Letter From the Editor I hope you were able to attend our annual SFBA/Valley Picnic earlier this month. We had a great turnout (21 people and 3 dogs), wonderful weather (not too hot) and a convenient. location. There were six Corvairs in the parking area which is not as many as in the past, but they did draw some attention. See story and pictures on page 3. Our next meeting is being replaced with a Tech Session to be held at Buck s house in Concord. This will be on Saturday, September 15 th starting around 10:00 AM. This will be the first one for 2018 and should be a fun event. Seth is going to lead the discussion on replacing push rod tube o-ring seals. This is the Achilles heal for the Corvair engine. It s not that Corvair engines leak more than any other engines but there are so many more locations where leaks are possible. Push rod tubes are a prime example. They re in close proximity with the hot exhaust manifold and engine cooling air, so the slightest leak becomes noticeable as this air is also used to heat the interior of the car. And with 12 push rod tubes and two o-rings each, it s very difficult to keep these all perfectly sealed. Thus the common need to replace leaking o-rings. It s not a difficult job but a bit time consuming. Seth will have a disassembled engine so we can see just what we are getting into. He will cover the special tools that make this job easier although they aren t required and, quite frankly, most don t bother to get them.. Before the demonstration gets going, we will have ample time to talk shop over coffee and donuts. Following the demonstration and Q&A session, we will have a BBQ. The Club will be providing burgers and dogs. Just show up, learn something and enjoy the day! I hope to see lots of people show up and drive your Corvair! A map and directions appear on page 5. I tried to make the directions as simple as I could, but feel free to follow your GPS. Paul is still in recovery mode but is hoping to make the next meeting. We look forward to his return! SFBA/Valley Picnic -2018 It was a very nice morning in Fremont when I arrived at Quarry Lakes Park. At about 9:30 I was hoping to secure a couple of tables before they were all taken. In years past I had to settle for second best tables as others had arrived earlier than I had. However this year, for whatever reason, was different. I was the first one in the whole picnic area so I had my choice of tables. I picked two which had good, working BBQs and good views of the lakes and the parking area plus plenty of shade. Also I could see the cars entering the Park to be sure Corvairs were directed accordingly. I quickly unload all my stuff making sure to cover both tables so they would look occupied. Then I settled in with my ipad planning on a hour or so of quiet time before others arrived. As it happened to my surprise (pleasantly) about 10:00 I saw the first Corvair coming through the gate. It was Lane and Gigi in his 65 convertible. I waved pointing him to the parking area I was trying to reserve for Corvairs. But he must not have seen me as he turned in the wrong direction and proceeded to another area of the park which was pretty empty at the time. A few minutes later here he comes driving back and this time he sees me and followes my pointing to the parking area. Lane brought a canopy and chairs among other things so we proceeded to set this up in an open area which turned out to be a popular as the afternoon heated up. In short order other Corvairs and SFBA/Valley members arrived and our Picnic was off to a great start. I started the BBQs around 11:30 hoping to get the burgers, dogs, and tritip well on their way by noon so we could start eating soon afterward. Once the coals were hot the BBQs were kept busy. Seth took care of the tri-tip on one and I handled the burgers and dogs on the other. People brought various salads, chips, drinks, munchies, desserts, etc. As typical there was plenty of food and enjoyable conversation. I am afraid I didn t keep track of who brought what to give people proper credit. Sorry! Although some people couldn t make it due to schedule conflicts, in the end we had 21 members and guests turn out and 3 dogs. In the parking lot we had 6 Corvairs evenly split with 2 earlies, 2 lates, and 2 FCs! This year even Kevin stopped by for a few minutes. He was on his way to pickup his son and had some time to spare. I haven t seen him in a several years and it was good to catch up. He said that he had gone to the (see Picnic... on page 10) What a perfect spot for a picnic! More pictures on page 6. Treasurers Report August 2018 Paul Lacey Checking Acct. More Pictures of the SFBA/Valley Picnic Nice view of the lake. A few poeple fishing -hard to see Burgers and dogs cooking away! Some folks getting their lunch plates ready. While one tri-tip is being sliced, a second one finishes. Picnicers enjoying a cool spot thanks to Lane s canopy! A good group shot of our picnic this year! I was hoping to keep Corvairs together. Who let that Honda get in there? On the other side of the isle, a couple more Corvairs were parked. I wonder if the Park would ve let us cone-off a section for Corvairs? There is plenty of space. SFBA Corsa - September 2018 page 9

Picnic... Spring Fling in Roseville but I didn t see him. He also said he hasn t driven his Rampside in a while as it needs some work. He is planning on retiring pretty soon and possibly moving out of state as traffic (and prices) in this area are a killer! After the BBQ was complete, I took some time to get some photos of the picnic crowd and the cars in the lot. I hope everyone had as enjoyable a day as I had! The picnic started wrapping up around 2 or 2:30. Everyone lent a hand as the coolers, gear and excess food was being packed up. There was still time left as people headed off to finish out their day! Quarry Lakes Park in 2015 = = = = To the right are a couple of interesting photos of Quarry Lakes Park. The top one was taken at our picnic in 2015 and the bottom one was this year. The perspective is a bit different but they do show how much the bushes have grown. They must really like this area! page 10 SFBA Corsa - September 2018 Quarry Lakes Park in 2018
