Southwestern Division 2014-2015 1108 West Palm Ave., Burbank, CA 91506 (818) 848-2653 (mornings after 8:00 a.m.) Please be advised that the following article is comprised solely of my own thoughts, opinions, and experiences, and does not necessarily convey the beliefs and thoughts of the T.T.O.S. Southwestern Division (SWD), and its Members and Officers, or the editor and publisher of The Southwestern Limited. Call me at the above phone number in the mornings after 8:00am if you need to get in touch with me. Call, I love to talk. 2014 CAL-STEWART The 2014 Cal-Stewart Registration brochures were mailed out first-class mail on September 2 nd, and everyone should have received theirs. Bookings for the Radisson and Ayres hotels are up and the Ayres is almost fully booked. The Ayres hotel is the Cal-Stewart alternate hotel because it only has 80 rooms and only 50 of those have been reserved for Cal-Stewart at the discounted rate. We anticipate a great attendance at Cal-Stewart 2014. However, not everyone who says that they are coming has pre-registered or reserved tables. In a few weeks, we will be assigning tables and those who are late will get what is left over. For those who have yet to register and buy tables and have misplaced their brochure, we have posted on our Cal-Stewart website, www.cal-stewart.org, the registration brochure and sellers certificate, which must be included with your registration form if you are buying tables. Prices for everything are the same as last year. Long-time Southwestern Member Rich Lowe has volunteered to replace Bruce and Elaine Lazarus for the second year to handle Cal-Stewart Pre-Registration and table sales, and the Board and I very much appreciate that. He is using new software this year for the Registration effort and THE SOUTHWESTERN LIMITED VOL. 32 NO. 5 September / October 2014 LARRY PEARSON, PRESIDENT CALVIN SMITH, EDITOR HERBERT ALFRED MAYER, PHOTOGRAPHER 2 p1&3-cal-stewart Information p2&6-president s Message p4-train Races & Demolition Derby Categories; Auction Rules p5-2014 C-S Candy Cane Peppermint LifeSavers Tank Car p6-welcome New Members John Fox Marx Show & Tell p7-dream of Dreams C-S 2014 Special Display p8-congratulations Wayne Sheriff Thank you Mike Stella p9-swd Board & Volunteer at Cal-Stewart 2014 p10-swd Meet Schedule p10-engines, Cars, etc. Needed p10-consolation Prizes Needed is doing a great job with it. Rich is working this effort in with his regular job, so please don t overload him at the last minute. Call Co-Chairmen Hollis Cotton at 818.590.0553 for hall table layout questions or Jerry Moser at 760.948.7147 for hotel and Convention Center issues if you have last minute questions. I have been attending Cal-Stewart since 1980 when I joined Southwestern and have discovered, without fail, that the best deals and the best stuff are to be had on Saturday morning from 9:00am to 11:00am. Those who want to save $15 by coming in on Sunday get the leftovers from Saturday. Some sellers are only there on Saturday and some sellers sell out on Saturday and their tables are empty on Sunday. I have discovered that overpriced stuff that doesn t sell on Saturday still is overpriced on Sunday. But the really good stuff and the really good prices are to be had on Saturday. Pre-register and be there at 9:00am on Saturday!!! You can register on-site on Saturday morning, but there are long lines. There are no late fees for on-site registration on Saturday. To speed the process on Saturday, bring your filled-out registration form and exact change. You do not have to belong to a train club to register for Cal- Stewart. An annual fun feature at Cal-Stewart is the Train Races and Demolition Derby hosted by Jon Pincus. On Saturday from 1:00-3:00pm you can test and tweak your entries on the race track. The actual competition starts Sunday at 1:00pm. We would like to provide free locomotives for kids in attendance to use. We are looking for Marx #490 black plastic locomotives for this purpose. This model has no headlight or reverse mechanism and is very fast. We have lots of trophies to give out, and if you enter, you will probably win one of them. If you have Marx #490 locomotives to donate or for advice on how to compete, call Jon at 1.818.889.1005 (h) or 1.818.606.0624 (c). Please mail in your registrations now if you have not already done so!!!!! TOYS AT CAL-STEWART (REPEAT) We are always looking for ways to expand table sales at our annual Cal-Stewart Meet in November. It was pointed out at a recent Board Meeting that some Meets like ours feature toy sellers, and these products are certainly welcome at Cal-Stewart. Nontrain related toys are not discouraged at Cal-Stewart. There is no requirement that you exclusively have trains on your seller s tables. Please pass the word out that sales of non-train related toys are welcome. (continued on page 6)

