SPACE ALIEN SPRING CAMPOREE HANDBOOK CAMP VERDUGO OAKS VERDUGO HILLS COUNCIL MARCH 9-11, 2018 Scouts, Scouters & adventure seekers, Welcome to Space Alien Camporee 2018! This Camporee is designed to emphasize the Patrol method, allow Scouts to put their outdoor skills to use, and test just how well Patrols work together against other Patrols from far, far away! Our competitions will focus on challenging the Patrols knowledge in many Scouting skills, including first aid, knot-tying, lashing, cooking, personal fitness, archery & also working together (and having fun) under pressure. Scouts who arrive prepared for these challenges will have the best experience at Camporee. So spend some time over the next month reviewing your Boy Scout Handbook & practicing your skills. Read this Handbook to know what s expected. We look forward to seeing you at Camp Verdugo Oaks for a fun weekend with our Space Alien theme! Competing Scouts are welcome to dress up as aliens (if that s what your whole Patrol is wearing!) And all older Scouts are welcome to sign up to be part of our Alien Staff! So join us! Camporee Scoring Camporee Scoring, Handicapping & Awards This Camporee will use a point system based on: Check-In, Campsite Inspection and 7 Competition Events. Check-In (scoring notes on pg 8) 100 Campsite Inspection (scoring notes on pg 9) 100 Each Event (100 points x 6 events) (see pg 6) 600 One Surprise Event (100 points) 100 Total Possible Points 900 Patrol Handicapping Our Patrols will be grouped into 2 divisions of competition - determined by the Scouts ranks. Once all the Patrols have checked in, we will split them into two groups, above and below the median handicap score. This "handicapping" method levels the playing field by allowing the more experienced Patrols to compete against eachother, and the less experienced Patrols against other similar patrols. We re calling our two divisions Cosmic Dust and Star Cluster. Handicapping Points Scout 1 Tenderfoot 1 Second Class 2 First Class 5 Star 7 Life 10 Eagle 12 Example: Patrol with 7 Scouts: 1 Star 7 1 First Class 5 1 First Class 5 1 Second Class 2 1 Tenderfoot 1 1 Tenderfoot 1 1 Scout 1 22 22 divided by 7 members = 3.14 handicap Camporee Awards 1 st, 2 nd, & 3 rd place in two divisions for each of the Camporee Events VHC Camporee Ribbons for Top Patrols in both divisions (1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd Place) Baden-Powell Spirit Award (awarded to the Patrol that exhibits the most Scout Spirit at Camporee as judged by the Staff) Awards will not be presented for Check-In or Campsite Inspection Every participant will receive a Camporee patch, distributed at Checkout Page 7

Check-In is by Patrol. Check-In At the Check-In table, each Patrol Leader must have: Maximum Points 1. Camporee Registration Forms (Pages 14 & 15) Forms must be completely filled out with the current names and ranks of the Scouts in each Patrol who are attending Camporee. Additionally, the adults who will be with your Unit must be listed. (All the names should match those who have registered & paid online.) Also, Archery Permission slips are required for each Scout who intends to participate in archery. (Page 13) (Two-deep leadership is required of each Troop.) 25 2. Your Patrol flag 25 3. Your Patrol yell 25 4. Copies of the Annual Health and Medical Records (parts A & B) of all Scouts and leaders attending Camporee to be reviewed at Check-in. (After review, each Troop s forms will be held by the Health Officer and will need to be picked up at check out.) 25 FAILURE TO HAVE YOUR MEDICAL FORMS AT CHECK-IN WILL RESULT IN YOUR PATROL NOT BEING ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE! Total Possible Points: 100 Page 8

Awards Show Troops and Patrols are encouraged to participate in the Awards Show Campfire program. Each Patrol may sign up for one skit or song. Patrols are encouraged to hold practices during their meetings and pre-camporee events and choose the best skit or song to share. The Patrol Leader must sign up their skit/song no later then 5:30pm on Saturday. Please remember Scouting is a safe haven; we want everyone to feel comfortable and safe, so in this mindset, please read the following: Positive Values Fun is an important element of Scouting. But we must remember that everything we do with our Scouts should be positive and meaningful. Activities should build self-esteem, be age-appropriate, and should not offend participants or the audience. As leaders of the Boy Scouts of America, it is our responsibility to model the values of the organization and set a high standard for appropriateness in all Scouting activities. When making decisions, resolve to follow the high road. If in doubt, take it out. These are some of the things that can make activities inappropriate and unacceptable: Name-calling, put downs, or hazing. References to undergarments, nudity, or bodily functions. Cross-gender impersonation that is in any way derogatory, rude, insulting, or lewd. (This is not to say that boys cannot dress for and play female roles when needed in a skit or play as long as good taste prevails.) Derogatory references to or stereotyping of ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Sensitive social issues such as alcohol, drugs, gangs, guns, suicide, etc. Inside jokes that exclude some of those present. Cultural exclusion emphasis on the culture or faith of part of the group while ignoring the rest of the group. Changing the lyrics to patriotic songs ( America, America the Beautiful, God Bless America, The Star Spangled Banner ) or to hymns and other spiritual songs. Page 10

Before you leave your Campsite: Checking Out Your campsite must be clean, in good order, and inspected by a member of the Checkout team.
