1 VOLUME 16, ISSUE 10 THE BARONY OF ABERTRIDWR february AS THE XLVII RHOL The Rhol T H E N E W S L E T T E R F O R A B E R T R I D W R The Society for Creative Anachronism, South of the River Metropolitan Perth, Fremantle to Armadale TM s = Their Majesties King Felix and Queen Eva (ed) From the Seneschal Greetings Gentle Cousins, Shortly we will know the names of the Gentles who have nominated to become our first Baron and Baroness. Are you excited? I know I am! If more than one couple has nominated and been approved by TM s, you, the members of Abertridwr, will be asked to vote for whom you would like to see as the titular heads of our Barony. The usual procedure, should there be more than one couple, is to set aside a time for the nominated couples to address the populace. Should this be necessary, this will then happen at Wandi on Sunday 10 February at 3pm., after Council. What follows after is a poll, obviously, and to this end you will be able to record your votes one of two ways: On-line through a specially prepared program (preferable, as this will make it easier for TM s - details to be announced shortly). The whole process will be monitored by the Returning Officer, Baron Kilic. On a ballot paper, same as what is on-line. Once the ballot paper has been filled out, it will need to be placed in an envelope, sealed and addressed to TM s with Ballot Baronial Election Abertridwr written on the front. Once this has been done: The envelope should then be given to the Returning Officer, Baron Kilic. All votes, whether they be written or submitted on-line, will only be seen by Their Majesties, King Felix and Queen Eva. The results of the vote will be announced at Rowany Festival on March 29 or 30. As I will be attending Festival this year, as soon as the result is announced, I will be sending the swiftest messenger to the West to make the glad tidings known to all in Abertridwr. TWO WEEKS TO PENCAMPWR.......Have you had a look at the special Pencampwr page on our web-site yet? To all the Officers, your report for the last quarter is due to your Kingdom up-line by Friday, 15 February. I would prefer to have your report to me for Council on Feb 10 at Wandi but I will accept reports up until the 15 th. Yours in Service to Lochac, Mistress Liduina de Kasteelen van Valkenburg Seneschal gan Abertridwr http://sca.org.au/abertridwr/minutes/2013/minutes-2013-01.pdf Details in full can be found at the above address.

2 THE BARONY OF ABERTRIDWR THE RHOL ABERTRIDWR OFFICERS NEEDED Abertridwr Constable Needed The Constable handles security, safety, paperwork and legalities. As with all officers you need to be a financial member of the SCA Australia Pty Ltd. Applications should be sent to: Mistress Liduina, Seneschal Columb Mac Diarmata (Kingdom Constable) If you wish to apply and want to discuss this office feel free to contact Mistress Liduina for more details. COSTUMING WORKSHOPS So far the costuming workshops have been a wonderful success. There have been as many as 15 people in attendance, with a huge variety of garb being worked on, from English Tudor to Middle Eastern to Italian. The atmosphere is fun and the wide ranging discussions on garb are a delight to listen and participate in. Many bodices have been patterned, chemises, shirts, hats all coming along. It will be continuing for a few more weeks yet and it would be great to see a lot more people come along, to show and tell what they are doing, or to help out a new sewer or just to chat and have a cuppa. Everyone is welcome to come for the afternoon or just a little while, we'd love to see you all. If you would like to join us and need the address just send me an email at lestrell@iinet.net.au Ydeneya Beginner s Armoured Combat Course Greetings, The Beginners Armoured Combat Course goes into its 3 rd week on Sunday. We had 23 students attend on the first week with a 50/50 break of Authorised and new starters and I am happy to see the majority still there. The next few weeks will be the most interesting, from learning the last couple of basic cuts and begin merging together the individual techniques of Stances, Guards, Movements and Measure in to a more fluid form. I am looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday 3 rd of February as we pick up from the lessons learnt from week 2. Lord Galen Wulfric

