LUMIERE LONDON KING S CROSS INFORMATION and FAQs ABOUT THE FESTIVAL When is Lumiere? Lumiere London takes place over four evenings on Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 January. The festival is open from 17.30-22.30 each evening. What does it cost? The festival is completely free! At King s Cross there will also be give-aways, prizes and free activities. What is happening at Lumiere King s Cross? There are 11 light installations at King s Cross. Maps and details on the artworks are available at kingscross.co.uk/lumiere and visitlondon.com/lumiere. As well as the installations, you can visit the Night Market, the Luma pop-up bar, or follow the family light trail for activities and prizes. The full Lumiere London programme is available at visitlondon.com/lumiere How long does it take to visit Lumiere King s Cross? There are 11 installations, plus the family trail and food market so think about allowing at least half an evening to enjoy the event. What is the Night Market? The Night Market is situated at Lewis Cubitt. It is suitable for the whole family and is a warming pit stop with covered seating where you can browse food stalls, eat, drink and rest your feet. What is the Luma Bar? The Luma Bar is a pop-up speak-easy serving gin and cocktails. It is situated on Tapper Walk and overlooks Lewis Cubitt Park. It is suitable for over 18s. There will be a challenge 25 policy at the bar. Is the event suitable for families? Yes! We are hosting a family trail. Pick up maps from the Birdcage just outside the station entrance and follow the trail for prizes and free candyfloss and glow sticks! There will be neon face painting at the Residential Marketing Suite and glow band give-aways at the Visitor Centre (both on Stable Street), and fun activities at Everyman on the Corner (Wollstonecraft Street). There are toilets, covered seating areas, kid-friendly food options at the Night Market as well as stalls selling Lumiere goodies.
What prizes can be won? Glowbands and candy floss for those who complete the family trail. We also welcome your views in connection with Coal Drops Yard, the new shopping area in King s Cross that s set to open this autumn. Anyone who fills in the short questionnaire will be eligible to win dinner for two at Caravan. Find out more at Everyman on the Corner on Wollstonecraft Street. Is there anything else to visit at King s Cross? Yes! There are exhibitions at House of Illustration, and Lethaby Gallery. Everyman Cinema is hosting Lumiere-themed complimentary screenings, and Kings Place is nearby. Special offers Many of the shops and restaurants at King s Cross are offering Lumiere specials and activities. Information on the offers is available here. Don t worry if you re not able to take advantage of the offers on the night. Many are running for the whole of January so why not come back and visit after the festival? FACILITIES Toilets Toilets can be found at Lewis Cubitt (the Night Market), Lewis Cubitt Park, and on Handyside Street. There are additional toilets for over 18s at the Luma Bar. The toilets and Lewis Cubitt Park and Lewis Cubitt are disabled-friendly/accessible. Where is the nearest cash point? There are several cash points at the stations and there is a cash machine inside Waitrose at West Handyside Canopy. Wifi Just connect to wifi network King s Cross N1C for unlimited, free wifi. TRANSPORT AND ACCESS QUESTIONS How do I get to King s Cross? King s Cross is very easy to reach. You can travel by tube or train to King s Cross Station, St Pancras Station. There are also 14 bus routes. We recommend that you visit tfl.gov.uk/ lumiere-travel for up-to-date travel information and to plan your journey. Explore your travel options by searching TfL travel Lumiere. Can I come by bike? Due to the large numbers of people expected, we are not recommending that people come by bike. There will be limited space for bike parking, and some roads are closed to bikes. See info below on road closures. Can I travel by taxi? Yes, although some roads will be closed from 16.30-23.30 and this will affect traffic (see info below). York Way and Pancras Road and Euston Road will be open, but expect them to be much busier than usual due to road closures. Can I come by car? Due to the large numbers of visitors expected and road closures, we don t recommend
travelling to the festival by car. Handyside car park will be closed to the public from Thursday 18-Sunday 21 January. See information below on parking for residents and disabled parking. Is there disabled access? The site is accessible, as are all the artworks. There are accessible toilets at Lewis Cubitt Park and Lewis Cubitt. Due to road closures, there will be limited disabled parking. Please call in advance to discuss disabled parking on 02076645720. Changes to pedestrian routes at King s Cross King s Boulevard and Stable Street will become one-way from south to north during festival hours. Bagleys Walk will become one-way east to west. It is best to allow extra time should you need to pass through King s Cross during the festival. Getting around the city during Lumiere London Please remember that large crowds are expected across central London, so plan your journey allowing plenty of time. Peak travel times will be 17:30-20:30. Explore your travel options by searching TfL travel Lumiere. I live in King s Cross, will I be able to get to my home? Yes. Pedestrian access to properties will be available at all times. Barriers will be in place to make accessing the apartment buildings such as Plimsoll, Tapestry and Fenman House easier. Should you need to order a taxi, and live in either the Plimsoll or Tapestry buildings, you will be best to pick it up from the junction of Canal Reach and York Way during festival hours. I m a resident, can I park? Yes. There will be security in position at the north end of Canal Reach during the festival to permit resident access to the Plimsoll Building and the Handyside car park. Please drive carefully, as there will be lots of people about. Anyone living in the other apartment buildings will not be affected by the road closures. I have a booking at a restaurant; will I be able to get to my table? Restaurants will be open and operating as usual. Expect all venues to be busy and allow a little extra time to travel, particularly from the stations. If you have any specific enquiries about your booking, please contact the restaurant. I work at King s Cross, how can I get home? We expect King s Cross area to be busy, so we advise leaving via York Way and Pancras Road. All transport is expected to be busy during peak times from 17.30-20.30pm. ROAD CLOSURES The following roads will be closed to all traffic including bicycles in both directions, from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 January, between 16:30 and 23:30. Please use alternative routes during these times. The map shows King s Cross road closures. Road closures will not affect access for emergency vehicles. Public Transport changes As a result of the road closures, King s Cross station will be busier than usual, and some bus journeys across parts of central London will be diverted or stop short of their destination. OTHER INFORMATION Out-of-hours works One installation at King s Cross requires the use of the crane at Coal Drops Yard. This will be operational during festival hours. Once in position, the crane will not move until it lowers its load at the end of the night. All other installations will be tested on the evening of Wednesday 17th January. Sound Two installations at King s Cross will feature sound or music, including specially commissioned soundtracks. Artichoke is working with the local authority to monitor noise levels and artworks will be switched off by 22:45 each evening. The festival finishes at 22:30.
