Million BUSINESS NEWS Sri Lankan Tourism Industry Sri Lanka is known as one of the most appealing tourist destinations in the world. Due to its strategic location, the island attracted many merchants and explorers for many decades. Today, Sri Lanka offers a spectrum of attraction for leisure and business travelers. Furthermore, it offers a mix of tourist attractions including beaches, wild life parks, rain forests, tea plantations, ancient ruins, Buddhist cultural sites, and festivals. According to the statistics, the tourism industry is the third largest export earner in the economy, after remittances and textiles/garments. The total contribution of Travel & Tourism to GDP was USD 9,871.2million, which resumable 11.6% of GDP in 2017. In the last five years, the Sri Lankan Tourism industry achieved an unprecedented growth of tourist arrivals, averaging more than 22% year on year. Sri Lanka is ranked 64th out of 141 countries in the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 of the World Economic Forum. Also, GlobalData s Tourism Potential Index has ranked Sri Lanka as the fourth fastest growing tourism market in the world. Sri Lanka has obtained a score of 52.8 points while achieving a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7 %. The total number of international tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka during Jan-Jul 2018 was 1,382,476. In comparison to Jan - Jul last year, when the arrivals were 1,215,926, growth indicated 13.7%. India, China, United Kingdom, Germany and France were Sri Lanka s top five international tourist generating markets in 2017. 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5 0 1.274 Tourist arrivals 1.527 1.798 2.05 2.116 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 Source: Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) India was the largest source of tourist traffic to Sri Lanka with 384,628 arrivals. China recorded 268,952 arrivals while UK, Germany and France accounted for 188,159, 133,275 and 97,282 respectively. According to the industry experts and researchers, although the tourism industry is expected a continuous growth, poor planning and management of the industry and limited diversity of markets/products are contributing to a lack of value-adding opportunities. This causes the per capita visitor expenditure to be reduced. Moreover, the experts explained that as visitor numbers increase year by year, there is a mounting pressure to manage environmental impacts in areas of high tourist use as well as for land use in high tourism potential areas, to access appropriately skilled human resources, and to maintain tourist service and product quality standards. Hence, the Sri Lankan Tourism sector strives to reframe the industry with new strategies which will ensure a continuous growth. For instance, the Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affair launched the 2017-2020 Strategic plan that is Most visitors arriving to Sri Lanka on a short-term basis in 2017 were from the following countries India 12% 18% 9% United Kingdom France 25% China 36% Germany Source: Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) currently being implemented, to enhance the value positioning and the development of the industry. As a result, Sri Lanka s new country branding for tourism, focusing on diversity of attractions, will be unveiled at the World Travel Mart (WTM) in London in November 2018. Also, KNOWSL which is one of the newest digital platforms dedicated to promote the Sri Lankan travel and hospitality industry, was recently launched to attract inbound tourists and local travelers. With all these initiatives, Sri Lanka is expected to increase the GDP contribution of Tourism industry and enhance the living standards of Sri Lankan people. Page 5

BUSINESS NEWS A Mutually Beneficial Business Opportunity Between Germany and Sri Lanka The Sri Lanka-Germany Forum (SLG) is an organization that was created to facilitate the entry of German investors in order to uplift the organic and natural products market in Sri Lanka, while also enabling Sri Lankan manufacturers to export the high-quality products made locally to a discerning German clientele. In 2017 Agriculture contributed only 7.1% of the GDP of Sri Lanka. There is urgent need to lift the out growers, small and medium entrepreneurs at grassroot level to process and pitch for the export markets. Germany accounts of USD 506 Million imports from Sri Lanka in 2017 when the EU has a 30% of the total exports. Form the total exports Coconuts 5%, Food and Beverages 4% in the same year. Clearly this poor performance is undermined by many factors which are been addressed by SLG. The students of the Wayamba University food faculty play a major role in the R&D of exportable new products. SLG has signed an MOU with the UOW for such research to suit current trends in Germany. The SLG s members offer a diverse portfolio of products, including superfood products such as Jackfruit, Moringa