My First Trip to York by David Mabee TCA 05 58696 TTOS 19949 My L.A. area car pool buddy, Mr. Harvey Tafel, mentioned to me in February I should consider going to York in April since he would be there to offer any guidance I might need. The more I thought about going to York I said, Why not. I contacted Harvey about where he was staying and since I have relatives near the Philadelphia Airport I could visit them also. My East Coast prewar train connection, Mr. Harry Sallade, lives right next to the airport. I met Harry about five years ago when buying one of his advertised prewar trains thru the TCA sale book. Soon I asked him if he would be interested in going on train treasure hunts for me and fortunately he said yes. Then 2 or 3 times a month I would receive Xmas bonus packages (my wife thinks it s 5 or 6 times a month). I arrived in Philadelphia Saturday morning, April 15. Harry had told me about a train store in Boothwyn, PA. called E & T Trains which is only open Friday and Saturday. I had my (continued on page 2) p1 In Memory Butch Alvarado My first Trip to York p2 Gary Keck Illness Arlene Berns Appointed p3 May 2012 Meet p4-5 June 2012 Meet p6 Volunteer for C-S Train Races, etc C-S p7 Picnic p8 Meet Dates & Table Sales By the Numbers 0 Dues Are Due! My First Trip To York (cont d from page 1) cousin take me Saturday afternoon to E & T Trains. I met Ed Dougherty and his partner, Therese Orlando. When Ed found I was interested in prewar 0 gauge he invited me over to his relative s house to see his train collection over a 6 car garage area which had trains in display cabinets, on the walls. etc, etc. Ed also collects pinball machine games. When I had seen his train collections, I asked is there anymore and he said he had boxes of trains on top of the pinball machines that he hadn t found a place for yet. I was lucky and found an excellent City of Denver which he agreed to sell me with the 225 and 2225W I saw at his store. Monday I met my friend Harry at his house and saw his all original 0 gauge prewar layout. Tuesday Harvey arrived. I met him at Hertz Rent A Car and my tour of the beautiful Pennsylvania Country side began on the way to York. Wednesday morning Harvey took me to the Holiday Inn indoor and parking lot sale where I purchased a Gray 4U. In the afternoon he took me to the TCA Museum in Strasburg and The Choo Choo train barn layout. Thursday at noon York opened and we were at the door of the Red Hall and eventually went to the White Hall. Friday at 9 A.M. we were at the front of the Blue Hall, then went to the Silver Hall and in late afternoon to the Orange Hall. Saturday morning we returned to all five halls for a review of possible train purchases. My other purchases at the train Halls were: 1. Rail chief cars to go with the 700E I bought in November in Torrance. 2. 605 605 606 gray cars with the green stripe to go with my 4U. 3. Numerous miscellaneous prewar freight cars. Thanks again to Harvey for being an excellent tour guide during my unforgetful train adventure. Gary Keck Illness Reported Gary Keck, a past president of both Southwestern Division and TTOS National, is hospitalized and undergoing chemotherapy for bone cancer with involvement of the lymph system. Please keep Gary, wife Janita, and family in your thoughts and prayers as he undergoes treatment. Cards and notes sent to his home or The Train Shack would be appreciated. Note from Editor Calvin Smith: My wife Phyllis and I were guests at the Huntington Library for a private tour of Visions of Empire: The Quest for a Railroad Across America 1840-1880 given by Peter J. Blodgett, Ph.D., exhibit curator. We especially enjoyed viewing maps showing the expansion of the United States and the many private railroads in the eastern states and the stereo black and white photos preserved from that era. Letters and newspaper articles from this era supply interesting details. All items were beautifully displayed with great care.
