Wildlife Rescue Centers LA MARINA Description La Marina Wildlife Rescue Center is a privately funded Animal Rescue Center in Costa Rica. Animal victims of repossession, loss of habitat and accidents from all over the country are brought in by local officials. Many animals are nursed back to health at the center and released back into their natural habitat. Programs: Breeding The aim of the Breeding Program is to return to nature the offspring of animals that were removed from their habitat. Tapirs, spider monkeys, green macaws, scarlet macaws, and a few different types of felines are just some of the animals that are bred here. Liberation This program benefits the animals born in the Wildlife Rescue Center that show characteristics necessary for surviving in a natural environment. The selected animals enter a rigorous program where they are taught how to obtain food, guaranteeing their health and well-being. Reintroduction The Reintroduction Program applies to all animals that enter the Wildlife Rescue Center because of repossession, habitat destruction, hunting, or from being injured. These animals are placed in quarantine, rehabilitated, and if they fit the necessary profile, are released into protected wild areas.

Rescue The rescue program at the Wildlife Rescue Center La Marina Foundation has saved the lives of many wild animals that for different reasons have either been a threat to people, or people and their activities have been a threat to them. Conservation This program concentrates on the daily maintenance of animals that have no hope of returning to their natural habitat. Here, they are given a lot of affection and the proper conditions that will hopefully improve their lives. Education The animals in the Conservation Program lend a great service educating visitors with their stories and showing the need for change with some human practices and lifestyles that lead to unhealthy development. Possible tasks for the volunteer: to clean cages, to prepare the food for the animals, to feed the animals, to maintain infrastructure. There are opportunities to perform other activities including construction, paint, art-work or other tasks that you may have the skills for. Required abilities and interests of the volunteer: to have the maturity to work following the rules in a responsible way. The project has internal rules that apply to the project, the community and the host families, to be willing to work with and handle wild animals. It is important for you as a volunteer to keep in mind the risks that come with this kind of work. The animals that they receive are partially tamed, but they remain wild and unpredictable. The project assumes no responsibility on the volunteer s health expenses; this is why you are asked to come with personal health insurance, to work on tasks such as: building cages and fences, digging ditches, raking, and others,

to adapt to outdoor work in a tropical climate with very modest living accommodations and insects, to work with people from other countries and age groups, to have the maturity to work in a foreign country for an extended time period, to have the maturity to adapt to a different culture with different manners, although it is not required, Spanish knowledge will benefit you, to be eager to learn Spanish and to share your life with Costa Rican farmers, to get up early in the morning and work from early in the morning until the afternoon, five days a week, to be able to live in a rural small community with simple conditions, Important: to be vaccinated against Tetanus, Measles, Mumps and other eruptive diseases. JARDIN DE MARIPOSAS SPIROGYRA (Butterfly farm Spirogyra) Location: San José, Costa Rica Del Centro Comercial El Pueblo, 50mts este y 150mts sur. Description: The Jardín de Mariposas Spirogyra is located just 10min out of the center of San José, the capital of Costa Rica, and in the last bit of forest of the metropolitan area: a little tropical paradise in the city center. Our neighborship with the Zoo Simon Bolivar makes our project even more interesting since both of us are located on the shores of the Torres river, where there is still a little bit of forest,

which works as a natural air filter and produces oxygen. It is also a shelter for a big number of little mammals, reptiles, insects, birds, and, of course, butterflies. In fact, the Valle Central is known to be a place where different species of butterflies live together, even though they are usually found in different, specific parts of the country: this is why in our 350m2 farm, visitors can see several of Costa Rica s most beautiful species and observe them in every state of their lives. The goals of the Jardin de Mariposas Spirogyra are: To reproduce, conserve and export 20 different species of butterflies, unique in Costa Rica. To provide our visitors and also educational groups with an ecological and environmental education. Spirogyra also works with different groups of women from rural areas of Costa Rica, located near our primary forests, where the cultivation of different butterflies could present an alternative to more traditional sources of work, which are harmful for the environment. Possible tasks for the volunteer: Depending on the volunteer s preferences, different tasks can be given, for example: Gardening tasks: weed and cut the plants, maintain the compost, clean the benches in the garden, make sure the larves have enough food, maintain the feeding spots for the butterflies, watch out for the safety of the turtles, take care of the waterfall and the orchids, etc Guide s tasks: Hold the information speeches for tourists and visitors about the environment and the importance of butterflies in our ecosystem; maintain the farm and the feeding spots of butterflies, turtles and hummingbirds in a good state, etc Lab tasks: Keep it clean and organized; collect the plants to feed the larves, clean the drawers with water and chlor, keep the materials in their respective spots, etc Schedule for the volunteer: From 9am until 2pm. The butterfly ranch is open from Monday to Sunday, the working days/days off will have to be decided with the project. Requirements: 18 years or older Interest in nature and the environment Bring appropriate clothing (boots, poncho, etc )

Respect the rules of the institution Important notes: During your work at the Jardín de Mariposas, you will stay with a local family. Lunch will be provided by the family and has to be brought to work.
