Dear alumnae, alumni, parents and friends: Step into a land of contrasts, where glittering glaciers cap simmering volcanoes, ancient Viking ruins exist alongside the latest in geothermal technology and night and day meld under the midnight sun. This is Iceland, a rugged, beautiful and everchanging landscape that serves as a testament to the powerful forces that shape our planet. From towering fjords to spouting geysers and obsidian lava fields, see unimaginable scenery that exists nowhere else on Earth. Learn more about the first Norse settlers and their distinct traditions, great medieval sagas and supernatural beliefs in the huldufólk ( hidden people or elves) and the mystical power places in nature echoes from the past that are still relevant in modern Icelandic culture. U.S. Friday, July 20 Depart from the U.S. Reykjavik, Iceland Saturday, July 21 This morning, arrive in Reykjavik, the world s northernmost capital. More than one-half of the country s total population of 300,000 lives in or near the city. Transfer to the centrally located HOTEL BORG for breakfast. The afternoon is at leisure before the transfer to the M.S. LE BORÉAL. Grundarfjördur Sunday, July 22 Cruise into the majestic fjord that borders Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a captivating landscape of lava caves, waterfalls, mineral hot springs, lush foliage and glacier-tipped mountains. The peninsula s unique natural formations were sculpted throughout the island s active geologic history. From the picturesque town of Grundarfjördur, visit nearby Snæfellsjökull, a gleaming glacier formed on top of a dormant volcano, showcasing the island s magnificent extremes of fire and ice. Explore views that inspired centuries of poets and writers, including Jules Verne, who chose this glacier as his doorway to inner space in his novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. In Arnarstapi and the small fishing village of Budir, see the natural phenomenon of black lava rock and yellow sand coalesced into extraordinary formations on the beach. Attend the Captain s welcome reception and dinner tonight. Grimsey Island/ Arctic Circle Monday, July 23 Bisected by the Arctic Circle, Grimsey Island is the northernmost inhabited territory in Iceland. Visit quaint Grimsey Church, built out of driftwood in 1867. Then, officially cross into the Arctic Circle, the top of the world, where the island is treeless but lush with grasses and mosses. Despite its remote Arctic latitude, its weather is mild year round. You will see thriving populations of seabirds, especially auks. Their black and white coloring is similar to a penguin s, but auks have the distinct ability to fly above and dive into the Arctic waters. Akureyri Tuesday, July 24 Rise early for the unforgettable approach to Akureyri, a charming fishing port nestled beneath the mountains of Eyjafjördur, one of Iceland s longest fjords. Cross the fjord to Godafoss, Waterfall of the Gods. According to legend, this spectacular waterfall earned its name when an Icelandic chieftain threw wooden statues of his Norse gods into its crashing waters, signifying his conversion to Christianity. Continue to cerulean Lake Mývatn, a haven for Iceland s bountiful wild ducks. Look for the sleek harlequin duck and the black-and-white Barrow s goldeneye, a species that nests nowhere else. Walk among the surreal lava formations of Dimmuborgir, the rocky basin of a former lava lake, and stop at Namaskard, a steaming field of boiling, sulfurous mud pots. The afternoon is at leisure in Akureyri, where you can explore the extensive collection of Icelandic flora in the Botanical Gardens. Photo this page: Discover the sheer power and beauty of nature in Iceland, where cascading waterfalls and ethereal rainbows surround you in mystical splendor. Cover photo: While the cause of their eruptions is unknown, geysers amid Iceland s vast lava fields can shoot scalding water and steam hundreds of feet into the air.

See the ruggedly stunning mountains of the Djup, the dominant fjord of this extreme region. Stop at the open-air museum of Osvor to see a restored 19th-century fishing outfit traditional fisherman s huts and fishing equipment that depict a vivid picture of the lives of generations of coastal Icelanders. Then tour Isafjördur s West Fjords Maritime Museum for insight into the climatic and geographical challenges faced by residents of this remote outpost. Heimaey Island Thursday, July 26 Arrive at fascinating Heimaey Island, the tall cliffs of which are inhabited by puffin, fulmar and guillemot bird species. The island experienced a volcanic eruption in 1973, causing the formation of Mount Eldfell ( Fire Mountain ). See the lava fields which are still warm to the touch almost 40 years later. Stop at the precipitous headland of Storhofdi to observe Heimaey s largest puffin colony and to take in magnificent views of the glaciers on the mainland. This evening, cruise around Surtsey Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Created during volcanic eruptions between 1963 and 1968, it is the youngest island in the world and one of the most fragile; scientists are carefully monitoring the evolution of its flora and fauna. Reykjavik Friday, July 27 Today, visit the Golden Circle, three of South Iceland s most renowned landmarks. Thingvellir National Park is the assembly plain. Here, in A.D. 930, settlers founded the legislative and judiciary hub of their Icelandic Commonwealth, arguably the world s oldest parliament. Stroll through the dramatic rift valley Thingvellir National Park s breathtaking and historic plains are home to the largest natural lake and longest spring

Watch for puffins nesting in crevices along Iceland s rocky shoreline. Listen to the cacophonous din and feel the sheer force of Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, where crystal clear glacial waters drop 96 feet, appearing to vanish magically into the earth. Visit the valley of Hankadher, famous for its geothermal waterspouts, including Geysir and Strokkur, a geyser that erupts approximately every five minutes. Stop at the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant to learn more about harnessing this natural resource d river in the country. to provide low-cost heat and hot water. Later, enjoy the Captain s farewell reception. Reykjavik/U.S. Saturday, July 28 Disembark and transfer to the airport for your return flight to the U.S. Reykjavik Pre-Cruise Option The Reykjavik area coastline is characterized by rugged peninsulas, coves, straits and islands, but the world s northernmost capital of a sovereign state, said to have been established around A.D. 870, is a technologically advanced center that dominates the culture, economy, government, finances and industry of the country. Perched along the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, Reykjavik is the perfect one-night introduction to Iceland. Enjoy excursions, including the Blue Lagoon, with time to rejuvenate in its famous geothermal seawater. Accommodations are in the four-star HOTEL BORG. The Pre-Cruise Option is available at additional cost, and details will be provided with your reservation confirmation. Reykjavik s tree-lined streets and spacious city squares are a great contrast to the dramatic backdrop of the island s rugged landscape.

Spectacular blue-white glaciers from the Langjökull ice cap drift down to Iceland s lower-lying regions. Land of Fire and Ice Iceland is a land of unparalleled geological riches and home to some of the most diverse phenomena on Earth 4,500 square miles of glaciers, 15 active volcanoes, 10,000 waterfalls, 800 hot springs. Born by the monumental forces unleashed in the movement of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and at the same time carved out by majestic, slow-moving glaciers, the land is a combination of intense energy and total calm. The country of Iceland as we know it continues to take shape, yet parts have hardly changed since the first Viking settlers saw it more than 1,100 years ago. Iceland s landscape is infectious. Walk around one corner and look out over volcanic craters and fissures. Turn the next, and bubbling hot springs send steam into the air against a backdrop of sand fields, snow-capped mountains and black lava desert. Keep walking, and you will come upon the deep freeze powerful waterfalls and mammoth icecaps so pristine that they reflect the clear ice-blue of the crystal sky above. Along the coast, Iceland s characteristic fjords, the deep inlets cut into the coastline, chronicle the pathways of its glaciers. All of these natural wonders are in constant flux, as calving glaciers melt and shift and new mountains emerge from the volcanos lava flows. The result is a startlingly beautiful portrait of Earth in process raw, primordial landscape hewn by the forces of fire and ice.
