Club House Update August is popularly known as ghost month in Asia. This is the time of year when spirits are supposedly free to roam the land of the living. For this reason, August is depicted as being generally unlucky for business, and everyone is advised to take extra precautions throughout the month. Almost all business owners I ve met and had conversation with, share the same story that August is usually slow for most businesses here in Bakersfield. Are we also experiencing the Bakersfield ghost month? Business might be slow but we are not slowing down! As summer continues, so do all the activities at the Club. We will continue to have our welcome party tradition for our new members every first Wednesday of the month, our 1 st and 3 rd Sunday Brunch at the Club plus our regular Taco Tuesday and Friday Night Dinners. And to add more excitement to our regular Club events, we are bringing the famous Bakersfield magician Ron Saylor for an evening of magic and dinner on September 14. We are also doing for the first time a night of Board & Brush on September 19 and of course we still have our Bingo & Ice Cream Social. The Club is also preparing for an exciting Thursday & Sunday Night Football and outdoor movie for the whole family on September 28. We hope that you will never get tired of supporting our club events and make Rio Bravo your home away from home. Your Rio Bravo team is very excited with all the positive changes that we are trying to accomplish every single day. Everyone is working hard to bring Rio Bravo to its limelight again. Invite your friends as the golf course is looking great and we have some of the best food in town. Receive sincere customer service that comes from the heart, a real trademark of Rio Bravo! See you all at the Club, Lyndsay Ervine General Manager
Golf Course Update While the summer heat may be taking its toll on you, the Bermuda couldn t be happier. With the proper fertilization and water added to the course, the Bermuda grass is growing like crazy. In some instances, it s growing faster than it can be mowed, which is a good problem to have. Growing a strong and thick Bermuda base will be key to having good playing conditions through the winter months. I will be pushing for growth all the way to the end of the season to get the Bermuda strong enough to carry us through the winter. I will be fertilizing this week and for the next few weeks to get our thin areas well established. Once the soil temperatures drop there will be nothing we can do to grow grass in the winter. So far, I am pleased with how much grass we have been able to grow this season, and look forward to building upon that success next year. As far as the weeds, I plan on having an aggressive pre-emerge program in the spring next year to prevent the crab grass from establishing. This past spring, we were still installing the new irrigation system and I was worried if we didn t water in the pre emerge properly we could have issues with root clubbing of the Bermuda grass. As far as the greens go, they have performed well through the summer heat and other than a bout of fairy ring, which we have treated, they are doing fine. We plan on our fall aerification taking place on September 24-25. We will take the same approach as we did in the spring and should have them heal in the same amount of time. The Golfers Corner The four corners of a great golf nutrition plan These four steps are clinically proven to increase sustained energy levels for a full round. 1. Eat foods with the highest nutritional value while avoiding sugars and processed junk foods. Pair this with a daily high-quality multivitamin or supplement. More than 2,000 clinical research studies show that plan alone extends life, delays disease, balances body weight, improves mental state, and enhances performance. 2. Maintain good blood sugar levels. This can be done by reducing the intake of grains, breads, starches and sugar, which all elevate the blood sugar levels setting up a possibility of a large decline of energy on the back nine. The key to sustaining energy is to keep a healthy blood sugar level. A blood sugar level between 70-100 is normal. After eating under 140 is normal. Some signs of low blood sugar are being tired and fatigued. Signs of high sugar levels are being sweaty, hungry, and dry mouth no matter how much liquid is consumed. 3. Eat high antioxidant foods and supplements. These types of foods facilitate excellent health, vitality, recovery, and longevity. 4. Consume foods and supplements that contain super fats. Essential fats are key to the health of your immune system, heart, skin, endocrine glands, brain function, nervous system and energy levels. An example of a super fat is omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fatty fish, grass fed beef, eggs, chia seeds, almonds, coconuts, macadamia nuts, olives and avocados.
