UPDATED FEBRUARY 22, 2013 The Putmans/Putnams of Oregon County Missouri This is our South Carolina contingency. Amos Putman, son of James and Joice Putman of South Carolina, had moved to Tennessee. Many of his children continued westward to Missouri and we find a bunch of Putmans after 1860 in Oregon County Missouri. For more on Amos Putman, see the South Carolina Section. This is an update on the folk who moved to Missouri. William L. Putman He was born in South Carolina in about 1808. He married Delilah Richardson in Williamson County Tennessee on May 22, 1832. She was born in Tennessee in 1812. They were in Weakley County Tennessee in 1850 and in Henry County Tennessee in 1860. I do not find him in 1870 when he would be about 62 years old. In the 1850 and 1860 census they had: JAMES F. PUTMAN born 1835. In 1860 he is living next door to his folks in Henry County Tennessee with a wife named Rachel Susan Brown. They were married in Coffee County Tennessee on October 1, 1856. He is in Oregon County Missouri in 1870 living with the family of James and Nancy Kidwell. Nancy is probably his aunt, a daughter of Amos, see later listing for Nancy Putman. Rachel had died by this time. He then married Margaret J. Bledsoe in Oregon County Missouri on June 1, 1873. They were in Grayson County Texas in 1880. SUSAN PUTMAN born 1842. She was at home in 1860. JOHN PUTMAN born in 1844. He was missing or died by 1860. James Putman James was born in South Carolina in about 1815. He married Polly Garrett in Williamson County Tennessee on November 28, 1834. She must have died very shortly thereafter, because on June 18, 1840, he married Sarah Ann Morris. In the 1840 census they had no children and they were gone from Tennessee by the 1850 report. I next find them in Oregon County Missouri in 1860 and 1870. His wife is Sarah in 1860, but in 1870 his wife is listed as Elizabeth 22 years younger than him. Sarah must have died in the meantime. He had married Rebecca Elizabeth Gill in Oregon County Missouri on January 27, 1870. He was living near Zachariah Putman, who may probably have been his son from his first

marriage. Zach is a question mark, and I list him separately later as he could be a son of either James or Jabel, though I lean towards James as his daddy. In 1870 he was 54, Elizabeth 32 and they had these children, who were Elizabeth's by a prior marriage and changed name to Putman: JOHN PUTMAN born in 1855 in Alabama. JAMES PUTMAN born in 1864 in Arkansas. Jabel Putman Jabel was born in about 1818 in South Carolina. He married Arena or Lurena Lamb in Williamson County on March 12, 1840. In 1850 they were in Weakley County Tennessee. In 1860 they were in Obion County Tennessee and in Oregon County Missouri in the 1870, 1880 and the 1900 Census reports. In 1850 he was listed as Jabez, in 1860 as Jabel, in 1870 as J.D. and in 1880 as J.B. and in 1900 as Jabel. In 1900, He was living with his son, George, in Oregon County at the age of 82 years. Based on the 1850 and 1860 census reports, they had: MARY ANN PUTMAN born in 1841. She married Thomas R. Williams in Obion County Tennessee on December 12, 1857. WILLIAM PUTMAN born 1843. In 1880 his folks are in Oregon County Missouri and, William is missing and I assume he died. JAMES HARVEY PUTMAN born August 29, 1845. He was in Craighead County Arkansas in 1880 and then in Eastland County Texas in 1900 and 1910. It appears he married several times. He first married Margaret Ervin in Obion County on October 17, 1866 and they had at least three children. He married Margaret June Bledsoe on June 1, 1873 in Oregon County Missouri. In the late 1870s, he left the kids with his folks and went to Arkansas. He married Sarah McCoy in Craighead County Arkansas on September 11, 1879. She must have died as his wife is Rina C. Liptrap in Eastland County Texas in 1900. Her maiden name was Byrd, but she was a widow and her married name was Liptrap and she was from Missouri. Children of the first marriage with Margaret Ervin were: Lourina Putman born in Tennessee in 1867. Martha Jane Putman born in Tennessee in 1869. Edward Sidney Putman born in Missouri in 1872. He and his wife Mattie are in Missoula County Montana in 1900, then in Tacoma, Washington in 1910 and 1920. Mattie is widowed there in 1930. Nelson Bedford Putman born in Missouri in 1873. James Howard Putman born in Missouri September 13, 1876. In 1900 he is in Stone County Arkansas and in Eastland County Texas in 1910 and 1920 and in Fisher County Texas in 1930. He married Anna Melissa Bowermaster in Arkansas December 5, 1893. His wife Anna was born in Jefferson County Illinois March 30, 1869, and died in Abilene, Texas July 26, 1933. James died in Terrell, Texas February 28, 1955. The children were:

