, later this month (May 17-19), at present we have 71 folks signed up for the Rally. If you have not sent in your registration, get it in the mail otherwise you will miss a good time. You can find a registration form on our website or in this newsletter. The website is: http://gatewayregionalretreads.com. We also have the International Rally in St. Joseph, MO, then Dutch Treat in Russellville, AR and the Rally in Lake Charles, La. to end the year for rallies in Gateway Region. This makes for a very busy summer Continued Page 2 Gateway Regional Directors Omar & Dorothy Crafton 36 Waterfront Circle Lakeview, AR 72652 Phone: 870-620-0025 Email: gwregion2@suddenlink.net Newsletter Editor Dorothy Crafton Phone: 870-620-0025 Cell: 870-421-2639 Email: gwregion2@suddenlink.net RETREADS Motorcycle Club, International, Inc. Directors Notes Cont. You can find registration forms and fliers for all the rallies except Lake Charles, which is being worked on and will be put out as soon as it is completed. Some things to think about for this riding season: When approaching an intersection, look for vehicles that are also approaching the intersection. Insure they are not making a left turn or approaching the intersection to fast to stop if required. Don't be the first to enter an intersection at a red light or stop sign. North Arkansas Retreads April 22, 2018 Mountain Home, AR Hello Retreads, In the last newsletter I said I was sick of cold weather nothing has changed. We have had some beautiful sunny days but every week there are one or two nights where the temperature dips down to the freeze mark. I have faith that all this will be over with and the weather will be sunny and warm for the Spring Fling. At this juncture, I will be happy with hot weather. Speaking of the Spring Fling, most of the preparations are done. If you are not able to print a registration form from the website, simply send us a piece of paper with your name, address, phone number, Retread number, tee shirt size and color (either navy or white). Registration fee is $15.00 per person and the tee shirts are $15.00 each size S to XL. Sizes XXL to XXXXL are $18.00 each. Get your hotel or campground reservations made. The Best Western hotel is now owned by Econolodge with same phone number. If we can help you with any part of your registration or reservations, please call us at 870-491-5743. There will be two Poker Runs to choose from on Friday. On Saturday there is a Guided Ride with lunch led by Steve Wagner. Mark and Linda Stanton are handling Yard Games again this year. Make sure you try these games because we re upgrading prizes for winners of Yard Games. We will do the usual 50/50 drawings on Friday and Saturday, Wipe Out Board(s), $100 Bill drawing, Door prizes on Friday and Saturday, and a table full of Raffle Prizes to choose from. Gene s Gallery, Honda dealer from Springfield, will be at rally with trikes to test ride. We also have our own Linda Havner, who owns a Craft Shop in Norfork, will have a table of her artistic treasures, and a lady from Yellville who makes jewelry, will have jewelry for sale. Our Club has created a cookbook this year and we ll have a few copies for sale at the Spring Fling. There is no special evening entertainment. We feel like there is enough to do in Mountain View with Music On The Square, or you can sit around a campfire and tell lies with us. Our Friendship Rides are continuing to be successful. This past year Ron Tabor and Wayne Jolibois have both been under the weather, but Steve Wagner has assumed the responsibility for leading rides, and Ed Dillivan has helped also. We thank both of you guys. Steve is very good at finding new restaurants with good food and new routes to ride. He keeps it interesting. A big thank you to Mike Howard for the interesting and informative Safety Presentations he does at our monthly meetings. Mike gets their attention and their respect. His goal is to keep us all safe and get us home unscathed after our Friendship Rides. Continued Page 5 Page 4

North Arkansas Retreads - Cont. We lost one of our members, Gary Marchetti, a few weeks ago. Gary died at home of an apparent heart attack. Gary was a quiet guy, but he will be missed, especially by his coffee buddies. Can t wait to see y all in May in Mountain View. Take care. SW Louisiana Area Retreads SW Louisiana March 17, 2018 We met this Saturday morning, March 17, at the Iowa exit, Pilot/Arby s. This was our March monthly meeting. We talked about our rides and events for the remainder of the month and April. Five members and two visitors finished this short and sweet meeting off with a ride to Shucks in Abbeville. One couple who were guest was given a membership packet in case they were interested in joining our group. We have worked in two rides. The first one 4 of is rode to the Picket House on a Sunday for fried chicken and fixins. The second ride was to Hemphill BBQ where two of us met up with two members of the North Louisiana Retreads. Best ribs ever. The upcoming events are as follows. Breaking in a new ride week scheduled for the week of March 19. The odometer needs to read 1000 miles in a week. Plans are to include all available Retreads for as many days and miles as possible. Rides will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The next newsletter will let you know how well we did. Easter weekend I will be in Coffeyville, Kansas for the April Fools Retread Rally. April 8 2018 On April 8 SWLA Retreads had a Sunday afternoon picnic meeting. 10 Retreads attended. The attempt was to have a picnic before the weather got too hot, and we did. It was cold for us southerners. We had a good time anyway. We made a trip to Kerrville, Fredericksburg Texas Hill Country. 5 Retreads from Louisiana met up with Paul & Carolyn Corbello to ride and have a good time. We are always guaranteed to have a good time when with them. We met a new couple that were camping with them -- maybe they ll be new members in the future. All made a safe trip home. My mileage for the trip was near 1300 but Becky Ham topped my mileage. We are looking for more adventures. Continued Page 9 Page 6

