The Snowpoke News 176 Green Lake South Rd. 70 Mile House BC, V0K 2K2 250-456-7751 40th Anniversary / Membership Drive Spaghetti Dinner The Clubhouse was 'packed' with a great crowd enjoying the 1st event of the season. A fall theme of colourful leaves, grasses, flowers and candles decorated the hall. Hundreds of pictures and historical info blurbs covered the walls. Picture albums, newspaper clippings, past minutes, membership books and a video were available for viewing. Outside, the last 'wine shack' to be built was manned by Peter McKie and Art Groves. Drags, groomers and the Groves' classic sleds and sleigh were on display. Kim and her crew did an amazing job putting the meal together. It was truly enjoyed by all. Variations of at least 9 different spaghetti sauces made choosing the right one (?) very difficult! The home baked bread by Marie K. and Heather M. was superb. The historical video presentation after dinner impressed people with what had happened over the years. It was suggested that if there is space available in the monthly newsletters that a brief historical info piece be included. We will try to do this. THANKS TO ALL WHO ATTENDED. THANK YOUS to the following who made this event happen: Chris A., Maureen B., Linda C., Rita D., Jenny and Steve G., Art and Cheryl G., Marie K., Miriam L., Kim L., Peter and Susan M., Heather M., Pat O., Susan S., John and Diane S... President s Report... John Sullivan It s been a busy summer for the club. Photo: Bob Walker On April 25th, 2015, a General Meeting of ABC voted for their dissolution and for a soft merger with BC Snowmobile Federation. This merger will be official as of October 31st, 2015 when our current insurance lapses. The merger of the two Clubs means that ABC brings over $10,000.00 to BCSF. There are now a total of 70 clubs with 4,213 members. Oasis and Capri Insurance are available for the first year, after which they will probably get quotes. BCSF has an on-line presence and would like all members to apply online. This would involve setting up a Pay-Pal account at a cost of 2%. We will wait at least one year before we start this process. We will also continue to use our own web site for this year. BCSF web site has smart phone access as well as Facebook and Twitter access. The merger has had implications to our membership fees. To cover BCSF higher fees, the Snowmobile Club has had to raise our club rates by $5.00 per person. Note that this is the first fee increase in 5 years and maintains last year s budget. Details of membership costs are on the attached membership application. Clubhouse addition is complete. We have received our Occupancy Permit and received a $200.00 refund against our building permit. The septic field has been passed and the field has been leveled and fenced. Thank you to Art Groves, Peter McKie and Steve Gehl for completing this work. Del Westfall purchased and installed the wheelchair ramp railings. Thank you to Del Westfall and Peter McKie for seeing this project through to the end. The 40th Anniversary spaghetti dinner was held on October 10 with nearly 90 people in attendance. Rita Dixon and Peter McKie presented a slide show documenting the club s history. The wine hut was cleaned up and opened to serve spiced wine before dinner. The club s snowmobiles and groomers were set out on display. Numerous posters of club events were set up on the club walls. A big thanks to Rita Dixon, Kim Lowe, and the many other ladies that helped in sponsoring the event. The Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) registration commences on November 1, 2015. Exact implications will be discussed at upcoming meetings as information becomes available. At this point it looks like snowmobiles will have to be licensed with the ICBC sticker for road crossing and liability insurance. Keep this in mind as you prepare for the upcoming snowmobile season. See https://www.for.gov.bc.ca/mof/orv/ for more details. What kind of winter can we expect? Some theorize the effect of El Nino and others the Blob. Will it be mild, average or wild? Whatever it holds for us, like every year at this time, I look forward to the white stuff.. The plan is to ride from Kamloops to Wells and then back the same route. They are expecting 30 riders for the whole ride and they also anticipate riders and clubs to join in at each leg of the ride. The ride will start in Kamloops January 31, 2016 with the first layover in the 70 Mile Area. We have been on 2 conference calls and have ideas on how to get our club involved. We are thinking of: January 31st - Riding out to Moose or Hammer Lake to meet the riders and lead them through our trail system. January 31st - Hold a pot luck dinner at the Clubhouse for the riders February 1st - Ride with the group to the next Layover at the Hills Health Ranch at the 108 and stay the night. February 2nd - Club Riders return to Green Lake February 7th - Ride Wrap up event in 100 Mile February 8th - GRST ride Returns to Kamloops (Lunch or? for the riders) As this is still in the planning stage, any ideas, questions or concerns would be welcomed. Trail Signage Project Good News: We have acquired funding through Recreational Site and Trails BC to enhance our existing signage. Many thanks to Curtis Ofstie, our District Recreation Officer, and Kurt Williams, our Recreation Technician for the area, to secure this money for the club. We met with Kurt on Sept 10th to discuss our options and develop a strategy to align with the club and came up with a plan. The sign project includes: 55 Directional Blade Signs on most of our major trail intersection consisting of 55 new metal posts and 95 directional signs 44 new Stop signs 20 You Are Here (YAH) Maps installed throughout the trail network 1 Large Kiosk to replace sign boards at the Clubhouse Y.A.H. Map Myself, Art Groves and John Sullivan spent October 7th, 8th and 9 th pounding posts with Kurt. The next step will be installing the YAH maps and directional blades sometime in November. If the opportunity of more funding arises, Kurt has plans to also enhance the signage on the 70 Mile trail which connects to the Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail (GRST). We will be putting together a work party once the signs are ready to go, if you are interested in helping out, please give myself or John a call. Once again thanks to Curtis, Kurt, John and Art for making this happen so quickly. Peter 5

Off Road Vehicle Registration November 1, 2015 it will be mandatory to have all snowmobiles, ATVs, UTVs and motorcycles registered and displaying an Off Road Vehicle License Plate along with proof of liability insurance when operated on forestry roads and crown land. Registration can be completed at any ICBC location. Cost of registration is $30.00 plus $18.00 for the license plate which is a onetime fee. (The NEW regulation allows for the issue of a number decal in place of a metal license plate if so desired.) You can purchase liability for road crossing from ICBC for a cost of $48.00 (evidenced by yearly expiry sticker on plate). This covers you for liability when crossing the road ditch to ditch only, it does not cover you on crown land or forestry roads, for this, you will still require liability from Oasis. September 7-9, 1973 - Shirley and Ernie Hills attended a BC Snow Vehicle Association convention at the Airport Hyatt Hotel in Vancouver. -Shirley and Ed were the owners of the Green Lake Lodge and the Arctic Cat dealers for the area. -when they returned from that meeting, they were all enthusiastic about forming a club! January 1975-26 snowmobile enthusiasts met at the Dunbars on the North Side of the Lake with the idea of forming a club February 3, 1975 - The first general meeting was held at the 70 Mile School - an executive was voted in and committees were established. - a logo of the SnowPokes was chosen. - it was discovered that a club in North Dakota had the same logo but no problems arose. - at a later date, it was noted that the turtle was wearing a scarf which could be seen as a hazard, but after discussion it was okay as it was just a logo. - playdays would be held at the Flying U, Gymkhana grounds, on the Lake, or wherever suit able. Stay tuned for the next installment.rita 7