Charles Bedford Putnam born November 2, 1894 and died February 15, 1898 in Lawrence County Arkansas. Arminta Faith Putman born February 19, 1898 in Arkansas and died in San Diego, California September 15, 1982. She married George Washington Williams. They had a daughter: Mabel Ruth Williams born in 1923. Sidney Otto Putnam born October 25, 1901 in Stone County Arkansas. He married Gladys Kelso in Roby, Texas January 1, 1927. She was born in Union, Missouri May 30, 1907 and died in Abilene, Texas November 6, 1996. Sidney died in Hamlin, Texas March 5, 1983. They had these children: Charles D. Putnam born August 18, 1929, and did September 16, 1931. Bedford Andrew Putnam born March 6 1931. Robert Bryce Putnam born January 18, 1935. He died March 5, 2006. Glena Lanell Putnam born August 23, 1936. Sidney Wayne Putnam born July 21, 1938. He died November 26, 1939. Anna Irene Putnam born March 3, 1940. Thomas Putnam born and died on July 5, 1941. Edna Maxine Putnam born and died May 14, 1944. Joyce Laverne Putnam born March 28, 1950. She married Samuel Phil Smith July 31, 1976. She was the one who supplied the info on this part of the family. Infant Twin Putnam born and died October 25, 1901 Alice Gertrude Putman born January 24, 1904 in Texas, and died in Bronte, Texas on November 30, 1990. She married Lumon Loftland. He was born August 17, 1906 and died in Bronte July 1, 1991. They had a daughter: Gwena Lou Loftland. Abbie Jewel Putnam born in Eastland County Texas March 11, 1906 and died in Dallas, Texas January 10, 2000. She married Charlie William Warren. They had: Joyce Charlene Warren who married Buck Frances. Eva Maurine Warren who married William D. Lambert. Betty Sue Warren who married Bobbie Strain. Anna D. Warren who married Lucius King. Nelson Andrew Putnam born in Centerpoint, Texas November 7, 1908. He married Vada Plemons and they are with his folks in Fisher County in 1930. He died August 8, 1968. Vada was born May 27, 1911 and died February 22, 2002. Both are buried in Nienda, Texas. They had: Bonnie Putnam who married Soapy Floyd. Altha Putnam who married Gene Adam. Billie Putnam who married Jackie Williams. James Horace Putnam who married Cynthia. The children of the third marriage, all born in Eastland County Texas were: Jessie D. Putnam born October 14, 1897. He married Oma Lewe Byers. David Oliver Putnam born January 18, 1899. He married Theryn McBee in 1923. George Amos Putnam born March 22, 1900. Joseph Albert Putnam born January 25, 1906 and died in Cisco, Texas in April 1969. He married Gladys Kelso in 1929 and they are in Jones County as is his mother Rena Lintrap Putnam. GEORGE WASHINGTON PUTMAN born in 1847. He married Mary M. Bledsoe in Obion County Tennessee on March 25, 1869. He moved to Arkansas for five years, probably with his brother James, and then moved to Oregon County Missouri in about 1876.

He married Sarah Susan Harmon in Oregon County on January 16, 1877. In 1880 he had three children, two by his first wife. He was still there in 1900 with his father, then 82, living with them. Children, based only on the 1880 and 1900 returns were: Nancy L. Putman born in Tennessee in 1874. Mary Jane Putman born in Arkansas in 1876. Benjamin Franklin Putman born in Missouri in February 1879. In 1900 he is in Red River County Texas with a wife named Sarah, born in Missouri in 1881 and these daughters: Purlie Putman born in Missouri in 1898. Myrtle Putman born in Missouri in 1891. JANE PUTMAN born in 1850. There is a marriage record in Oregon County between Holly Jane Putman and W. J. Banks on June 23, 1879. I assume this is this gal. MARTHA ANN PUTMAN born in 1852. There is a marriage record in Oregon County Missouri for a Martha J. Putman and James F. Green on November 18, 1874. I do not know for certain if this is her or not. Nancy Putman Nancy was born about 1820. She had not married and was still living with her father in 1860. There is a marriage record for Nancy marrying Philemon Gauldin in Oregon County on December 8, 1861. He must have died, Civil War or something. Then she married James Kidwell and was in Oregon County Missouri in 1870 with her nephew James Putman living with her. In 1880 she was widowed and living with her brother Zachariah Putman in Dade County Missouri. In 1870 the children, the first three probably from his first marriage, were: WILLIAM KIDWELL born in 1855 in Tennessee. SUSAN KIDWELL born in Arkansas in 1856. WASHINGTON KIDWELL born in Missouri in 1862. JOSEPHUS KIDWELL born in Missouri in 1864. Zachariah Putman He is listed in the 1850 census as being born in Tennessee in about 1838. He was not listed in the 1840 report as near as I can figure with any family. He is with Amos Putman in the 1850 census of Williamson County Tennessee and was undoubtedly a grandson. In 1860 he is living with James and Sarah Putman, and was 23 at that time. Zachariah was too young to be a son of Amos and Maryanne Putman, even though he was living with them in 1850. My guess is that Amos took him in when James' first wife died. I have no proof that he was a son of James, but it certainly looks that way to me. I am placing him here by himself, but he might go better under James Putman and that family.

