The campfire 5 The campfire It was a beautiful summer night. The four high school friends set up their tents away from the other students. They were very good friends. They wanted to be together. They wanted to stay up and talk all night. Let s build a fire here, Dorothy said. Ben, Lesley, and Bill agreed. It took them about thirty minutes to build the fire. The night soon arrived. Did you remember the matches? Bill asked. Of course! Dorothy said. Wait. I can t see a thing. Oh, here they are. Bill, can you light the fire? Bill passed the matchbox to Ben. You do it! he said to Ben. Are you afraid or something? Ben

6 Campfire Ghost Stories smiled at Bill. No, I just don t like lighting matches! Bill said. How strange! the girls said together. Ben lit the fire, and soon it was an orange, yellow, and red color. The students could see each other s faces again. They sat by the fire. The evening was cool, but the fire was warm. Lesley said, Is anyone hungry? She passed around some food. The food was good. The students ate and told stories about their school life. It was getting late. I know, Dorothy said. Let s tell each other scary stories! We can take turns. Great idea! Ben and Lesley smiled. Do we have to? Bill said. Yes, it will be fun! Ben said. He looked at Bill. His face was scary. Ben said the word Fun! again and again.

The campfire 7 He said, Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun! in a scary voice. Stop it, Ben! said Bill. He stood up and walked away. Come back, Bill. It will be okay. You are with good friends. Eat some more food, Lesley said. She brought Bill back to the fire, and he sat down again. Yes, don t worry, Dorothy said. Our stories are not so scary! She smiled and waited. Or are they? She made a scary face. Bill said, Okay. Okay. You are very scary, Dorothy. I get it. Tell me your story, then. Are you ready, Bill? she said. Are you ready, Lesley and Ben? Yes, they all said. Please start! But there is no need to hurry. It is not yet twelve o clock. Dorothy stood up.

8 Campfire Ghost Stories She began her scary story. Dorothy s story The driver and the hitchhiker One day, a man was driving down the road. Let s call him Andy. Andy was visiting his sister. His sister was sick, and he wanted to look after her. His sister lived far away. It would take a long time to get to his sister s house, so he decided to drive through the night. The road was not busy at all. His car was the only car on the road. Also, that night there was a storm and strong rain. It was difficult to see the road, so Andy was driving slowly. Wow! I m happy it s not raining tonight, Bill said. I don t like storms! Dorothy put her finger to her mouth.

Dorothy s story The driver and the hitchhiker 9 Be quiet, Bill. Listen to the story, she said. Sorry! Bill said. I just don t like storms! Where was I? Dorothy asked. A man was driving down the road. He was going to visit his sister, Lesley said. It was raining hard, Ben said. Okay. I remember, Dorothy said. It was raining very hard. And it was late at night. Andy, the driver, was getting sleepy. But he had a long way to drive. He opened his window a little. The night air was cold. It helped him. He did not want to fall asleep, but soon he got sleepy again. Suddenly, he saw a young woman by the road. She was wearing a red baseball cap. She was holding a sign that said Home! He didn t usually pick up hitchhikers, and it was late. But talking to the

10 Campfire Ghost Stories woman would help him. Talking would be fun. He would not feel sleepy. So he stopped the car. Where are you going to? he asked the woman. I m going home to my mother, she said. Well, it s cold and rainy. Why don t you get in the car? I ll take you, Andy said. Thank you, the woman smiled. She got in the front seat next to Andy. She took off her coat and red baseball cap. She said, Hi! My name s Kate. Andy smiled and said, Nice to meet you, I m Andy. So, where does your mother live? Kate said, Down the road. Andy asked, Where? Kate said, Just down the road.
