Those joining the caravan were: Tom and Ruth Hughes, Bill and Sue Kreglow, Chuck and Debi Freeland, Glynn and Diane Kerr, Bob and Natalie Olson, Raul Rodriguez and Steve Veirs. Joining us at the restaurant were Pat and Linda von Merveldt and Steve and Cela Whitney. We left at 11:00 am and drove the east side of the Sacramento River past vineyards, pear orchards, Victorian homes and of course following the delta waterway. We passed through the towns of Freeport, Hood, Courtland, Locke and Walnut Grove to get to Giusti s on the levee overlooking a small marina. Giusti s was founded over 100 years ago and was the first restaurant in the Delta. It is now run by the third and fourth generations of the family. One would have to say that it is eclectic for sure, perhaps downright funky. A few things are in need of repair, but a sign on the window noted the kitchen had passed the county health inspection. Entering the restaurant through the bar, one notices the ceiling covered with hundreds of baseball caps, not only representing sports teams but a variety of businesses as well. No one really knows how many are up there including the owner, but the bartender was able to give us his best guess of 853. Bob Olson leading the caravan, entered the property via a 2 lane road. P a g e 2 P a g e 3 Page 2 Jag Wyre Most members thought Bob had taken a wrong turn and was looking for a spot to turn around. Not so-- we entered Giusti s property via the back parking lot. The ride took about 30 minutes and we were right on time when the restaurant opened at 11:30 am. Upon entering, we were shown to our tables where Valentine table decorations were set. Our lunch included complimentary wine, baskets of bread and minestrone soup followed by our individual menu choices. Menu boards were tacked on the wall with the lunch selections. Lots of conversation and laughter accompanied the meal while Bill Kreglow took pictures of the lunch guests. Below: Glynn & Diane Kerr Glynn Kerr was the winner of the contest How Many Hats on the Ceiling. He came within 11 of the 853 count, and walked off with the prize--cupid s Blend coffee. After the meal, happy and well fed, we headed back home. Amazingly, not a drop of rain fell from those very dark clouds. Text by Natalie Olson; Pictures by Bill Kreglow SPECIAL BIRTHDAY PARTY Doris Lockness with Natalie Olson, Sylvia Jackson, Judy Dunow, Diane Kerr, Susan Starch, Linda Banta and Vivian Collipriest: Picture supplied by Judy Dunow Doris Lockness was of course the guest of honor at her 102 nd birthday when ladies got together at Sienna Grill in El Dorado Hills on Saturday, Feb. 4. Vivian Collipriest was the charioteer who delivered Doris to the site where Judy Dunow, Susan Starch, Diane Kerr, Linda Banta, Sylvia Jackson, and Natalie Olson met to join in the celebration. After a delicious lunch Doris was presented with several token gifts before the Sienna staff brought in a plate of various cheesecake slices topped by three candles spelling out 102. Doris very obviously enjoyed the company as well as the attention of the staff and made us all promise that we would be there for her 105 th birthday also. We have no doubt that will happen as Doris kept the candles with the statement that she ll just replace the 2 with a 5. YOU GO GIRL! Linda Banta
V o l u m e 5, I s s u e 3 P a g e 3 SACRAMENTO JAGUAR CLUB MINUTES February 16, 2012, Sheepherders Bar & Grill, Rancho Cordova In attendance: Andy & Linda Banta, Steve & Joellen Veirs, Natalie Olson, Judy Dunow, Ritt Rittenhouse, Richard & Susan Starch and Tom & Ruth Hughes. Linda called the meeting to order at 6:45 and introductions were made and fines collected for supporting the Sacramento Zoo jaguar. Secretary s report from January is available for review in the last issue of the Jag Wyre. Treasurer, Steve Veirs, reported a healthy balance in our treasury. The annual dues were paid to JCNA. The recent audit of our books for 2011 done by Bob Olson, Bill Kreglow and Ritt Rittenhouse and everything was found to be in order. A note was sent to Marsha Bentley, treasurer for 2011, letting her know these results. Linda raised the possibility of opening a saving s account to divert some of our treasury money. After a brief discussion it was decided there would be no advantage to doing that since interest rates are so low. Fees could also apply for withdrawals from such an account. Linda reminded Steve that the annual dues to the California Auto Museum are due. She also suggested we set aside some money as operating expenses for the upcoming concours. The amount will be determined after checking with the past concours and making adjustments for inflation. Ritt raised the question of just how our club income is generated. For the most part it is from member dues and the occasional raffle but in recent years has been supplemented by donations generated by the project cars. Project car: Richard Starch gave a report on the latest project car. It is a 1988 XJS C which had a minor engine fire. After a few hitches the car was brought to the garage