The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone. - Harriet Beecher Stowe ARRIVES HOME. HE WALKS THROUGH AN EMPTY APARTMENT LOOKING AROUND. KNOCK AT THE DOOR. OPENS THE DOOR. A POLICE OFFICER AND HIS NEIGHBOR STARE AT HIM UNCOMFORTABLY. HE SHUTS THE DOOR IN SHOCK. IS COLLAPSED IN THE BATHROOM. PILLS SPILLED OUT OVER THE FLOOR. (V.O.) Nick, Nick. Oh my God! S BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING It is still dark outside as Nick bolts his eyes open after having a terrible nightmare. He looks over at a picture on the nightstand. Its a picture of him, his wife, and their son. FADE OUT. S APARTMENT LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON Nick is in his apartment on the phone pacing back and forth across the room. Are you the type of person that would have people over a lot? O.K. Where did you say work? (PAUSE) How long have you worked there? (PAUSE) Alright, well like I said earlier I have a few other people to talk to and I ll get back to you when I make my final decision. (PAUSE) Yep, O.K., thank you. Nick hangs up the phone walks over to a table where there is a notepad with a list of names and phone numbers that he has scratched off, and he scratches off the last name on the list.

2. S APARTMENT BUILDING HALLWAY - AFTERNOON Nick grabs his jacket and heads out the door of his apartment, he is locking his door as he turns around and sees his neighbor, who is leaving her apartment at the same time. (Somber) Hey Nick how re ya doing? Not bad, I guess, how bout you? I m good. You going to work? Naw, just steppin out for some air, and get some groceries. Oh, well I need to get some things myself so I ll join ya. Sure. EXT. SIDEWALK - AFTERNOON So for real how you doing? (sighs) I don t know. I m trying not to think about it right now. Are you sleeping any better? A couple of hours, then I wake up. I worry about you, you know. I know, Maddie.

CONTINUED: 3. Any luck with the roommate search yet? I ve narrowed the list down a bit. Good, I ll sleep a little better knowing you got someone in there with you. S APARTMENT - EARLY EVENING Nick is returning with a bag of groceries as he enters the apartment he puts his keys down and looks at the answering machine. He has one message. He pushes the play button. (V.O.) (On the answering machine) Hi! Um... I got this number from Diane at the Roommate Agency. My name is Adam Harvey. If you could give me a call back at 555-7466, I d love to speak with you about the room your renting. I m looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks! (Sighs) O.K. Adam let s talk. Nick lifts the receiver and dials Adam s number. Hello, Adam? Hi, this is Nick Rains... from the apartment on Fairfax? Right. (PAUSE) (PAUSE) No, no. I still have it, however, I have narrowed my list down quite a bit, so... (PAUSE) Well, I d like to chat with you a little bit, but I tell you what, I ve been on the phone talking to (MORE)

CONTINUED: 4. (PAUSE) (cont d) people all day. How would you feel about getting a cup of coffee? There s a place just down the block from here, a little mom and pop shop called The Tea Kettle. You know it? (PAUSE) Good. Say tomorrow night around 8:00? Alright? I ll see you then. You too. (PAUSE) Nick hangs up the receiver and pauses for a moment. A look of hopeful surprise washes across his face and he sets about putting his groceries away. The camera pans down to show the digital message indicator reading zero and blurs into the next scene. EXT. COFFEE HOUSE PARKING LOT - NIGHT Nick pulls into the lot in his down trodden car. He pulls into a space near another car where Adam, 28, is leaning against it. Nick parks and exits the car. (Walking toward Nick and holding out his hand) Nick? Hi! I m Adam Harvey. But my friends just call me Harvey. (Meeting Adam and clasping hands, as they start walking towards the restaurant) It s nice to meet you. I hope you haven t been waiting here to long. No, no. I just got here. (Adam holds the door for Nick to enter.) Thank you.

5. COFFEE HOUSE - NIGHT Adam and Nick enter the coffee house and stands by the front counter waiting to be seated. Hey, I m gong to hit the head and wash up real quick. Would you mind ordering me a coffee? Yeah, no problem. Adam heads into the bathroom while Nick is seated by the waitress. MARY Can I start you off with something to drink, hon? Yeah, could I get two coffees please? Cream? MARY Uhh, yes please The waitress nods and moves off camera as Adam seats himself across from Nick. The waitress returns almost immediately and places the two cups of coffee on the table. I didn t know how you took it, so I had her bring some cream. The waitress smiles at Nick and moves off camera. I just drink it plain. Me too. See, this is already going well. (Gestures to the counter.) I think our waitress has the hots for you man.

CONTINUED: 6. Mary is speaking with a coworker and giggling. As she notices the attention of the two men, she becomes embarrassed and flees to the kitchen. (Chuckles) Not me man. I think she likes you. Why is that? Nick lifts his left hand to display the wedding ring on his finger. Oh... you re married... does your wife live with... No, no. (Nick reaches into his pocket and grabs a pack of cigarettes and offers one to Adam while putting one in his mouth.) Smoke? No thanks, I don t smoke. (Sarcastically) You know they say you shouldn t smoke, that stuff will kill you. (Chuckles as he takes a drag.) Yeah, I tell myself that everyday. FADE OUT S APARTMENT BUILDING HALLWAY - NIGHT Madison hears someone coming down the hall and jumps up from her chair and looks out the peep hole to see Nick unlocking the door to his apartment. she waits a second for him to go inside before she slips her shoes on and goes to his door. Madison knocks on Nick s door as he opens it up. (Upbeat) Hey Maddie.