In 1870 he is in Oregon County Missouri with his wife Cunis or Carolyn Bledsoe and three children. The official marriage record says he married Cunis A. Bledsoe in Oregon County Missouri on January 1, 1861. She goes by Caroline until 1900 when she is listed as Eunis (obviously her real name Cunis). He appears in the 1880 Census of Dade County Missouri with his wife Caroline born in North Carolina. In 1880 he has six children, the eldest being 17 and born in Missouri. Therefore they were there in the very early 1860s. He moved to Oklahoma in 1889 and was listed in the Cherokee Nation in 1900. The 1890 census of Oklahoma states he arrived in 1889 with a family of eight. These children, all born in Missouri, were listed in the various census reports: JAMES J. PUTMAN born January 22, 1863 in Missouri. He arrived in Oklahoma in 1889, but he is not listed there in 1900. He was married to Josie a Cherokee Indian and he died in Mayes County Oklahoma January 22, 1902. Josie died in Pryor Mayes County in 1930. Kids I am aware of are: Frank Putman born in 1881. He was with his brother and mother in 1920 single, and then widowed and living with his brother Robert in 1930. Robert Putman born February 5, 1889 in Missouri and died in Mayes County Oklahoma January 27, 1942. He had a wife Georgia born about 1906 and these 2 kids in 1930: Eunice G. Putman born in 1922. Robert J. Putman born about 1926. Jesse Putman born about 1894. He was single and had his mother with him in 1920 and died about 1928 in Mayes County. GEORGE WASHINGTON PUTMAN born July 17, 1863. His first wife was an Indian named Laura. They were married in 1888. In 1900 in Franklin County Arkansas, she was with him. Laura was born April 14, 1866 in Illinois and she died in Atlus June 5, 1908. He then married Nannie C. Baker and was there with her in 1910 and 1920. He died January 18, 1942. Children till then were: Floyd Raymond Putman born February 11, 1891. In 1920 he is in Franklin County Arkansas with a wife named Bertha and a daughter Vera Pauline born in 1913. In 1930 they are in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He died in Fort Smith, Arkansas October 31, 1975. Bertha was born in Oklahoma July 16, 1892 and died in Franklin County Arkansas March 2, 1987. Walter Franklin Putman born in September 1892. He is in Mayes County Oklahoma in 1920 and living with Robert Bledsoe, an uncle. He is also listed in Sebastian County Arkansas living with his mother in law Mary Keers. In 1930 he is married to Ada Keers and is in Tulsa Oklahoma. As of 1930 they had: Walter Bennett Putman born August 27, 1916. He will join the Army Air Force and become a Major General in the USAF. He will die in Fort Walton Beach, Florida October 12, 2010. Joseph Putman born about 1924. Viola Putman born July 16, 1903 in Arkansas and died in Franklin County Arkansas June 13, 1961. She married Harold Blanscet about 1925. He was born May 18, 1885 in

Arkansas and died in Paris, Logan County Arkansas March 1, 1973. They had: Anna M. Blanscet born about 1928. Harold Blanscet Jr. born April 17, 1939 in Logan County and died September 3, 1979 in Poteau, Oklahoma Raymond C. Putman born March 5, 1907 and died in Franklin County Arkansas in September 1974. He and his wife Reba Lauhon had these sons as of the 1940: John Raymond Putman was born March 27, 1926 and died in Franklin County September 17, 2004. James Putman born about 1927. Richard Putman born in 1929. Christine Putman born in 1931. Paul William Putman born June 28, 1933 and died October 26, 2009 in Mesquite, Nevada. Found his obit. He was a son of Charles Drew and Martha Lee, and was born at Webber Falls December 12, 1872. Susan died in Ontario, San Bernardino County California in 1938. George died there May 12, 1953. They had: Eugene Houghton Drew born April 30, 1896. He married Delphia Billie Coats. He died in Webb City, Missouri in September 1972.