in Loomis and work has begun to restore it. Andy reported that Jaguar of Sacramento has requested 10 copies per month of printed copies of the Jaguar Wyre to have on hand at the agency. These are expensive to print but it is felt that they are an important part of getting attention to our club and activities. Andy has been working on compiling an account of the recent XK150 restoration project. It will soon be available for purchase for approximately $20. It is also possible to be put on a CD. Andy continues to have back issues of various Jaguar publications for sale. Let him know him if you are interested. JCNA : Bruce Dunow, Raul Rodriguez and Richard Starch will be attending the AGM which will be held in Phoeniz AZ next month. One important issue on the agenda is the proposed increase in dues. It was suggested that once the exact amount of increase is determined, an increase in our dues will be considered but further discussion on that was tabled until after the AGM. Andy is interested in obtaining some kind of accounting of what happens to our dues money. Richard reported that a budget report is available through the JCNA website. (Continued on page 4)
P a g e 4 J a g W y r e Concours: Since the Folsom venue was not available, Richard has contacted Thunder Valley Casino located off Hwy 65, between Roseville and Lincoln as a possible venue for the show. The event planner there was very receptive to the idea, The casino and surrounding areas would provide everything we need for this event easy access, plenty of display options, good public exposure, food and lodging nearby, entertainment, meeting rooms, etc. Richard will be turning to Jaguar of Sacramento for support in the way of display cars, advertisement, etc. Richard is looking for members who are willing to solicit corporate sponsorship and donations for various aspects of this event. Other volunteer positions are also open. Contact Richard to let him know in which areas you are best able to provide help. Andy has offered to be the head judge and there are several others who will participate in judges training next month. The first session conducted by Jerry Nuijen held will be on March 3, at Mimi s Cafe off Truxel Road in Sacramento. The final certification session led by a member of the Reno Jag Club will be held March 24 at a location yet to be determined. Activities: Natalie reported that 16 members and guests participated in the very enjoyable Delta drive to Guisti s Place for lunch on February 11.. On March 24 the Olson s are planning a drive to the Corning area with olive oil tasting and a visit to the New Clareveau Winery. (Note: date changed to the 31 st to avoid conflict with judges training) The April meeting will be held on Saturday, the 21 st, at the Kerr residence in Loomis following a drive around Folsom Lake. May will be the drive to Clear Lake, including a picnic lunch, wine tasting, dinner and overnight stay in the Upper Lake area planned by Mike and Ruth Hunter. In June the Whitneys are planning a drive and wine tour in the Napa/Sonoma area. Membership: Natalie reported from Bob that we have 35 paid memberships at this point. He will be contacting those who have not yet renewed with reminders. Notes: Susan read a letter she received from Sacramento Shriners Hospital thanking us for the donation of toys collected at the Christmas Brunch. Natalie read a note from Doris Lockness thanking the Jaguar ladies for her recent 102 nd birthday lunch. The next meeting will be held March 15 th, at Sienna Restaurant, in El Dorado Hills. P a g e 5 P a g e 3 V o l u m e 5, I s s u e 3 Page 5 SACRAMENTO JAGUAR CLUB SPECIAL BOARD MEETING Monday, February 27,2012 Banta s residence President, Linda Banta, called a special meeting of the board of directors to discuss and select a venue for the September 23 concours we are planning. Present were board members Linda & Andy Banta, Bob & Natalie Olson, Jim Collipriest, Bruce & Judy Dunow, Steve Veirs, and concours chairman Richard and Susan Starch. Two venues for consideration were presented - Thunder Valley Casino near Lincoln and Sierra College Campus in Rocklin. After extensive discussion and weighing of the pros and cons of each location a motion was made by Steve Veirs and seconded by Natalie Olson to go with Thunder Valley Casino. A limit of $1000 in expenses was decided, most of which would be covered by entry fees and possibly sponsorships or donations. It passed by a unanimous vote. It was felt that this site would provide everything needed to put on a first class show including ample display and parking areas, lodging and food and refreshments available on site, trailer parking if necessary, security, easy access and plenty of public exposure. It is also possible there will be music or entertainment provided. The plan is to provide a hospitality area and a welcome reception the evening prior to the concours with no host bar and hors d oeuvres provided by the club. Linda also read a note she received from Maranello s Restaurant, located at Hazel & Sunset Avenues in Fair Oaks, informing us of their plans to hold informal car shows in their parking lot. The first one will feature British cars and will be held March 14 beginning at 5 PM. They invited our members to bring our cars and join in this event. Natalie reminded us about the March 31, olive oil/wine tasting event and also announced that June 16, has been set for the tour of Buena Vista Winery. Respectfully submitted, Judy Dunow, secretary