CONTINUED: 7. Hey Nick, I was wondering if you had some sugar I could borrow? Sure come on in. S APARTMENT - NIGHT Madison enters Nick s apartment and follows him to the kitchen as he is getting her some sugar. So how you been? Anything new? I m good. Not much new, however, I did find a roommate. Nick hands Madison a small container of sugar. and sits it down on the counter. She takes it (Pleasantly suprised) Really? Thats great. Yeah. He s moving in on Saturday. Thats great. What s his name? Harvey. Harvey? Is that his last name? (Chuckles) Yeah, its actually Adam Harvey but he said he likes to go by Harvey. Did you find him through the agency. Yeah.

CONTINUED: 8. Good. (Short Pause) I m really happy for you, I can t wait to meet him. I think you ll really like him. (Short Pause) O.K. Well I ll get back to my things and let you get back to yours, I was just wanting to check in on you. I know. (Beat) Thanks. FADE OUT APARTMENT - EARLY EVENING Nick enters the apartment and looks around, it s silent. Harvey? From the room down the hallway we all of a sudden see Adam poke his head out. Hey Nick. Back here. Still working on getting everything unpacked? Yeah, almost done. (Pause) Hey, what s the plan for supper? Funny, I was just thinking the same thing. Oh I got the mail, it s there on the counter.

CONTINUED: 9. Nick looks down and sees the mail and starts to finger through it. You like old movies? What kind? You like Alfred Hitchock? I have Vertigo, with Jimmy Stuart. (Opening a letter) Yeah that sounds good, it s been forever since I ve seen it. I think the last time I watched it was in college. Yeah it s been awhile for me too. (To himself, as he picks up the phone.) Why is the agency still sending me roommate lists? Hey wanna order a pizza? (Forgetting what he was doing) Alright. What do you want? Have you ever had a cheeseburger pizza? Yeah, cheeseburger it is. APARTMENT - DAY Nick is sitting on his bed in his room looking at a picture that is on the nightstand. It is of him and his wife. He touches the glass caressing his wifes face. He doesn t notice but Adam is in the doorway looking at him. Adam clears his throat. Nick looks up at him.

CONTINUED: 10. You okay? Yeah. Sorry I didn t see you. It s okay. (Pause) Can I ask you something? Shoot. What happened? With what? (Pointing at the picture) That. (Looks at the picture) You want the long version or the short version. Whatever you want to tell me. (Gazing off into the distance) I was at work, I was supposed to pick Luke up from the babysitters, but I had a fucking meeting. (Sighs) I called and told Morgan that she d have to pick him up. (Beat) She didn t want to be...because she had to get groceries and didn t want to take him along, but she did. (Beat) If I would have picked him up, she wouldn t have been on the road at that time, and we wouldn t have gone that way.

CONTINUED: 11. It s not your fault. Everyone says that. But I didn t need to be at that meeting. I was trying to show off, you know... impress some people. (Frustrated crying) A lady in a truck leaned down to get something off the floorboard and swerved into their lane. She drove off the road to miss the truck and lost control on the shoulder. (Beat) I didn t tell her I loved her when I talked to her. I didn t kiss Luke goodbye that morning. They knew you loved them. I know. (Nodds) I know. APARTMENT - DAY Nick is laying on the couch watching T.V. when there is a knock on the door. Come on in. (Enters but stands next to the door, not really entering the apartment.) Hey Nick, Hey Maddie, whats up? Not much, hows it going over here? Good, real good.

CONTINUED: 12. Where is Harvey? At work I think. Hmm. He s been living here for like three weeks and I haven t even seen him. When are you going to introduce me? I m sorry, I guess I never even thought about it. But I will, I promise. You guys getting along alright? Actually yes. He s pretty cool. We got a lot in common, and he understands me. So... Good. Well maybe I ll drop in later and see if I can meet him. Yeah, do that. He should be back around five, I m gonna head to the store in a bit, but I ll be back a little later. O.K. I ll see you later. Madison opens the door and exits. S APARTMENT BUILDING HALLWAY - EARLY EVENING Madison knocks on the door but there is no answer. turns the door knob and the door opens. She (into the apartment) Hello? (Pause) Nick? (Pause) Harvey?

As she does she approaches the bedrooms. She knocks on Nicks bedroom door. Nick? Madison opens the bedroom door and looks inside. No one is in the room. She turns towards Adams room and knocks on the door. Harvey? Madison opens the door to reveal an out of use baby nursery that has boxes piled up in it. As Madison looks in the room Nick walks up behind her. Maddie? (Startled) Oh Nick you scared me. What are you doing in Harvey s room? Nick looks in the room and sees for the first time that the room hasn t transformed into a bedroom but the storage room that it has always been. What the Fuck? Nick? Where is Harvey? (concerned) Nick? Does Harvey exist?

(Lethargic) I don t want help. Madison stands up, as Nick just sits on the floor slumped up against the couch. I ll be back in a minute, O.K. S APARTMENT BATHROOM - NIGHT Nick takes off his clothes and lowers himself into the bathtub. He leans back against the tub and rests his head against the wall, emotionless.
