ITINERARY Day 1 March 25 EN ROUTE Depart from your gateway city to arrive in Tunis, Tunisia on Day 2. Bon Voyage! Day 2 March 26 TUNIS After arriving in Tunis, transfer to your hotel, Tunisia Palace, a beautiful French colonial period bank converted to a hotel. Tonight, meet your fellow travelers and learn about your journey at a welcome dinner. (D) Day 3 March 27 CARTHAGE This morning, tour the extensive archaeological digs around Carthage, one of the most famous names from antiquity. Explore the remains of the theater, residential villas, steam baths, and a Punic sacrificial temple. Then, stroll through whitewashed Sidi Bou Said overlooking the Bay of Tunis. The village is undoubtedly Tunisia s most picturesque, with breathtaking vistas framed in bougainvillea, an inspiration to generations of artists. After lunch in the village, head to the immense Bardo Museum, a former palace of the Bey of Tunis, world-renowned for its archaeological and Islamic collections. The Roman mosaics, the best to be seen anywhere, present a study through craftsmanship of the rise and fall of the Empire. (B, L, D) Day 4 March 28 DOUGGA Archaeology again dominates the day as you head west to Dougga. Tunisia s prime Roman site, Dougga is a complete city with temples, theaters, baths, government buildings, residential quarters, and even the gents room. From there, continue to the equally impressive ruins of Bulla Regia. The site is renowned for its unique underground Roman villas with astounding mosaics that have been sheltered from the elements for two millennia. (B, L) Day 5 March 29 OLD TOWN This morning, walk through Tunis medina (old town) and experience its mosques, palaces, handicraft museum, lively bazaars, and an ornate necropolis of former Ottoman rulers. After a lunch of local specialties in a mansion, the remainder of the afternoon is free for personal pursuits and relaxing. (B, L) Day 6 March 30 DJERBA Take an early morning flight to the idyllic Isle of Djerba, a realm of sand and palm trees. Upon landing, proceed to the synagogue of Hara Sghira, one of the oldest, holiest Jewish monuments in North Africa and still the site of a major annual pilgrimage. From there, reach the Isle s capital of Houmt Souk in time to see the superbly designed, informative museum of arts and traditions. The remainder of the day is free to enjoy the Radisson Blu Palace Resort s beachside amenities or wander around the bazaars of Houmt Souk, the best in the country for traditional crafts. (B, L, D) Day 7 March 31 THE GHORFAS Take an excursion to the region of Foum Tataouine to see the unique ghorfa Berber settlements, built for protection like beehives atop outcrops of rock. Each settlement has its own unique charm and history: Chenini village, the South s most picturesque; the restored Ksar Oulad Soltane; and 11th-century Ksar Kedim, the model for all other structures in the area, with its mysterious geometrical bas-reliefs. (B, L, D) Day 8 April 1 MATMATA Today, head to the hilly region of Matmata. The area has dozens of underground dwellings with open-air courtyards dug into the ground and rooms carved out on the sides. They are masterpieces of vernacular architecture, staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter. To the early Greek visitors, these were the troglodytes, or the cave dwellers. The iconic

craters were used in the filming of the original Star Wars. From here, cross the great salt lake Chott el Djerid. An immense flat stretch of white, the lake provides your best opportunity to see a desert mirage. By late afternoon, reach the town of Tozeur and its Ksar Rouge Hotel, with the remainder of the day free to relax. (B,L,D) Day 9 April 2 TOZEUR & MOUNTAIN OASES A morning excursion takes you to three unique mountain oases of the En Negueb Hills: Chebika with its lush spring-fed vegetation, Tamerza overlooking an ancient ruined kasbah, and Mides in a narrow gorge. Visit Tozeur in the afternoon, complete with a horse-drawn buggy ride through Tunisia s largest oasis. Learn about local agriculture including the date palm and other crops. Then, walk through the old city viewing its unique brick architecture. Finish with a visit to the zoo of desert fauna. This evening, be entertained by local Saharan folklore over dinner. (B, L, D) Day 10 April 3 SBEITLA Depart for the ruins of Sbeitla. The Byzantines turned this former Roman town into one of their main strongholds. The visit covers the impressive Forum temples and Byzantine churches. From there we continue North to Kairouan, the former Arab capital of all Northern Africa and still one of Islam s most sacred sites. A late afternoon tour includes the Great Mosque, the oldest religious monument still in use in North Africa, and the Barber s mausoleum with superb Andalusian decor. (B, L, D) Day 11 April 4 EL JEM & SOUSSE Today, visit the well-preserved El Jem Amphitheatre. One of the largest in the Roman world, it stands in splendid testimony to the former wealth of these Roman provinces. Its museum presents a reconstructed Roman villa from the period. Next up is Sousse, with a stop at its archaeological museum, renowned for its extensive collection of Punic and Roman artifacts. Finish with a tour of Sousse s lively medina before returning to Golden Yasmine La Kasbah hotel in Kairouan for the night. (B, L, D) PRICE PER PERSON $4,295 per person based on double occupancy $400 single supplement Day 12 April 5 THE BON CAPE Venture northeast to Nabeul, the country s prime pottery center, and stroll in its market. Next, stop at the Domaine Atlas, one of the country s prime wine producers, for a tour of the facility, a tasting of its prime crûs, and a private lunch. From there, drive up the Bon Cape, a lovely garden-like peninsula which juts out from Tunisia and comes within 125 miles of Sicily. Make a stop at UNESCO World Heritage Site Kerkouanne, Africa s sole ruins of a Phoenician city without another city built on top of it. Continue the picturesque drive via thermal station Korbous with an evening return to Tunis. (B, L) Day 13 April 6 TUNIS Take time to check any last items off your list in Tunis or relax at your hotel, Moevenpick Tunis. You will enjoy the luxurious beachside property with a renowned spa. Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner at a former palace of the old city. (B, D) Day 14 April 7 TO USA Transfer to Tunis this morning for flights home as we bid adieu to this beautiful corner of the world. (B) Meals included as listed above: B=Breakfast; L=Lunch; D=Dinner Please note: Every effort will be made to operate the itinerary as planned, but Cal Discoveries Travel reserves the right to make changes as necessary.
