GATEWAY REGIONAL RETREADS RECAP Arkansas - Kansas - Louisiana - Mississippi - Missouri - Oklahoma www.gatewayregionalretreads.com Oct.-Nov. 2017 It s time to renew your memberships. The Membership Application Form is on Page 15. Be sure to complete all information including Email Address so we can update our records. Directors Notes Summer is gone, fall is here and winter is very close, so it s time for rides for the fall colors. It s a nice time to enjoy the country with fresh air and all the heat behind us for a while. Fall rides are cool and fun to do. Enjoy each other and get ready for the hot dogs and marshmallows over an open fire outside. Ride where ever your heart takes you and enjoy the change of the season and all the colors. Some of you know that we are giving up our position as directors and are looking for a replacement for the Director of the Gateway Region. We will do it until the end of 2017 and hopefully a new person(s) will be found to replace us. We are getting older and have family obligations we need to spend more time addressing. Wanda s parents are both in a nursing home at the present time and require a lot of our attention. We are both running out of energy at times just to keep up with the things in our lives. We will ride when time provides, or until God tells us when to stop, and be happy with four wheels. We have met so many great people in our time riding with the Retreads which we will never forget (if our minds don t get to foggy). Thanks for being Retread members and don t stop looking for more members as that is what it takes to keep the Retreads going so more folks can enjoy the fun we have had and hopefully continue to have as long as we can. Enjoy life to its fullest, be thankful for what you have, love your family and friends, and God will take care Continued Page 2 Page 1 Gateway Regional Directors Harold & Wanda Dissmeyer 8176 Oakland Phone: 870-431-4531 Oakland, AR 72661 Email: dissmeyer@centurytel.net Newsletter Editor Dorothy Crafton Phone: 870-620-0025 Cell: 870-421-2639 Email: gwregion@suddenlink.net RETREADS Motorcycle Club, International, Inc. Directors Notes Cont. of the rest. Want to say thanks to all the Retreads that have helped us on our journey in this position, we could not have done it without everyone s support. Harold and Wanda Dissmeyer Gateway Region Directors dissmeyer@centurytel.net 870-431-4531 Larry Patton. Larry was the previous President of the Retread Motorcycle Club International, Inc. He passed away on the morning of October 16, 2017. Please keep his family and friends in your Prayers. Ray Loop. N. Arkansas Retread Ray was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last Spring and passed away on October 6. He was such a congenial, kind-hearted guy and we will dearly miss him. The Club made a memorial donation to his church. Don Kester. Missouri Retreads. Don has had several health problems in recent weeks. He was called by his father to his eternal home on Tuesday, October 24, 2017. He will be sorely missed by the group. My how time flies. Only nine weeks until the New Year. It s hard to believe that yet another year has slipped past while I wasn t looking. Something that comes to mind as the year goes by are all the good times that we as Retreads have made of the year. One look on our Facebook (Gateway Regional Retreads) and you can see pictures and announcements for various activities. Most are from the Mt. Home Retreads However, I would love to see some of the same type of things from other chapters in the region. Mt. Home has a designated picture taker Colleen Snappy Howard. She was always taking pictures anyway so I asked her to start sending them in and we started adding them to our Facebook and our website. (gatewayregionalretreads.com) So if there is anyone in your group always taking pictures, have them send them to me in an email and I can put together the slideshow to be posted. Just give me a little information about the date, where you went and any other information. It doesn t have to be just Friendship Rides any event or activity where even one Retread attended. Please help keep our Facebook interesting Dorothy Crafton Gateway Regional Recap Newsletter Editor Email: gwregion@suddenlink.net Page 2

North Arkansas Retreads October 22, 2017 Mountain Home, AR Hello Retreads! Ahhhhhhh, Fall weather is finally here. We don t get the vivid fall colors in Arkansas, but the weather is cooler and fall flowers in the garden are looking much better. The Mountain Home, AR Retreads were well represented at the Dutch Treat Rally this year. I counted noses and came up with 19 members present at one time or another in Russellville. Some of our regulars were not able to attend because of illness or other obligations, but enough newer members made up for that number. Bobby and Sandi Moore do a really good job. We always have fun at their Rally. They had a new game called Bean Bag Baseball where we formed two teams and played girls against the guys. Do I even have to tell you who won that game? We didn t stay for the second match, but rumor has it that the winners tromped the losers even more the second time around. Steve Wagner has already built a game board for us and Sali made the bean bags. Just in case the losers want to have a grudge match. We re ready! This year a group of us rode up Mount Nebo for the first time and it was an interesting experience navigating the switchbacks. Most of us were on trikes, but Alan and Barbara were on two wheels. Kudos to them. There was a nice gift shop on top of the mountain so that made the trip even more fun for me. There should be lots of pictures on the website. On Saturday, October 14, we had our Annual Fall Picnic at Cotter Springs Park on the White River. The weather was a little warmer than we had hoped, but we did manage to have 53 members and guests. The food was good, the music was good (Thank you Garry Kingsland) and everybody had ample opportunity to get caught up with each other. Luckily for Wayne and myself, a crew cleaned up, packed up everything and loaded it into our pickup. All we had to do was drive home. On October 26 th through October 29 th there is the Second Annual Twin Lakes Thunder Rally held at the fairgrounds in Mountain Home. There will be vendors, a Beer Garden, musical Jam Sessions, guided bike rides, Poker Runs, Bike Games, Bike Show, Trick or Treat with Bikers, Raffle Drawing for Henry Rifle, and live music from local bands. On October 28, Kathy and Ed Dillivan are hosting a Halloween Party (costumes optional) for the Club. You should be able to see pictures on the website shortly afterward. Our Christmas Party is set for Saturday, December 9, at The Eagles Lodge in Midway, AR. We have a buffet dinner with Smoked Ham and everyone brings a dish to pass, we do a gift exchange, and a short Christmas Program to be planned by Colleen Howard and myself. Continued Page 5 Page 4

