Number of respondents Forms started and completed: * Forms started but not submitted: 2 Total forms started: * This survey reports on the respondents who completed the survey only. 1. Introduction 2. About you 2.1 Age Chart 2.1: Age of Respondents 14 12 1 4 2 1 1 Under 1 1 13 11 11 1-24 2-34 3-44 4-4 -4-74 7+ Prefer not to say Age 4 2.2 What is your gender? 43 respondents (%) were male and 2 (31%) were female. In addition, two (3%) respondents answered prefer not to say. 2.3 Do you have a disability that impact on the way you travel? 3 respondents (97%) indicated that they had no disability that impacts how they travel, while two respondents preferred not to say. 3. Your experience of the cycleway 3.1 Do you cycle on the Cycleway? 49 respondents cycle on the Cycleway (7%), while 1 respondents do not (2%). 3

Table 3.1: Sections of survey answered Section in survey form Users of the cycleway (49 respondents) Non-users of the cycleway ( 1 respondents) 1. Introduction n/a n/a 2. About you 3. Your experience of the cycleway 4. Not choosing to use the cycleway. Your journeys. Safety and user-friendliness of the Cycleway 7. The Cycleway and wider public safety. The Cycleway and the local environment 9. Implementation of the Cycleway 1. Any other comments 4. Not choosing to use the cycleway This section was answered by the 1 respondents who indicated that they do not use the cycleway. 4.1 Are your reasons for not using the Cycleway to do with the.3facility itself? Of the 1 respondents who do not use the Cycleway, 11 (9%) indicated that the facility is not the reason for not using the Cycleway. Two respondents do not use the cycleway due to the facility itself, while three people said the cycleway was to an extent the issue. There were seven comments received, summarised below: Other cycleway users: I don't understand why it's a cycle way and not for all unmotorised vehicles? I would use it most days to ride my horse but horse riders are excluded. Very unfair in this day and age. Design: I frequently drive down the newly narrowed Huntingdon Rd. There are now too many cycling related obstacles in the road. You have created a monster, eg buses stop in the road thus holding up all the traffic (they used to have laybys to pull into) ; Other than it stops at Richmond Road, which is where I would join it if going in to town; I live on Halifax Road and usually travel south into the city rather than north up to Girton, therefore at present the new cycleway does not extend far enough for me. I do use the existing, older cycleway but very rarely the new one. Cyclists poor behaviour: A significant proportion of other cyclists are too aggressive and travel at dangerously high speeds. I have been sworn at by other cyclists when doing nothing wrong. 4.2 Is there anything that would have to be changed about the cycleway to make it more usable for you? Nine respondents (%) indicated that nothing could be done to make the cycleway more useable, while seven (44%) said there were changes that could be made. There were eight respondents who provided an explanation. The key points are as follows: Other cycleway users: Make it open to all 4

Number of respondents Traffic signs: I would have designed "all directions green" cycle-only signal phases at all signalised junctions to eliminate conflict between cyclists and motorists, and to improve real and subjective safety. Design: I would also add a cycle & pedestrian priority crossing just west of the Girton Road junction to facilitate safer right turns into Girton Road for cyclists staying on NCR 24. This would be followed by a short northbound raised cycleway on Girton Road to tie into a potential future scheme; Extend the cyclway; Crossing on Oxford road left turn into Huntingdon road is dangerous and the person that devised it should be made to cross it repeatedly at rush hour every day until they figure out why Cyclists poor behaviour: control cyclists speeds; aggressive behaviours; no bicycle lights or HiVis gear. Reverse the development: return the road to its previous state without a cycleway.. Your journeys This section was answered by the 49 respondents who indicated that they use the cycleway..1 How frequently do you use the cycleway? Chart.1: Frequency of use 2 23 2 1 1 11 7 Daily or almost daily About once a week About once a month Less than once a month 47% 22% 1% 14% Frequency of use.2 What is the most frequent journey you make that involves using the cycleway? There were 49 from journeys provided by respondents and 49 to journeys. 1.3 Why do you choose to use the cycleway? Please select all that apply. When asked why they chose to use the cycleway, respondents answered as follows: 1 This information can be provided by emailing ESBusiness.Support@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

Number of respondents Chart.3: Reasons for choosing to use the Cycleway 4 3 3 3 2 2 2 2 1 21 2 19 1 Exercise Speed of journey Reducing my carbon footprint Avoiding traffic Saving money Enjoyment 1 To be able to travel with a less confident cyclist, e.g. a child 9 No viable alternative Other (please specify): 3% 71% 43% 1% 41% 39% 2% 1% 1% Reasons for choosing the Cycleway Under other reasons there were respondents who provided the following explanation for choosing to use the Cycleway. These responses would fall into the above categories e.g. no viable alternative, quicker, cheaper, greener. Much more pleasant than Histon Road at present ( enjoyment ) I need to cycle from my home to St Ives and this is the most convenient route ( no viable alternative ).4 What do you use the Cycleway for? Please select all that apply.

