Base Programming has been set to allow for consistency amongst our Summer Camps and to ensure that our excellent national Guiding program is part of each child s camping experience. Every Branch s Base Programming contains requirements for: 1. an expectation to be out of doors, 2. an expectation to participate in some self-selected activities, 3. an expectation to participate in a campfire program, and, 4. an expectation to build some components of the national Guiding program curriculum into the schedule. The national Guiding program curriculum pieces were chosen from many ideal selections. They were selected as it was felt they balanced out our directive for camping from Girl Guides of Canada s Guiding Essentials: Outdoor activities, including camping, are an important part of the program. They provide opportunities for fun, adventure and challenge; create a love of a healthy outdoor life; foster an appreciation of the beauty and wonder of nature; and promote environmental stewardship and sound conservation practices There are many other components of the national Guiding programs that would be terrific to incorporate into our Summer Camp schedules beyond the Base Programming. Don t feel that the Guiding program can t be used to build the rest of your program! In fact, we encourage it. By no means is the Base Programming expected to make up or take over the entire camp schedule however parents will know about the Base Programming so there is an expectation for compliance in each session of camp program. There should be lots of opportunities for building creative schedules and exploring the gifts that leaders can bring to the camp program. Volunteer and employee input are crucial to the success of our camps. Finding the balance of compliance to the Base Programming with creative input from our staff will become the responsibility of the local Camp Communities and the key staff people who work at our summer camps.