P a g e 6 I ve been perusing the latest Jaguar Journal and am stuck by several features. First is how much press the eastern clubs get and how little the western/ southern clubs rate. Part of this I realize is due to how much we as clubs submit about what we are doing. I believe SJC has a big shout out coming from the project cars we have done. No other group seems to attempt such ambitious projects, say nothing of accomplishing them to such a fine degree. We need to toot our own horns louder! PRESIDENTS S MUSINGS Jag Wyre Another item that caught my attention was the reinstitution of the Fred Horner Sportman Award. This was originated many years ago ( I m told I wasn t there to know in person) to recognize accomplishments other than points earned in competitions. The resurrection of this award is based on participation in events. One that struck me was Sanctioned Drives. It needs to have 10 or more vehicles, including at least 6 Jaguars, travel 50+ miles, be publicized locally, have JCNA Sanctioning (i.e., posted on JCNA calendar). We frequently do all of these with the exception of notifying JCNA. There are currently 6 possible events scheduled this year which could meet these specs. Points are P a g e 6 awarded for participation, 1/ Jaguar car used. In this type event, SJC & members might very well shine brightly. More than one way to skin a Jaguar cat! Linda Banta, President The latest edition of Hemming s Sports & Exotic Car has a couple articles of interest to Jaguar aficionados. First, this being the 100 th anniversary of double overhead cam DOHC--engines in automobiles, there is a history. Apparently credit for the idea goes to an early 20 th century engine designer named Ernest Henry. Peugeot built what appears to be a race car in 1912 using DOHC engine. Sunbeam built a straight six DOHC engine in the mid twenties which is probably the first time it was used in a production car. Amonima Lombarda Fabrbrica Automobilli, now know as Alfa Romeo, built a straight eight version in the early 1930s; it is unclear if it actually went into a production car. As many of us know, Jaguar introduced their DOHC six in the XK 120 in 1948. While not being first, it certainly was the most long lived. In various revisions it powered the XK 120, 140 and 150, both Mark series of the 1950s and 60s, the E-types and the XJ6 on into the 80s.. Along EDITOR S RAMBLINGS the way it powered some Le Mans and other competition winners. The final use by Jaguar was powering the Daimler DS240 limousine until 1992. I don t find any estimate of the total number built but looking at the production figures for the cars it powered it must have been over 100,000. The second article of interest talks about the SS90, the fore runner of the SS100. According to this article the SS90 is the rarest of Jaguar production cars. Referencing Jaguar the Complete History, 24 were built between March 22 nd and May 1935. Like the 120 in XK120, the 90 was an indication of the top speed (86 MPH according to the Sports and Exotic Car s article). The engine powering these 2128 pound cars was a 2.7 litre L head inline 6 developing 68 HP at 3800 RPM. The 0 to 60 time is about 17 seconds; just slightly better than a VW diesel Rabbit! Finally, the article estimates the present value of one of these cars between $300K and $900K depending on condition. Lastly, with help from Jim Collipriest, I have assembled his monthly progress reports on the XK150 into a 40 page color booklet which will be available by April 1st for about $20 a copy. V o l u m e 5, I s s u e 3 2 Page 9 THE JAGUAR RECOVERY TEAM REPORT The Phoenix revisited, The start of Project VI. Thinking back, I was surprised to realize that it had been five years since I resurrected my 1989 XJ-S coupe after the dreaded V-12 engine fire. In that time I have accumulated an additional 17,373 pleasure filled miles of fun driving. Never thought I d do it again but here we go. Our newest Project VI is a 1987 XJ-SC (Cabriolet) and it is also an engine fire car. The minor engine fire turned out to be a significant burn. The nice interior neglected the fact that vandals had stolen the door speakers, destroying the door panels in the process. Arriving in Goshen to trailer the project, we were greeted with a flat right rear tire. It had been flat for so long the sidewall had ruptured. After mounting the intact original spare, when attempting to move the Jaguar, the left front wheel fell off. Seems the speaker thieves thought they could steal the wheel and tire and had taken the lug nuts off. With the tire remounted, the project was finally loaded and trailered to Loomis.
