Mystery Ride 6/24/17

From your Chapter Educator Advanced ABS, traction control, and even dynamically adjustable suspension are becoming commonplace. And like it or not, it may soon be impossible to buy a new motorcycle without at least some of these electronic rider aids. The question in my mind is are these systems smart enough to decide exactly when and how much to intervene then what happens when they break? Yes they quietly monitor all kinds of data and then intervene only when needed. Now here is the tricky part, knowing these aids exist, will they fool you into a false sense of security? These modern electronics do not make you immune to the consequences of bad decisions, nor do they negate the need for proficient braking and throttle skills. That s because traction control, ABS, and cornering ABS cannot alter basic physics. They will help maintain control under extreme acceleration and braking situations but do not magically create more traction to allow deep lean angles in a sand-covered curve or produce more space to stop when a sports car invades your right of way. To best utilize these systems requires some practice. In my opinion the best way to do this is go to a parking lot and do some hard braking on clean pavement and on light sand to trigger the ABS. Better yet invite some of your friends to join you in these parking lot sessions. The Hurt study tells us that riders need better skills in braking, swerving and cornering. Just because you have ABS and other electronic gizmos does not change that fact. Like I mentioned above these rider aides can make us think we are better than we are. Check with your Chapter Educator for material on various kinds of parking lot exercises and maybe make a day of it and grill some dogs and have ice cold Coke. Until later, Ohio Rides-Join Us on the Journey Robert G & Angela M Williams Ohio Chapter T CE's Rubber City Riders Akron, Ohio
