UPDATED MAY 23, 2010 ZACHARIAH PUTMAN Virginia to Kentucky to Ohio then Illinois I am listing Zachariah Putman and his family in this section as he was in Kentucky, no more no less. It seems he is a son of Daniel Putman of Virginia and South Carolina, but he might be a son of John Putman, Daniel s brother. Most researchers feel he was a son of Daniel Putman of South Carolina. Daniel was a brother of the John and Henry Putman who are fully detailed earlier in this section. Daniel left Culpeper County, Virginia and went to Union County and then Laurens County in South Carolina. His brother John went from Virginia to North Carolina and then returned to Virginia and joined his brother Henry in the trip to Kentucky. When Daniel's will and estate were settled in 1822, it mentioned that among several other children, Zachariah was without the boundaries of South Carolina in parts unknown. It is this reference that leads most people to feel that Zach was Daniel's son. Zachariah Putman was born in Culpeper County, Virginia no matter who his parents were as all four brothers (Henry, John, Daniel and James Putman) were in Virginia in 1775 when Zachariah was born. He was born on December 9, 1775. The family he was traveling with, that of John Putman was in Bourbon County, Kentucky in the late 1790s. There Zachariah married Winifred Collins on January 17, 1797. At roughly the same time, John Putman's daughter Frances Putman married Winnie's brother Henry Collins. Both were children of John Collins who went on to Mason County with the Putman families. In fact he may well have come along from Culpeper County right from the start. This is why Zachariah could also be a son of John Putman. Zachariah appears on the tax list of Mason County, Kentucky along with the elder John and Henry on June 10, 1800. He and his family remained there until 1816 when they headed to Champaign County in west central Ohio, The family first settled in Mad River Township and in 1821 moved to Jackson Township where he remained for the rest of his life. The first six of his children were born in Mason County, Kentucky and the other two in Champaign County, Ohio. He owned a 143 acre farm near St. Paris, Ohio. Winnie died there in 1845.