and Bees Honey, all organically made. Organic vegetables, coconut and coconut products, natural tea additives (such as hibiscus and dried fruit) are also included in this range. Handloom and traditional rice varieties are also a special highlight. Another traditional industry supported by SLG is the clay pottery industry, which has its own unique Sri Lankan flavor. It was also created to enable the technical training and knowledge spillover from Germany to Sri Lanka, focusing on creating robust Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs. SLG was founded by Architect Professor Peter Ruge, Mrs. Andrea Hahn of Text & Press and Suneth Wijesinghe who has been associated with Germany since 1986 and is ably supported by one of the most prestigious banks in Sri Lanka, Hatton National Bank (HNB). The SLG also receives the direct patronage of the State Minister of Finance and Mass Media of Sri Lanka, Minister Eran Wickramaratne who was involved since 2016 when the forum was created. The SLG currently has a membership of 20 Sri Lankan organic, natural and sustainable goods SMEs, who are connected to over 8,000 farmer communities. They are quite well-known in the local market, but are struggling. As has been witnessed all over the world, growers and manufacturers who attempt to practice organic cultivation and sustainable production methods suffer from the lack of a good customer base in the developing world. They are outcompeted by other producers who use chemical means of enhancing their products. This chemically enhanced product may be of law quality and harmful to health, but it has a lion s share of the markets due to cost cutting and cheaper production. To support this worthy cause SLG forum is proposing a project in Kurunegala to have a dedicated Agriculture processing zone namely AGRIZONE which will be a farmer community-based project. We are inviting German SMEs, Individual to invest in this project. The high-quality products manufactured by SLG s members support impoverished communities all over Sri Lanka, and they are in desperate need of a market that will appreciate the quality and environmental consciousness embedded in their products. If they do not find the right consumer for these products, they may have to give up their livelihoods altogether, as they are pushed out of the local market by inferior quality produce and products. This will be a lost opportunity for foreign investors, as Sri Lanka can act as a steady supplier of high quality organic produce that can only Launch of SLG-HNB partnership held on 23rd July 2018. HNB Head of SME Jude Fernando SLG Co Founder Suneth Wijesinghe and Lucy Schulze Manager Public Projects & Vocational Training Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka grow in the tropics. It will also leave many farmer communities in a dangerously destitute situation. The SLG invites German investors, procurement departments and technical experts (in organic agriculture and sustainable business) to connect with the Sri Lankan market through SLG, and tap into an opportunity with immense potential and mutual benefits. SLG has also partnered with the Wayamba University and its entrepreneurial undergraduates and researchers, who have also established the Wayamba Innovation Centre on further research into sustainable production methods that will benefit the farmers and manufacturers. A Hospitality training school will be established with a German nationality certified trainer. This will be partnership with UOW and SLG. Peter Ruge Development UG and Malco Engineering Pvt Limited offer investment opportunities for German Nationals in housing projects, Hotels and Resorts, Ayurveda. This opportunity is also for the My Second Home Sri Lanka to purchase a house or apartment and live in Sri Lanka. They have also promoted Sri Lankans to partner with investors in Germany to establish Sri Lankan restaurants, Ayurveda centers and Organic food shops and travel related partnerships. Page 6

BUSINESS NEWS Will make Colombo ECT the largest in South Asia -Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe- The government of Sri Lanka will develop the Colombo Port's East Container Terminal (ECT) to be the largest and deepest container terminal in South Asia without any foreign funding, Ports and Shipping Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said on 24 th August 2018. He further announced that he would submit the proposal and blueprint of the development plan to the Cabinet shortly. The Hambantota Port is being operated and managed by two Sri Lankan and Chinese companies -- Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) owned by the CM Port of China and the Hambantota International Port Services (HIPS) owned by the SLPA on a 90-year lease agreement. The majority shares are held by the Chinese company. The biggest container terminal at the Colombo Port, the South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT), is also operated and managed by a