A Message from Our President My Fellow Fagowees, My ten year old nephew recently nominated me for the Ice Bucket Challenge. In case you haven t been on the Internet lately, let me explain what it s about. ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig s disease is a nasty disease for which there is no cure. The only treatment available usually extends a patient s life only a few months. When someone nominates you for the challenge you must donate $100 to an ALS charity or dump a bucket of ice water over your head (or both). The idea is to raise both awareness of the disease and funds to help fight it. I took the challenge at a Fagowees meeting. Thinking about ALS and other life changing diseases gets me thinking about how fragile life is. None of us knows how much time we have on this planet or much much of that time we ll be able to do things we enjoy such as skiing, biking, golfing and all of the other fun activities Fagowees thrive on. All of us have our bucket lists of things we want to do someday. Since joining the Fagowees I ve crossed many things off my list and added many more. When I joined the club I had never been skiing. I crossed that one off pretty quickly. Then I skied some real mountains out west. Last season I raced for the first time. Since joining Fagowees I ve biked across Ohio (3 times), jumped off a building and out of an airplane. I ve also done things that aren t quite so dangerous. It s not that danger that matters, it s doing something you ve always wanted to do. I am hereby nominate everyone in the Fagowees to do the Bucket List Challenge. You have 1 year to cross at least one thing off your bucket list. It doesn t matter how big or how small it is, just do it. If you ve never skied out west, come on a trip with us. If you ve never windsurfed, we can hook you up. If you ve never jumped out of an airplane, plan a Jiffie and help other people cross that off their list. If you ve never been to the Grand Canyon, or Key West, or Put-In-Bay plan a trip. Some things take a lot of planning, for others you have to set aside a day or two and hop in the car. When you complete the challenge you need to do 2 other things. Make a donation in any amount to a charity of your choice and let everyone know what you crossed off you list and what charity benefitted. Tell us at a meeting or post it Facebook for the world to see. Encourage others to do the challenge too. If we can make this as big as the Ice Bucket Challenge I think we can make the world a happier place. Bill September 2014 The Newsletter of the Cleveland FaGowees

Congratulations to the Fagowee of the Month! Our Fagowee of the Month for September is an honorary Fagowee. Conflicts with his job s travel requirements have prevented him from attending any meetings, but he has assumed the role of Chaplain. In this role he has provided spiritual and ethical guidance for our membership through his sterling example. He is a creative entrepreneur who enjoys bringing joy and fulfillment to others by redistributing the wealth and possessions of the ruling class. The next time you are in the Inn at Port Royal, and you see a jolly man with beaded hair holding court in the corner, give a shout out to our newest Fagowee of the Month - Captain Jack Sparrow! PS. If he shakes your hand, count your fingers before you walk away! EXECUTIVE BOARD ELECTIONS - October 21 Help make your ski club better! Fagowees ski club is a volunteer organization. This means it is run by members who are elected or appointed to various positions on the executive board. This is your opportunity to help the club and to have fun while doing it. Nominations will be taken at the meetings prior to the election. If you are interested in a position or know someone who is speak with a board member to find out more information. Most positions are elected in April however Summer Social is done at our October meeting to give the person time to plan. Summer Social The Summer Social is responsible for planning the social functions from May 1 through October 31. The Summer Social is the Club's key contact for our summer trips. The Chair is responsible for: * Appointing trip leaders with the approval of the Trustees * Preparing trip proposals for presentation to the Executive Board for approval * Reviewing trip reports by the leaders prior to submission to the Treasurer * Maintaining a file of all trips for future use * Placing trip information in the Happening * Helping the Merchandise Chair, as needed, or in his absence for sales from November 1 to April 30. 3

MEMBERSHIP CORNER Membership Details Welcome to the club! Remember that membership is only until September 30 th. Every member renews their membership in the month of October, no matter when they join. Membership Assistant: I love my job and don t plan on resigning (unless you vote me out next spring!). But... I DO think that it is important to bring in more members to fill leadership roles. Are you interested in slowly learning about the Membership Chair s position? There is no pressure to be at every meeting or to complete the duties independently. If you like the duties that are required with this position, consider running for it in the future. It will be a much smoother transition when you already are familiar with the tasks. If you are interested in getting your feet wet with this board position, please see me! If you are approved as the official Membership Assistant, you get into all meetings for free!! WHAT an incentive, eh? Name Badges: Do you have your name badge? Have you picked it up from the membership area? If not, please do so. There are WAY too many unclaimed name badges. If you lost it, there is a $5 charge to replace it. New Winter and Spring 2014 members your badges are in! Please come to pick them up at the meetings. Name badges are only ordered THREE (3) times per year: before Christmas, in February, and after the May elections. Summer membership does not have a badge ordered unless the membership gets renewed in the following fall months. 2014-2015 Directory Corrections: New directories have been re-done!