North Arkansas Retreads - Cont. The Club has managed to do a Friendship Ride almost every week. Some weeks the weather did not cooperate. We have had a shortage of Ride Leaders and Coordinators. Ron Tabor is still under the weather and Steve Wagner and Mike Howard were both without a motorcycle for several weeks, in fact, several months for Mike Howard. Both now have their bikes, so ride planning should resume as normal. Also, Ed Dillivan pinch-hit for us as a Ride Leader a couple of times. Thank you, Ed. Someone always steps up just when we need them. We just lost one of our members, Ray Loop. Ray was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last Spring and passed away on October 6. He was such a congenial, kind-hearted guy and we will dearly miss him. The Club made a memorial donation to his church. That s it folks! I can t think of any more gossip right now. Our 32 nd Annual Spring Fling in Mountain View, AR will be May 17 th through 19 th, 2018. We will put a flyer with details in the first newsletter of 2018. Everybody please take care of yourselves, have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas, and we ll see you next Spring. Keep that shiny side up, Anne & Wayne Jolibois North Arkansas State Reps anne.jolibois@yahoo.com wjolibois@yahoo.com (870) 491-5743 Page 5

South Arkansas Retreads October 24, 2017 Hello to all from Russellville! Bobby and I would like to thank all of those who came to the Dutch Treat Rally this year. Had a great turn out and 11 states were represented. A big thanks goes out to our group for all of their help, to the North Arkansas group, for Jumping in, and to everyone else that helped us out over the week-end. The words thank you don t show how much we appreciated each and every one of you that helped us out, and we mean it from the bottom of our hearts. Some news for those that were at the rally and didn t hear Bobby won the race and the championship along with it that Saturday night and thanks for be so understanding about him leaving a little early. And as long as I m talking about Bobby, he fell while getting down from his tree stand on Sunday, Oct 22 nd and is in the hospital. He s very lucky as he only ended up with two slight compression fractures in his lower back. Very painful, but could have been so much work. He s also having severe pain in his right hip and leg (this is the hip that was replaced several years ago. They have moved him into rehab, no surgery, but will have to wear a brace for 6 8 weeks. Asking for prayers please. It s going to be a 3 month or so recovery. The 2018 Dutch Treat has been set for September 27 th, 28 th and 29th. Hope you all can make it. This will be the 39 th year for the Dutch Treat. Thanks again to all that came this year. Bobby & Sandi Moore S. Arkansas State Reps Russellville, AR Page 6

Springfield Retreads The Springfield Retreads are very pleased to announce that we have three new members. We are happy to welcome them to our group and look forward to many rides with them. New members help insure the longevity of the club. They are vital to expanding the associations within the club. New riders are always welcome. It is with a sad heart that I must report the passing of long time member and good friend Don Kester. Don has had several health problems in recent weeks. He was called by his father to his eternal home on Tuesday, October 24, 2017. He will be sorely missed by the group. Many of us have made our plans for the winter. Some will travel elsewhere so they can continue to ride. Other folks will winterize their bikes for a long winter s sleep. Another group will continue to ride all winter when the weather allows. To that group we say congrats. You and your bike will benefit from continuing to ride. Winter riding apparel certainly helps. Electric gear makes riding in cold weather much more comfortable. A good choice of winter riding layers suffices well for some. Regardless of what you wear, be sure it includes safety equipment. Riding armor can make a huge difference in the event of an unplanned dismount. Good abrasion resistant clothing can mean the difference in getting the bike repaired and continuing to ride the rest of the winter or, perhaps, spending the rest of the winter in bandages waiting for the road rash to heal. Also don t forget just how important the bike is when conditions are not so good. Be sure to do a good ride inspection before every ride. For those winterizing the bike, it is suggested that you change the oil at least once a year whether the accumulated miles call for it or not. Oil will deteriorate over time. Old oil will accumulate moisture and contaminates. Do you really want your engine stored in a bath of dirty, fouled oil? Check your tires and replace if needed so your bike will be ready to go again when you are. Put in fresh fuel, preferably without ethanol, and add a fuel stabilizer. Run the bike long enough to get the treated fuel into all parts of the fuel system. Check the antifreeze, if your bike has it. If it, or the brake and clutch fluid, hasn t been changed in the last two years now would be a good time to do those critical maintenance tasks. It is recommended that you store your bike with no weight on the tires and covered. A battery maintainer will protect your battery over the long sleep. Do not use a trickle charger. A trickle charger charges at low current but continues to charge after the battery if fully charged. A battery maintainer will detect a full charge then go on standby. If you do opt to start it once a month or so, be sure to ride it at least long enough for it to reach full operating temperature. If you can t take it for a good ride, the bike will be better off if you leave it alone. If you are one of the fortunate, that can leave for warm riding weather over the winter. Be sure that your bike is ready and have a great time. Keep the dirty side down. Wiliferd Lair Springfield, MO Retreads Springfield MO Area Retreads Page 7
