Cairo The Greater Cairo Region is the premier city in Egypt. It is rich in history and boasts a large number of historical structures. It is the largest city in the African Continent and the Middle East region (214 Km 2 ) with a population of over 20 million, representing 25% of the total population of Egypt. As the population of Greater Cairo Region is envisaged to increase to 25 million by the year 2022, road traffic congestion with air pollution, lost a lot of works hours as well as urban problems are expected to worsen Greater Cairo Giza Gov. National Authority For Tunnels NAT was established in 1983 as one of the Authorities belonging to the Ministry of Transport Its role is : * Performing the technical studies of tunnels & underground projects. * Construction of tunnels & underground projects. * Handing over the projects to the concerned authorities for operation. El Azhar Road Tunnels ELAzhar road Tunnels project is one of the components of the enhancement Project for Islamic Cairo zone and its development from the tourism point of view as this zone is considered one of the important touristic districts which includes great collection of important monuments in the Egyptian Islamic history. The project consists of two adjacent Road Tunnels to connect Salah Salem street with EL Opera Square with a total length of (2.65( km for each of them. Each tunnel that consists of two traffic lanes is allocated for one traffic direction. NO. of cars crossing the tunnel = 65000 Cars/day The project was inaugurated in October 2001 and NAT carried out the management, operation and maintenance of the project till its final taking over on 31/12/2008 then it had been delivered to Cairo Governorate.

The feasibility studies and preparation of tender documents The Spanish government has provided a grant of 850 thousand Euros for the preparation of feasibility studies and tender documents for the construction of tunnels under the Suez Canal Port Said. the Spanish Consultations office will finish the detailed of the design documents on the first week of September 2014 we work on providing (4) TBM ( we have 2 offers ( technical / financial ) from Germany and France Evaluate 12 international Consultant office to choose the most suitable one to work as a consultant for the project implementation. Coordination between the Arab Contractors Company and Orascom to start the implementation work.

El Fayrouz tunnels at Ismailia governorate It is Planning to Implement (3) tunnels (2 cars +1 Railway) Chinese-based company estimated the initial costs of the project at $ 800 million dollars. 15.5 Km Port said Cars Tunnels 24 Km Port said Railway Tuuel Ismailia government proposed to implement the tunnels at Km 65 while Suez Canal Authority proposed the location at Km 71.80 while National Authority for Tunnels proposed the location at Km 80 and for the following reasons: - Mediate the distance between Port Said tunnels and Ahmed Hamdy tunnel and ease of connectivity with the rest regions of the republic and the lack of access to the city of Ismailia. the Tightness of Ahmed Hamdy tunnel and its inability to withstand heavy traffic to South Sinai and the Red Sea coast. Suez Canal Univ Proposal 65 Km Suez Canal Authority Proposal 71.8 Km NAT Proposal 80 Km there are more than crossing point to Sinai in the northern part of Ismailia city, so it better for tunnels to be in the southern part of the city. The Chinese government is currently through one of its company to prepare the initial feasibility study and determined based upon the adoption a grant of $ 2.5 million for the completion of detailed studies and tender documents by the end of August. Greater Cairo Metro - Line 5 The Fifth Line of the Greater Cairo Metro "Nasr City - Heliopolis El Sawah- Rod El-Farag" This Line starts at El Wfaa Wel amal in Nasr City, to Dr. Hassan El- Sharif Street at the Eighth suburb in Nasr City and crossing under Mostafa El Nahas St., then Hassan Maamoun St., reaching El Ahly Club at Nasr City and then down through El Nasr Road until it intersects with El-Nozha St. and continues underneeth it to intersect with Line 3 at Haroun Station then continues under Abu Bakr El Sedeek St. in Heliopolis and continues to intersect with Line1 at Helmeyet El zeitoun Station and continues until El Sawah Square, then crosses down the railway to Ahmed Helmy St. and continue until El Khalafawy Square to intersect with Line 2 at El Khalafawy Station then Gisr El Bahr St. until El-Sahel area the end of this line with a length of about 20 km, the total number of stations will be about 17 underground station. The studies for this line will cost about 80 Million EGP, whereas the construction cost will be around 14 Billion EGP ( about 825 Million Euro + 7 Billion EGP).

Greater Cairo Metro - Line 6 This line starts from El Khosous area at exit 18 of the Ring Road and then continues until the East of Shubra Al Khiemah then goes along beside Ismailia Canal, and will continue until El Sawah Square, then Port Said St. to cross above Line 1 at Ghamrah Station Until El-Sayeda Zeinab Square then continues to El Fustat Park to intersect with Line 4 and continues to the New Maadi area next to the Satellite area end of this line, with a length of about 30 km, 10 km of them on viaduct and about 20 km underground. The sixth line will include 24 Stations,, 4 elevated and 20 underground stations. The studies for this line will cost about 100 Million EGP, whereas the construction cost will be around 20 Billion EGP ( about 1.25 Billion Euro + 10 Billion EGP ).

Alexandria Metro Line shall extend from Abou-Qier (at the east) to K.P. 21 Matrouh Road (at the west) with a length of about 43 km. The Project phases shall be as follows. Phase 1: It shall extend from Abou-Qier Railway Station to Misr Station with a total length of about 21.5 km. The said Phase shall include 18 Stations, 9 of them at-grade, 6 over track and 3 on viaduct, with a maintenance workshop and rolling stock depot with a total length of about 21.5 km. Phase 2: It shall extend from Misr Station to Al-Max Station with a total length of about 8 km, the said Phase shall include 6 underground stations. Phase 3: It shall extend from Al-Max Station to K.P. 21 Matrouh Road (at the west) with a total length of about 13.5 km including 500m located for the inspection area, the said phase shall include 9 stations, 3 of them on viaduct and 6 stations shall be under-ground stations. L' Agence Francais de Development (AFD) offered a grant of 0.5 million Euros to study the optimal solution to the problem of mass transit in Alexandria and future expansions up to Burj Al Arab, a committee was formed by a decision of Minister of Transport to choose the consultant who will study, review and approve the consultant study. It is required to provide funding for the implementation of the project.

8.8 Km 1.8 Km NAT prepared a preliminary study for the project of the Extension of Line 2 of Greater Cairo Metro (El Mounib- Shubra Al Khiema) to Qalyoub. Qalyub This extension will be from Shubra Al Khiema station at the east parallel to the existing railway lines till the city of Qalyoub, The length of this Part is about 7 km. Mit Nama The extension will continue with an additional distance of about 1.8 km to reach the intermodal station, which means that the total length of this extension will be about 8.8 km.
