Friendship Cruising Club s Newsletter On Board Issue No 30 September 2016 A message from Captain Sandra Our Masquerade Summer Ball Hello Folks! This is our 30 th Edition of On Board and looking back at our first edition in April 2008 it had No Name and the FCC had No flag. Having the privilege of a complete back copy of On Board I can see all the wonderful things we have done together and the great contributions from everybody. May it continue for many years to come. Since the previous edition we had a lovely walk from Sawley Marina to the Clock Tower in Shardlow and back. We had the Get out of That weekend which was another great success with everybody joining in and having fun. A gang of us had a wonderful time on the Canal du Midi for the Captain s cruise and many of us enjoyed the cruise to Watermead Park via Barrow on Soar. The Summer Ball was fantastic and our weekend at Holme Pierrepont proved a jewel of a find. The monthly club nights have been well attended with a mixture of people arriving by boats or just coming by car we don t mind how you come, just come and join us for some great company and usually a good laugh. Looking forward now to our weekend at Carsington Water and the Mystery Trip and the many more events in the pipeline. Thanks to everyone who helped organize these events as always a team effort. Captain Sandra

/8 Towpath Walk in April Mick organised a lovely walk for us along the Trent & Mersey Canal from Sawley to Shardlow. We crossed the Derwent using the new bridge and Mick gave us an interesting background to it. We ate at the Clock Warehouse before wandering back to Sawley Our Get out of That weekend at the beginning of May seems such a long time ago now as so many things have happened since then. We had some great games and camaraderie and well done to the winning team. The entertainment was excellent I could listen to Grant Matthews every night. Here are a few photographs! Ready for glasses you two? How many men does it take to...?

/8 Captain s Cruise to the Canal du Midi Our boats Amiens and St Sernin Lovely weather, great accommodation on a well kept and clean canal, French food, French wine, wonderful friends AND Carcassonne just about sums up the Captain s Cruise to the Canal du Midi this year. Hope you enjoy the photographs! The Canal and the Locks One of many restaurants visited along the way Carcassonne

/8 Our Masquerade Summer Ball What a wonderful time we had at our Masquerade Ball at Normanton Village Hall the venue was ideal for all members as we had a lovely flat field to site our caravans and motor homes and it was less than a five minute walk from the River Soar and moorings outside the Plough. I m sure we will use the hall again. Who s behind the masks? This belle of the ball was having fun After a relaxed Friday basking in the sunshine and of course a BBQ, the Management Committee set to on Saturday to decorate Normanton village hall to reflect the Masquerade theme ready for the 32 FCC members who had bought tickets to attend the ball. The Graham James band arrived early to set up and after having been welcomed to the ball by Captain Sandra and Jim we all sat down to eat at 8pm. The food provided by the Swan at Sileby was lovely with plenty of it. The bar was well stocked and I think they had a good night out of us. By 9pm we were all up and dancing and only stopped for a break for the Raffle. A great evening had by all! 6/8 FUN AT HOLME PIERREPONT ON THE AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND Over the Easter Weekend 18 members of the FCC set out for our gathering at Holme Pierrepont. Three boats sailed up the Trent stopping one night in Nottingham, one night in Gunthorpe and then back down to Holme Pierrepont. At the same time four caravans and two motorhomes set up at the Country Park next to the National Water Sports Centre. This is a great site and I m sure we will return there in the future. We walked around the Centre watching a team relay Triathlon on the Saturday and we also managed to cycle three times over the weekend (in fact Robert went four times) and particularly enjoyed tea stops at the MacMillan tent on the Steps in Nottingham. We played croquet, petanque and Jenga and enjoyed a couple of very nice BBQs. On the Saturday night we all met up for a meal at the Unicorn in Gunthorpe which as usual was a great occasion. Here are a few photographs for you to enjoy.

/8 SAT NAV a new Poem by Pam Ayres I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car. A Satnav is a driver s friend, it tells you where you are. I have a little Satnav, I ve had it all my life. It s better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife. It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive It s sixty miles an hour it says, You re doing sixty five. It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake. And tells me that it s never ever, safe to overtake. It tells me when a light is red and when it goes to green. It seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene. It lists the vehicles just in front, and all those to the rear. And taking this into account, it specifies my gear. I m sure no other driver has so helpful a device for when we leave and lock the car, it still gives its advice. It fills me up with counselling, each journey s pretty fraught. So why don t I exchange it and get a quieter sort? Ah well you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I m properly fed. It washes all my shirts and things and keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages and my tendency to scoff, I only wish that now and then, I could turn the bugger off. Meadows Way Guest House 18-22 Bridge Street Uttoxeter Staffordshire ST14 8AP Telephone :- 01889 562763 FCC Valentines Weekend 2017 We are hoping to hold the annual FCC Valentines event in Uttoxeter over the weekend of Friday 10 th & Saturday 11 th February 2017 This is always a Full and Fun Packed weekend that should not be missed The price will be only 60.00 per couple for the whole weekend As the event is limited to a maximum of 16 couples we would ask that anyone who would like to attend should pass their names to Jim as soon as is possible
