Welcome to the XXX CANARY ISLANDS WINTER SCHOOL OF ASTROPHYSICS Big Data Analysis in Astronomy La Laguna, November 4 th 10 th, 2018 http://www.iac.es/winterschool/2018 SCHOOL VENUE Standard lecture sessions will take place at the 'Salón de Actos' of the Aulario General del Campus de Guajara of the Universidad de La Laguna, Campus de Guajara s/n. It is located between the centre of the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna (usually just called 'La Laguna'), about 2 km away, and the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, whose centre is about 5 km away. The tram is most convenient for transport to and from the Guajara campus (Stop: "Campus Guajara ). It connects La Laguna and Santa Cruz and runs every 5-10 minutes in the mornings. Reaching the venue takes 10 minutes from La Laguna, and 20 from Santa Cruz. HOTELS IN LA LAGUNA There are three hotels in La Laguna, all of them located in the historical centre of the town: Hotel Laguna Nivaria (http://www.lagunanivaria.com): Plaza del Adelantado 11, 38201, San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Telephone number: +34-922-264298. Fax number: +34-922-259634 La Laguna Gran Hotel (https://lalagunagranhotel.com/): C/ Nava y Grimón 18, 38201, San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Telephone number: +34-922-108080 Hotel Laguna Aguere (http://www.hotelaguere.es): C/ Obispo Rey Redondo, 55, 38201-San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Telephone number: +34-922-314036. Fax number: +34-922-631633. How to reach the hotels from Tenerife North Airport (TFN) We recommend you to take a taxi, as it will cost you about 7-10 only. Alternatively, buses #102, 107 and 108 will take you from the airport to the Bus terminal station in La Laguna. From there, it is a 20 min walk to all the hotels.

How to reach the hotels from Tenerife South Airport (TFS) You can either catch a taxi (about 65 ) or Bus #111 (5,40 ) from TFS airport to Santa Cruz de Tenerife (main Bus terminal). From 06:00 to 22:30 there is a bus each 30 min. The Bus desk (labelled TITSA) is located at the extreme north side of the terminal and the bus stop is just outside of the terminal in front of the Bus desk. The ride to the Santa Cruz Bus station is about 40 min. The most convenient option to reach La Laguna from there is to take the tram ( tranvía ). The terminal is very close to the hotels (about 10 min walk). As you get out of the Bus terminal in Santa Cruz (East exit facing the sea) you will see the Tram terminal. Your destination is La Trinidad (line 1). Alternatively, a taxi from the Bus terminal station in Santa Cruz to the hotels in La Laguna will cost you about 20. Note: The local bus company is called TITSA, buses are painted bright green, and the local name for bus is "guagua". On the WS web page you will find useful links to the bus company and to Google maps for the itineraries. If you need additional help, please, do not hesitate to contact the organizers: WS secretary (Lourdes González): winter@iac.es Ana Monreal Ibero: amonreal@iac.es Jorge Sánchez Almeida: jos@iac.es Johan Knapen: johan.knapen@iac.es REGISTRATION AND CONFERENCE ROOM Registration desk On Sunday November 4 th, the Winter School registration desk will be open during the Welcome cocktail at the Hotel Laguna Nivaria (19:00 to 21:00). We recommend the use of eduroam, install this on your devices before you leave your home institute. POSTER ALLOCATION Individual poster panels (1m x 1m) will be available near the conference room on Monday 5 th since 08:00. Please, remove your posters on Friday 9 th during the morning coffee break. SOCIAL EVENTS Sunday 4 th (19:00 to 21:00): A welcome cocktail will be offered to all the participants at Hotel Laguna Nivaria. Wednesday 7 th : Visit to the Teide Observatory (Tenerife, 2400 m). We recommend you to bring warm clothing and comfortable shoes. We will depart by coach from the Campus Guajara, right after lunch at ~14:00h, and will be returning to La Laguna 20:30 (to be confirmed). The weather in November can be foul: rain, fog, wind and temperatures of around 5 degrees are all possible. On the other hand, it usually is sunny and a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen will then be needed. Thursday 8 th (18:30h 20:00h): After the tutorial session on unsupervised learning, participants will be invited to visit the IAC Headquarters to see the scientific and technical facilities at this research center. The IAC is the leading astrophysics research center in Spain, distinguished by the Spanish Government as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence. It is a 15-minute walk from the conference venue. Thursday 8 th ( 20:30h): Conference Dinner offered by the School s organizers at the Esquinazo. Friday 9 h (19:00h): Dr. Jorge Sánchez Almeida will give the Public Lecture in Spanish Big Data : uso en la vida real in the Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos (La Laguna), in front of the IAC. Saturday 10 th : Trip to the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma, 2400m). We recommend you to bring warm clothing and comfortable shoes. The way to the Observatory is a mountain road with many curves. For those with tendency to suffer from seasickness, we suggest to bring some medication to prevent it (e.g. Biodramina). We will travel by plane, leaving Tenerife North airport around 8 in the morning and arriving back there around 20:30 in the evening. On La Palma, we will travel by coach. Lunch and refreshments will be served at the Observatory. As at the Teide Observatory, the weather in November can be foul: rain, fog, wind and temperatures of around 5 degrees are all possible. On the other hand, it usually is sunny and a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen will then be needed.
