9561 5993 WRAG Newsletter Issue No. 177 April 2018 Presidents Corner April, 2018 Hello once again to all WRAG members. The last three months have been relatively quiet from a WRAG Activity Group perspective. Which is probably a good thing given our rather long, hot, and dry, summer. One item of note is that The City of Monash is renovating the Southern Community Hall in Rupert Drive Mulgrave and our Tuesday evening has gone into recess for the duration and our Thursday morning and Activity Groups have been temporarily moved (for about three months) to the Brandon Park Community Centre. The Friday afternoon 500 Cards Activity Group has also been relocated, but to the Monash Community Centre at 355 Wellington Road. Eighteen members of the WRAG Caravan and Cabin Getaway Group travelled to Tallangatta to spend four nights and three days on the North East Blitz https://tallangattamotorinn.com/tours/north-east-blitz/ from 25 29 March 2018. With visits to towns like Bright, Beechworth, Corryong, and to the Snowy Hydro Substation No 2. Our hosts Ellen and Mark and coach driver Ryan from the Tallangatta Motor Inn made it a very enjoyable experience in what is glorious Victorian and NSW country. Wonderfully historic places and picturesque views made for a memorable exploration and our thanks to Helmut Meuris for having organised such an enjoyable getaway. With Easter in March/April, we will not have time to get this edition of the newsletter distributed by the time of our Annual General Meeting and Annual Convenors meeting, on Monday 9 April 2018. Although we will send out an email to those members on our email list as a reminder. We hope that all WRAG members had a great Easter and that the Easter Bunny paid you all a visit. Life begins again with the new AFL season starting in late March 2018. We hope your team wins this years premiership, no matter who you support. The next key item for your diary is the quarterly Casino Bus Trip on Thursday 19 April 2018, leaving from the Mountain View Hotel car park at 09:00 am sharp. This event efficiently organised by WRAG Convenors Robyne and John, is a great day out. Even if you do not want to gamble, join the coach trip for a visit to explore the City and then join the others at the Kitchen Workshop for lunch, all included in the $15 very reasonable charge. May 2018 is a big month in the WRAG calendar. Saturday 5 May 2018 WRAG has been invited by the Royal Freemasons to participate in a Community Open Day at Monash Gardens Aged Care facility at 355 Wellington Road, Mulgrave, where they are expecting over 500 visitors, including from other Freemasons Aged Care centres in Melbourne. WRAG will be manning one of 16 stalls in the courtyard handing out flyers, as well as inviting visitors to participate in card games inside the Mulgrave Community Centre. Tuesday 8 May 2018 is the first of our two Games Afternoons for this year, which is being held for the first time as a daylight event at 3:30 pm till 7:00 pm (followed by pizza) at the Glen Waverley Community Centre. Thursday 10 May 2018 is the quarterly Golden Club lunch at Mulgrave Country Club, for all those members who are, or have been married for 50+ years. And on Tuesday 29 May 2018 WRAG is subsidising a visit to the Royal Melbourne Zoo. This special event includes a coach trip and entry to the Zoo for just $25. You will either have to bring your own or buy your lunch. See the newsletter for details. Very Best Regards Terry Spicer WRAG GAMES DAYS : SAME PLACE, DIFFERENT TIMES Tuesday 8th May, 2018 and Tuesday 9th October, 2018 3:30pm 7:00pm To encourage more members, new members and prospective members to come along and enjoy playing card games, board games and snooker or table tennis, WRAG Games Day is changing to day time events. Come along and enjoy games for everyone, and an early dinner of Pizza. Suggestions to INCREASE PLAYERS are welcome. Please keep in touch with Committee Members to find out more. WRAG CABIN GETAWAY GROUP North East Blitz at the Tallangatta Motor Inn by Nicole Spicer On Sunday, 25th March, 18 people travelled mostly by train to Albury, where the Tallangatta Motor Inn picked us up in their coach to spend four nights and three days at the Motor Inn, situated on the side of Lake Hume. Travelling through the Alpine regions of north-east Victoria. A trip I have always threatened to do, but never got around to. First, a lovely home cooked meal at the Motor Inn, then off to bed for an early start on Monday. Breakfast, hot or cold was served buffet-style, then onto the bus at 9:00am. Ryan, the bus driver was young, versatile and very knowledgeable about the area and its interesting points. Even some, gossip??!! He pointed out a huge property on the side of a hill and said, thats my house up there, and there s the missus, doing nothing, as usual! MMMH, did we believe him? NO! Turns out his wife, whom he met in USA was at home, and expecting, just NOT in that huge property. All the commentary over the next four days was interesting and in most cases, surprising as he talked about the old days, and the new plans for the area. We thought this area was just snow, skiing, and après ski, but it really is so much more than that. A place to visit all year round, we realised. In Bright for lunch, we had Ham Steaks & Pineapple, with salad and lovely fresh bread. YUM!! cooked by Ryan, the bus driver. See, I told you he was versatile.. Tea and coffee and bikkies every day for morning tea. A chilly day, but warm lunch and lovely company Each day, back to the motel, for a tidy up and dinner. The bar is always open, says Ryan!! And it was!! We gathered there for meet and greet with the rest of the team, Mark & Ellen, and another 14 travellers, mostly from NSW. Mark & Ellen, are a young couple, hard working and full of initiative, who have recently taken over the Tallangatta Motor Inn and the tours. Then into the dining room for another home cooked meal followed by then some, 500 and Uno games before bed. Tuesday, we headed off to Beechworth, visiting the old brewery, now only producing cordials then onto lunch at the famous Beechworth Bakery (with vouchers for lunch and drink); most tried the Bee Sting, or the Vanilla Slice, or both! Then, two hours to spend in the town and surrounds. Trips to the local Op Shop a highlight. Wednesday, we took a completely different direction and ended up at the Power Station- very interesting. Power produced at the Murray 2 Power Station takes only 90 seconds to get onto the grid!! WOW! SCAN Senior Citizens Afternoon Nap We travelled through Corryong, visiting the old Tallangatta, which was moved to allow the Lake Hume to be extended. We even took short cuts through places like Yackandandah (hello to Jim & Norma s property), and towns we could not pronounce (Tangambalanga). The white clawed lobster name the town??, Worse than Wales, I said!! Go on, have a go! Sweet water?-.!! (answers will be rewarded). On Thursday, we reluctantly headed back to Albury for a wonderful Devonshire Tea morning tea, then onto the railyway station to head home. After a long trip home, we collapsed into bed and dreamed the dreams of the innocent. Well, not really but you know what I mean. Friday, i.e.good Friday was a good excuse to loll around and reminisce about our travels. Thank you, Helmut Meuris for arranging this trip, and Mark & Ellen, and especially Ryan, the bus driver (but so much more). Also thank to my travel mates, and all the new faces we spent the time with. 4