Number of respondents Chart.4: Purpose of journeys made on the Cycleway 4% Commuting to work 12 22 4% Commuting to school/college/university 71% Occasional journeys, e.g. to shop in the city centre, to visit friends and family 2 24% Recreational cycling 1% Other (please specify): 3 Respondents gave five other reasons for using the Cycleway, which are covered b those listed above e.g. Visiting friend ( occasional journeys ) Occasional business travel ( occasional journeys ). Compared with how much you cycled before the Cycleway was available to use, how much do you cycle now? 3 Chart.: Cycling before/after the cyleway 2 2 2 17 1 1 1 Much more A bit more No more or less 3 A bit less Much less 2% 3% 7% % % Cycling after the Cycleway. Safety and User-friendliness of the Cycleway This section was answered by the 49 respondents who indicated that they use the cycleway..1 How safe, in general, do you feel using the Cycleway? Most respondents (92%) felt very safe/relatively safe using the Cycleway. 7

Chart.3: Publicity of cycle links 2 2 2 1 12 1 7 Very well Well Adequately Inadequately Very poorly I don't often make such journeys: can't say 2 % 14% 24% 41% 4% 1% How well cycle links are publicised 9

7. The Cycleway and wider public safety This section was answered by all respondents i.e. users and non-users of the cycleway. 7.1 What impact do you feel that each of these features has on the safety of pedestrians? % % 4% 3% Chart 7.1: Impact of cycleway features on pedestrian safety 7% 4% 39% 37% 32% 34% 29% 2% 2% 1% % 17% 14% 9% % Greatly improves safety 1% 14% 11% % 2% 3% % % Improves safety No effect on safety Compromises safety Severely compromises safety Floating bus stops Raised cycle lanes Parallel cycle and pedestrian crossings Signage 7.2 If you feel that any of the features of the cycleway pose a risk to any other user group, please explain how: There were 21 responses to this question. The key points raised were: Horse-riders: Equestrian safety is compromised by horses and riders not being able to use the scheme Drivers: Drivers have to drive too close to the middle of the road, with an increased risk of colliding with oncoming traffic; There is a risk to all user groups from cars overtaking buses stopped at floating bus stops. Buses: There is a potential for collision between people on bikes and people getting off the bus at a floating bus stop Pedestrians; Tiger crossings present a risk to pedestrians trying to use them at the same time. The Cycleway and the local environment This section was answered by all respondents i.e. users and non-users of the cycleway..1 What impact do you feel that the introduction of the Cycleway has had on the aesthetics and feel of the local environment? Respondents were asked what impact they felt that the introduction of the Cycleway has had on the aesthetics and feel of the local environment and they responded as follows: 1

Chart.1: Impact of cycleway on the local enveironment 1 1% Positive 14 33 14% More positive than negative 22% Neither positive nor negative 2% More negative than positive 12% Negative 9 9. Implementation of the Cycleway This section was answered by all respondents i.e. users and non-users of the cycleway. 9.1 The quality of public consultation in the planning and design of the Cycleway: 7 19 2 11% Very good 43% Good 29% Adequate % Inadequate/poor 9% Very poor 11

9.2 The quality of information provided during implementation of the cycleway: 24 2 % Very good 3% Good 37% Adequate % Inadequate/poor 9% Very poor 9.3 The consideration shown for public safety during construction: 3 2 2 9% Very good 4% Good 3% Adequate % Inadequate/poor % Very poor 9.4 The level of consideration shown for residents' needs during construction: 3 4 29 24 % Very good 37% Good 4% Adequate % Inadequate/poor % Very poor 12

9. The efficiency of the construction process on the cycleway: 11 17% Very good 9% Good 2% Adequate 12% Inadequate/poor 9% Very poor 34 1. Any other comments This section was answered by all respondents i.e. users and non-users of the cycleway. There were 42 comments received. The key points included the following: Reverse the scheme: The scheme is unnecessary Design: It is a shame that it stops where it does; The tiger crossing is a concept not understood by all road users, which makes it dangerous for those trying to use it; A full segregation of cars and bicycles would have been preferable. Compliment: The new cycleway is excellent; It would be good to see this kind of cycleway introduced elsewhere Cost: The cost of the cycleway is not justifiable. 13
