Delaware & Ottawa Counties Page 3 Signage General Information 69 Alt., 69, 59 and 69, and 60 and 69 are the designations for Route 66 from Kansas to the Delaware County border. In Miami, if you are westbound, take care that you don t turn off Main when you see a South 69 shield. This route bypasses the nicely spruced-up downtown, and you ll miss the Coleman Theatre Beautiful. Continue south on Main until you reach the major intersection that indicates State Highway 10/Steve Owens Blvd. Either turn right (west) here to take the newer way out of town, or go straight to access the 9-foot road. (See separate directions.) Street names of Route 66 in towns (east to west) Quapaw: 69 Alt. Main 69 Alt. Commerce: 69 Mickey Mantle Blvd. 69 (or 69 Commerce St. Main St. 69 for older alignment) Miami: 69 Main Third Ave. SW/Steve Owens Blvd./SH 10 69 Afton: 60/69 South First 60/69 Road Facts Ottawa County has a unique stretch of historic highway. The 9-foot-wide stretch that connected Afton and Miami through a series of zigzags that followed the section lines has been known by various nicknames, including the Scotch Highway, Ribbon Road and Sidewalk Highway. The road is rough, but the editor has driven it in a Honda Insight one of the lowest-slung cars on the road so a careful driver should be able to handle it. Drive slowly, as the road is narrow (you ll have to drive on the shoulder if you meet another vehicle), and dirt and gravel periodically are spread across the road surface. If you look carefully, you will see white curbs on either side of the road. Directions for driving the 9-foot segments: Miami segment: Westbound: At the Steve Owens and Main intersection in Miami, stay on Main Street. This eventually will turn into E. Street SW and 125. One-half mile before you reach a T intersection, new asphalt begins. Turn right at the T. After another half-mile of new pavement, the 9-foot roadbed begins to come into view. Eastbound: One mile north of Narcissa (a half-mile after the blue cylindrical water tower), turn right. This road is marked E 140 Rd. on the other side of the highway. Page 4 Delaware & Ottawa Counties QUAPAW Quapaw is named for the Quapaw Indians, who were removed from Arkansas to Oklahoma, then known as Indian Territory. The name is derived from Ugakhpa, a tribal term for downstream people. About 100 years ago, the town became a part of the Tri-State Mining Area. The northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas, and the southwest corner of Missouri were huge producers of lead and zinc. In 1926, the year Route 66 was officially established, peak production was reached as 423,000 tons of recoverable zinc and 912,117 tons of lead were produced. The ore was valued at over $55,000,000. For more information about Quapaw, call City Hall at (918) 674-2525. Things to do and see Colorful murals on sides of buildings, starting to fade. Spooklight on Devil s Promenade Road on the old Quapaw Indian Reservation (almost to the Missouri border). The Spooklight is a mysterious light that has yet to be explained scientifically. COMMERCE Ever wonder how legendary baseball player Mickey Mantle got the nickname The Commerce Comet? It s because he grew up in Commerce. Note that Route 66 through town is called Mickey Mantle Boulevard in his honor. The Mickey Mantle Museum, where Midway Golf used to be, is under construction. Commerce, like Quapaw and Miami, was a mining town. Mickey s dad worked for one of the mines. The Turkey Fat Mine actually operated inside the city limits. Mining inside city limits seems to have happened more than once in Oklahoma. Oklahoma City, during its early oil gusher days, had derricks in people s backyards. Even the Capitol had (and still has) oil rigs on its land. Commerce erected its own Historic 66 markers to indicate to visitors that the original alignment of 66 went through the downtown business district. * Commerce City Hall, (918) 675-4373, has more information about the community. Lykins was the son of a missionary to the Peoria Indians. He wanted to be a cattle rancher, so he came to Indian Territory, where there would be plenty of grazing land. Continuing to follow his dream, he went to Washington, D.C., got the town site of Miami approved, and on March 2, 1891, Miami became the first chartered town in Indian Territory. Nine Native American tribes are located in the area: Miami, Modoc, Ottawa, Peoria, Seneca-Cayuga, Wyandotte, Quapaw, Eastern Shawnee and Loyal Shawnee.
