Page 3 March 2017 COMMODORE S REPORT COMMODORE S LOG Boy did the month of February blow by, literally and figuratively. I was a short month with a lot of activity at the Club. In the middle of the month we had several days of VERY strong wind and lots of rain. The Club seems to have fared quite well, in spite of heavy rains and winds recorded in the harbor at 71 mph. It seems that the only damage was few limbs broken in the Heritage tree. The Club arborist will attend to these very soon. The new roof on the annex was completed just in time and survived without any problems. I know a lot of our surviving the wind and rain goes to the diligence of many members that just seem to show up to check on things. I cannot name all of you, because you all seem to show up when no one is here to see you doing whatever needs to be done to take care of and protect the Club. To this unknown group we say a big THANK YOU, we are lucky to have such caring members. The February social calendar was very busy; Super Bowl Party, Valentine s Day /Party, Oscar Party and the new Crab Feed. Being busy with taxes for everyone, Carol and I were only able to make 2 of the 4 events; but from what I hear they were all a success. Those that missed the Super Bowl Party missed one of the best parties I have seen at the Club in a while. It was made doubly exciting because of the way it finished. I had no side in this game (my team was a no-show) but the comeback by the Patriots made for an exciting day, no matter who you were rooting for. The Crab Feed was INCREDIBLE! We had over 50 people attend and a few people were turned away since this was advance sales only. It was necessary to preorder the crab so the attendance was limited to those that signed up and paid in advance. You do not want to miss next year; I hear it will be back. Those that did attend had a great evening. There was more than enough crab, so no one went home hungry. (See a later article for thank you s to those that helped.) The Finance Committee will be meeting on Thursday, March 9 th, to review and discuss items that were included in the letters to Members by Me and Dave Grigsby, Treasurer. If you have input to those letters make sure that you get your comments/input to a Committee Member or put them in writing to us. This is an open opportunity for each Member to have direct input into the financial future of the Club. If you do not participate you do not have a basis to later criticize the actions taken. March brings back the start of Club Racing. The Frostbite series started March 4 th, skippers meeting will in the Fireplace Room at 11:30 on each race day. The race committee is doing a bang up job. If you do not have a boat or just want to try racing, as something new, show up at the skipper s meeting and you will always get a ride. This is the only way to get experience. I remember many races when I first stated sailing and had to ask to have terms explained before I could/ would do them. You only learn if you get out and try. Social is light this month. After having a very busy January and February the group needs a well-deserved rest. The big event this month will be the annual St. Paddy s dinner. Hear there will be a Pot of Gold somewhere near the Club. Can anyone find it? Fair Winds and Following Seas Chuck Enders Commodore CRAB FEED THANK YOU As mentioned in the Commodores Log there are a lot of THANK YOU s to be spread around for the Success of the Crab Feed. First and foremost this comeback of the Crab Feed was headed by Rita Jacques. Without Rita s idea this would not have come to pass. Thanks Rita, you are always stepping up to help the Club. Char Gregg prepared the salad, which was perfect, from all the produce that was DONATED by Mike Imlay. Thanks Char & Mike. As usual when there is activity in the kitchen you can find Linda Lewis in there assisting and providing needed expertise. Thank you Linda. You also know when Linda and Rita are taking care of a project that Frank and Stan are not far away. Both of these men were of big help in the kitchen and with the cleanup and with lots of little tasks no ever thinks about. Frank and Stan were accompanied by John (JD) Dunn. These 3 men also made sure that the dining room and kitchen were all cleaned up after the feed. Thanks to ALL of you for making the Crab Feed a very special event, i t would not have been done without all of you. THANKS!!!
Page 4 March 2017 WEBSITE AND THE PUBLIC Website EYC and the Public Just about everyone nowadays, when they want to find out about a yacht club, go on the internet and look at the club s website. The information they receive at the site usually determines whether or not they want to further look into joining the club. Websites are extremely important. What we need at this club is a website coordinator. What the coordinator does is look into the website weekly and sees to it that it is updated. The coordinator derives information from the various committees and sends it to the webmaster to publish it. The coordinator will have nothing to do with actually changing the website as that is the duty of the webmaster. The caretaker sends information about when the next races are and the results of the last races. The coordinator sends information about upcoming social events and sends pictures of past social events to the webmaster. The coordinator makes sure the website is current, informational and attractive to the general public. As of this time, we do not have a website coordinator. If anyone is interested in this position they should attend the next board meeting, send the board an email or notify the club manager and express their interest. Rex Keyes