2014 Cal-Stewart Candy Cane Peppermint LIFESAVERS Tank Car Presented by T.T.O.S. Southwestern Division and Nor-Cal Division of TCA A big Thank You to Mark Kelly, Club Member from Pennsylvania, for discovering a great looking Holiday Seasonal roll of LifeSavers on which to base this year s car. We thought we were finished with the series, but with sharp eyed people like Mark out there...who knows! He found the LifeSavers flavor in a local restaurant and passed it on to us. Also, a big thanks to the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. staff for providing the original artwork for the car. The November Ontario, CA Meet (visit www.cal-stewart.org) is open to all Toy Train, Model Train and Toy Enthusiastes and is the largest club sponsored public train and toy meet west of the Rocky Mountains. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OUR CLUB LAYOUT Hal Rothenborg and David Nissen operate the layouts we put up at the monthly Meets. Hal needs people to operate the Division layout at the December Open-House Meet because he is selling off tables at this Meet and cannot oversee the layout during Sunday. If he can get volunteers for Sunday, Dec. 7, he will set it up on Saturday night and take it down after the meet. If no one volunteers, there will be no Division layout for this well attended Christmas Meet, and David Nissen s smaller layout will be the only layout operating. We also have a large layout that Mike Morgan brings to large commercial train shows like Fullerton Railroad Days, The World s Greatest Hobby on Tour, Great Train Expo, The Big Train Show, plus our own Cal-Stewart Meet. I asked for volunteers in the May/June issue of The Southwestern Limited and no one came forward. So our large Layout will not be at Cal-Stewart 2014 due to a lack of trained workers. The large Club layout is housed in a trailer, and takes considerable work to set up, take down, and operate at shows that typically last at least two days, plus setup the day before. Sometimes the volunteer workers have to stay overnight at the venue if it is too far from their residence. SWD does not have the funds to reimburse the volunteers for their out-of-pocket expenses. All workers for SWD are unpaid volunteers. Recently we had to miss The Big Train Show at the Ontario Convention Center due to a lack of volunteers. We hand out free passes to our Monthly Meets to the public at these shows to promote new membership in our club. If you can help, please call Mike at 805.368.6649 (c), or talk to Hal Rothenborg at our Monthly Meets, or call him at 626.793.9577. AUGUST 9, 2014 ANNUAL SUMMER MEMBER APPRECIATION PARTY Photographic coverage of the 2014 Picnic appeared in the last issue of the Southwestern Limited. T.T.O.S. Southwestern Division thanks Don Kallgren for coordinating with the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum, (LALS) to get their facilities for our annual picnic in Griffith Park. Don is an active Member of LALS and regularly runs his locomotive there. About twelve years ago, SWD President Gary Keck came up with the idea of having a summer membership appreciation picnic in place of the August monthly trading Meet. Our August trading Meet was usually poorly attended due to members going on vacation. The annual SWD picnic at LALS facilities in Griffith Park in August has been a very popular event ever since. This year we had about 320 paid adults (including children aged 12 and over) and 132 children (under 12 years old) in attendance, totaling 452 adults and children, another record for this event. Once again, I want to thank Daniel Hernandez for bringing 37 adults and 27 children as guests from his church. Daniel actively recruits new members for Southwestern. We were short on trains this year due to an unexpected conflict with an annual central California live steam train Meet. We hope to correct this next year. Also, the Los Angeles City Department of Water and Power hired a contractor to bore a tunnel under the west end of the LALS facility and they caused a cave in under the west tracks, resulting that we could not use that very scenic part of the LALS loop. Hopefully that will be 6 repaired for 2015. I also want to thank SWD Members who donated their time to work the picnic: At the East Gate House: Hollis Cotton, Tony Deneve, Larry Pearson; Pre-registration and attendee spreadsheets: Arlene Berns; Food Purchases: Larry Pearson, Roy Bell, Martin Folb; Food Counter Workers: Elaine Lazarus, Arlene Berns, Linda Pincus, Janitta Keck; Cooks: Bruce Lazarus, Jon Pincus, Hollis Cotton; Photography: Herb Mayer, Martin Folb. Please support Southwestern by continuing your Membership, recruiting new Members, buying our souvenir cars, and attending our monthly Meets and Cal-Stewart. As always, hugs to all, and run your trains often. Larry Pearson, President Welcome New Members Welcome aboard Steve Stevens, Reed Le- Tourette, Scott Palmerton, Chris Bedke, Don Baker, Salvador Eugio, Joe Corne, Ted Trisler, John Metros, Jr., Walter Olson, and Ken Lowenthal. We re happy to have you join T.T.O.S. Southwestern Division. We hope you enjoy our monthy meets, newsletter, and can attend the Cal-Stewart Meet, November 21, 22, & 23, 2014 in Ontario.