3 THE BARONY OF ABERTRIDWR THE RHOL Al-Thing AS XLVII What an amazing meeting this years Al-Thing was with over 32 people attending some members returning and many new people all keen to have input into the Barony of Abertridwr. The Al-Thing was changed from M Lady Alessandra s residence to the Willagee Community Centre at short notice due to the unprecedented numbers wanting to attend. This generated a cost but meant there was space for lots and it was still air conditioned. Lots was discussed including Regalia for our new Barony, workshops to update and increase things such as wall hangings, chair covers and the like. And of course Pencampwr was discussed, including the need for extra equipment for this year, such as toilets and showers, and marquee for feast etc as the hall is getting too small to cater for us. Check out the minutes and see what was decided. The minutes of the Al-Thing can be found at http://sca.org.au/abertridwr/minutes/2013/minutes-2013-althing.pdf Thrones are a piece of regalia we will need. At the Al-Thing it was decided to take Lord Wod s suggestion of a box base that can store items and a detachable flat back that can be easily transported. Mistress Liduina suggested the base have piercings lined with red velvet. There was much discussion and the final consensus was to work on the Thrones and make them for as soon as possible, but if they are not ready for Investiture we are able to use the ones Kane and Rhianwen have with added bits to make them more ornate. Lady Rosamund offered to embroider central pieces for the back of the thrones. Kane and Rhianwen have also offered the use of other thrones they have for visiting nobles and Royals. All assistance in the finishing of these would be gratefully accepted. The back from this one with Dragons rather than birds. The box base from this throne, With the arms included.

4 THE BARONY OF ABERTRIDWR THE RHOL Ideas only.. Baronial Coronets At the Al-Thing we talked about trying to get the Coronets made by a local SCA Artisan. This will mean we have more and instant input into the design. The consensus seemed to be keep them simple and to have dragons on them. The Coronets can not be made in time so Viscountess Rhianwen has negotiated with the Baron and Baroness of Aneala to use the coronets that Aneala gifted to Rhianwen and Steveg some years ago. These coronets were the one that the Founding Baron and Baroness of Aneala were invested with. This will start/continue a tradition from our mother Barony of Aneala to the Barony of Abertridwr. All input on the design of the coronets should be sent to Mistress Liduina, the Baronial Seneschal For some ideas on what you might like to see go to http://www.dragonsjewels.com/baronial1.htm The Original Baroness s Coronet Calligraphed Scroll of Petition Baroness Branwen has volunteered to prepare the scroll of Petition for Abertridwr. The preliminary wording was discussed at Al-Thing and is presented here for comment. Please send all comments to Mistress Liduina, Seneschal of Abertridwr. Unto Their Celestial Majesties Felix and Eva, King and Queen of Lochac, We the cymri gan Abertridwr do send greetings and salutations and the hope that the gods make and keep thee healthy and terrible in Thy reign. We would petition and beseech thee to grant and bestow on our beloved lands the rank and rights of a Barony within Your great Kingdom of Lochac. While we ask this with jubilation and joy at our advancement we acknowledge our sorrow and sadness at the passing of an era as we move from Canton nestled within safe haven that is Aneala to Barony within the firmament that is the Baronies of Your Kingdom of Lochac. The privileges and responsibilities of the Baron and Baroness Abertridwr be bestowed by elevating and installing these members of our populace Candidate Y & Candidate X to govern and advance your lands of the three rivers. May it be that in time and with the grace of Y Ddraig Goch, they keep peace with our neighbours, bring all who are deserving and commendable to Your attention, encourage and protect the peoples who live and travel through the lands of Abertridwr, bring immediate and bloody retribution on those who attack Your shores from the West and respond with weapons, Bows and needles to the call for help and assistance from our Mother Barony of Aneala and all other lands within Lochac within the means and abilities of our people, "unless we happen to be at war with them" from this day forth until the world end or death take us. May the arms of the Barony of Abertridwr, Argent, a pall azure, overall a dragon passant to sinister gules, in chief a laurel wreath vert, forever fly high under the star that is the Kingdom of Lochac So say we the Cymri gan Abertridwr by these our sigils and signatures. FROM THE NEW CHRONICLER So how does one follow Lady Rosamond? a fine and gracious lady who did an outstanding job on The Rhol. I will try to continue the standard set by Lady Rosamund. In this my first edition as Chronicler, this incarnation, I hope you will allow some leeway for mistakes and the like. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to hearing from you all with your articles and photos and the like for upcoming issues. Officers you can have your reports printed if you would like. Any project you are working on can be added to The Rhol with photos and information. Your input goes a long way to making a great Rhol. In Service Rhianwen And so the office passes
