Updated Newsletter 01/21/2019 February, 2019 Flatirons Ski Club An Outdoor Multi Sports & Social Group www.flatirons SkiClub.com FSC Ski Club General Meeting Thursday, Febuary 7th at 7pm General Meetings are held @ the Unitarian Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Ave, Boulder, CO 80303 Presentation at the February General Meeting will be given by Ed Hansen. Ed and his wife, Gay, are currently traveling on an Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) trip titled Antarctica s White Wilderness Small Ship Adventure. Since they will return shortly before the February meeting, this is written before they have left, and it s hard to say what the highlight will be, but information will be very current :-). They will travel in Argentina to Buenos Aires; Bariloche, for the Patagonian Andes and Lakes; and Ushuaia where they will board the Ocean Diamond, operated by Grand Circle Cruise Line, for a trip across the Drake Passage to visit the Antarctic Peninsula Region and South Shetland Islands. On their return they will visit Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina and Brazil. Message from the President: Hello, all! I trust you are enjoying your winter and the holidays. We have several members new to the club and I wish to extend a warm welcome to those folks. If you encounter an unfamiliar face at the General Meetings, please approach that person and initiate a conversation to make them welcome. If you are a new member signed up for a trip and are not sure with whom to carpool, please contact the trip leader for suggestions. If you are on a wait list for upcoming trips throughout the winter, there is a high likelihood that you can get on the trip. Try to keep the trip dates open on your calendar and stay in contact with the trip leader as regards potential openings. Thanks to all who came to the Christmas Party and who helped to make it such a warm and lively event! Warm regards from your Prez, Donna Scott FSC Book Club - February 2019 Book: On Trails: An Exploration by Robert Moor Date: February 11th at 6:45 pm Where: Jim Dimmick s 4882 Kings Ridge Blvd, Boulder. Discussion Leader: Jim Dimmick On Trails is a wondrous exploration of how trails help us understand the world from invisible ant trails to hiking paths that span continents, from interstate highways to the Internet. While thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Robert Moor began to wonder about the paths that lie beneath our feet: How do they form? Why do some improve over time while others fade? What makes us follow or strike off on our own? Over the course of seven years, Moor traveled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds, from the miniscule to the massive. He learned the tricks of master trail-builders, hunted down long-lost Cherokee trails, and traced the origins of our road networks and the Internet. In each chapter, Moor interweaves his adventures with findings from science, history, philosophy, and nature writing.