conglomerate that includes Maersk Group and John Keells on a 30-year lease agreement signed during the Chandrika Kumaratunga government. Funding for the development of ECT will be provided by the SLPA and the Treasury, he said. When asked about the cost of the development project, the minister said it would be known only after the tender were offered to produce machinery and a minimum of 15 months was needed to produce and deliver the machinery. Photo: Sri Lanka Ports Authority It will take a minimum of 15 months to manufacture, deliver and fix the machinery. But one cannot wait for that long to begin the development and expansion programme. This his hope to obtain machinery on lease after calling tenders only for the interim period. The minister explained that the three terminals at the Port of Colombo, the Jeya Container Terminal, SAGT and ECT cannot take massive ships and tankers because they are fully-occupied round the clock. Besides, the depth of three terminals does not permit access to big vessels. Once the ECT s development project is concluded, the ECT will provide berthing facilities to some of the biggest ships and tankers in the world. The development project of the ECT will be launched in three months, he said. Ship Arrivals Source: Sandun A. Jayasekera, Daily Mirror, 2018-08-24 About the Port of Colombo The Port of Colombo is the largest and busiest port in Sri Lanka. Also, it is concerned as a rapidly growing maritime hub in the South Asia. Europe, East and South Asia, the Persian Gulf, and East Africa are conveniently and efficiently connected through the Port of Colombo because of its strategic location. The Port operates five terminals and develops the East Container Terminal for another expansion. Colombo Port celebrated 6millionth Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) handling on 22nd December 2017 and Port of Colombo is ranked at 25 th among the busiest container traffic handling ports in the world (2016). Further, it recorded a 137% growth rate of container traffic from 2012 to 2016. SRI LANKA AN EXPORT HUB DRIVEN BY INNOVATION AND INVESTMENT The National Export Strategy (NES), a flagship development project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Development Strategies & International Trade and the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) together with the public private partnership, has started implementation in high waves after obtaining the Cabinet approval and the launch with all the stakeholders of NES. Sri Lanka now has the opportunity to catch up with fast-growing Asian exporting countries. The NES is a comprehensive and carefully structured five- year strategy aimed at increasing exports and generating enhanced revenue for Sri Lanka s SMEs and exporters. The implementation of this endeavor will witness the increasing of Sri Lanka s export revenue to USD 28 Billion by 2022. The National Export Strategy is well aligned with, complements and operationalizes other national initiatives such as Enterprise Sri Lanka and Vision 2025. The NES priority sectors have been selected to ensure a balanced export expansion from visionary, emerging and mature sectors which provide a good mix of industries with different growth trends, yet ensures the NES remains focused to achieve the key objective of export diversification during its 05-year implementation period. Using quantitative and qualitative information, the national stakeholders have selected the following industries: IT-BPM, Spices & Concentrates, Wellness Tourism, Processed Food & Beverages, Boat Building, and Electrical & Electronic machinery. The NES will improve the business environment for all Sri Lankan enterprises. While the NES provides the conditions to enable diversification by strengthening emerging sectors, all export industries of Sri Lanka will benefit from the increased performance of key Trade Support Functions. These include Logistics, National Quality Infrastructure, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Trade Information & Promotion. The NES aims to empower the emergence of new champions while supporting growth of traditional export industries. Major systemic issues hindering the rapid expansion of Sri Lanka s exports will be corrected to favour growth of higher-technology and knowledgeintensive exports, which are less vulnerable to cost shifts. The Advisory Committees, established by the EDB have already commenced the implementation while the NES Management Unit which was established under the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade leads the coordination, follow up and monitoring of the NES. The National Export Strategy is reinvigorating the trading environment and maximizing its potential to usher in a period of sustained growth, aimed at increasing livelihoods for millions of Sri Lankans. The NES is navigating Sri Lanka to its rightful place in the Indian Ocean, as a sophisticated, innovative & dynamic trade hub serving Asia and beyond. Page 10