SW Louisiana Area Retreads - Cont. April 28 2018 Work is under way for the Louisiana Retread Rally. We will do the Pre Rally in Natchitoches from September 30 through October 3. Then we will ride on down to Lake Charles Rally for October 4 through October 6 on Saturday evening. I hope that many will come from the Russellville Arkansas Rally on down to Natchitoches along with SWLA members that will be able to meet there. On Highway 6, West side of I-49, there is the Nakatish Campground and 3 Hotels. We have group rates at the Campground, Quality Inn and Econo-Lodge. The restaurants in this area are reasonable in price. In Lake Charles we have group rates at the A+Motel and RV Park, on Highway 27, South if I-10. Keep watch for more Rally information and registration. Our newest Retread, Errol Bollich and a former Retread, Max Smith have passed from their earthly journey. They have gone on to rider higher. Cuba MO Area Retreads Greetings from the "Cuba Bunch" Feb. 10, 2018 Our Feb. meeting was short & sweet due to the freezing rain we were getting. Jim & Mary, Marvin & Donna and Jim & Connie were the only brave (I guess that is what you call it) ones to attend the meeting. The smart ones turned around and went back home. We enjoyed our meal and then carefully drove home. The club had a cabin fever meal at the Silver Dollar Restaurant in Swiss on Feb. 18, 2018. There were 12 members and 10 visitors present. The food was great and the fellowship even better. A good time was had by all. Our next meeting will be March 10, 2018 at Dottie s Restaurant in Cuba, MO. March 10, 2018 We had pretty decent weather for our March meeting.not warm enough to ride, but it wasn t snowing or sleeting either. There were 12 members present and 1 visitor, Carol Longtine (Ruth Ellis sister). Joe & Ruth Ellis celebrated their 13th anniversary this month. No birthdays this month. Donated prizes were won by, Mabel F., Jim H., Les L., Randy J., Jim L., Joe E., & Jack F. Carol won the buffet ticket that was donated by Dottie s Restaurant. Randy & Jim H. won the 50/50 drawing. Jim H. announced all the rallies coming up during the year. Our next meeting will be April 14, 2018 at Dottie s Restaurant in Cuba, MO. The time for the meeting is 5:00 p.m. GOD BLESS AMERICA Connie Leach Reporting for Jim & Mary Hollandsworth Cuba Area Reps Page 8

Saturday was the Poker Run with Trish Decker winning 1 st Place. 2 nd Place went to Irene Bacon, 3 rd Place to Eddy Bacon and the BOOBY PRIZE went to Roberta Hoy. The 50/50 Pot went to Kevin Ashland & Eddy Bacon. The quilt made by Lois Robison was won by Millie Hendrex and the Mickey Mouse quilt went to Trish Decker. Sunday morning breakfast was attended by ten people. Lois Robison, Reporter Wayne & Linda Robison Coffeyville Area Reps Salina KS Area Retreads March and April 2018 We had two people at breakfast this morning. We received a call from Andelyn Smith of Wichita, that Fred had broken his hip and had surgery. He was headed to rehab. We did not have a meeting in April due to the weather. We received word that Fred is home and they should be attending next month. We had word also that Charles Lee of Wichita had to have heart surgery on the 17th. We have not heard how he is doing. Hope to see everyone in seven weeks at the International Rally in Missouri. Dan and Shirley Jones Salina KS Area Reps Page 9

Safety Tip Always wear an adequate helmet Wearing a helmet significantly reduces your risk of serious head injury and death in the event of an accident. In some states, wearing a helmet is mandatory for some or all riders. You should wear a helmet every time you ride a motorcycle, even for short journeys. Your helmet should have a thick polystyrene-foam inner liner, weigh about three pounds, and have a sturdy chin strap to hold the helmet on your head. Ideally, it should also have a face shield to protect your eyes, but you may choose to wear goggles instead. When buying a new helmet, make sure it meets the safety standards approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Approved helmets will display the DOT symbol (either painted or as a sticker), usually on the outside back of the helmet. Some helmets may also be certified by non-profit safety organizations, like ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and the Snell Memorial Foundation, but these certifications are optional. Check the label inside to see if the helmet is certified by one or more organization. Replace your helmet about once every five years, unless it shows visible signs of damage (like a crack), in which case you should replace it immediately. Page 10
