Volume 14, Edition 13 Friday 29th APRIL 2016 WINTON, QLD 4735 Winton turned out in great numbers for the 2016 Anzac Parade with three hundred and fifty residents and visitors attending the Dawn Ceremony at the Cenotaph in Vindex Street. Visitors from as far away as Katherine in the Northern Territory, Brisbane and Nambour in Queensland lent their support to the dedicated early risers for this most moving of all ceremonies. It has been estimated that approximately four hundred members of the community supported by Service Personnel from the RAFF base in Townsville marched in the parade, led by Parade Marshall Michael Crapp. School children representing both of Winton s schools, and Winton Scouts who have a long association with the ANZAC tradition, proudly wore their uniforms for the day. Winton s sporting community was well represented by the Devils footballers. The parade proceeded from the Cenotaph to Elderslie Street and onwards to the Winton Cemetery RSL section, where all who attended paid their respects to the town s war veterans, who were laid to rest in this well tendered area of the cemetery. In a touching tribute to the fallen soldiers, poppies were handed out to children and others who then distributed the symbolic flowers amongst their ancestors throughout the entire cemetery. The parade marched to the sound of Pipers who had travelled from Longreach to attend the ceremonies and the Winton Community appreciates this sacrifice of time and effort by these dedicated musicians to support our history and celebrations. At the completion of the official program, people dispersed to various venues around the town and to the Winton Club where a lunch was provided by the clubs volunteers. This years ANZAC Dawn Service and Parade was well attended according to organiser Rebecca Crapp. "It was gratifying to see so many people at the service. We estimate about 350 people turned up. The local RSL Branch would like to thank the Council, the wreath layers and everyone who participated in the service, especially the school students who spoke so professionally on the morning."
