UPDATED JANUARY 17, 2014 Martin Putman Marshall & Morgan Counties Alabama Martin is a son of Thomas Putman of North Carolina. Martin was born in 1806 in York County, South Carolina while his folks spent a few years across the border. He married Mahulda or Huldy Parker in 1829 and was in the 1830 census of Rutherford County, North Carolina. In 1835 or 1836 he headed south into Marshall County, Alabama. His son Thomas was born there in 1837. He was first ordained as a minister at the Salem Church in Marshall County in 1837 by the Rev. Bazel Roden. He was pastor of several Baptist Churches and there are a great many references to him in a book, A History of the Primitive Baptists of Alabama by E. B. Watts. He was in Marshall County in 1840, and where he remained until his death May 19, 1882. He was the Pastor at the Mount Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church at the time of his death. Martin was both a Baptist preacher and a blacksmith, and good at both professions. Muhulda died in October 1869 of Puerperal Fever. Martin was shown as a widower in 1870. It then seems he married two more times. He married Jane Basham on October 15, 1871. She died and he married her sister Dorcas Basham on January 15, 1880. By 1850 he had ten children and had one more in 1853. The following is the best I can work out on the children of Martin and Huldy Putman. NANCY PUTMAN born in 1830. She doesn't seem to have married. She was at home in 1850 through 1880. FRANCES PUTMAN born in 1832. She married Samuel Smith in Morgan County on August 12, 1855. Their children were: Samuel M. Smith born in 1856. She married Josiah Keller October 28, 1877. Nancy J. Smith born in 1865. She married John L. Mentzer. Martha 'Mattie' A. Smith born February 1872. She married John A. Keller on February 19, 1893. JAMES WINSTON PUTMAN born in North Carolina on January of 1834. In 1880 he was in Marshall County, Alabama and was married to Elizabeth Guire on June 1, 1853 in Morgan County.
